Sure, you can run Linux on robots and on desktops and, apparently, on small cats, and we’ve also seen it on plenty of tablets before, but this one is a little different. Max Lee over at Galaxy Tab Hacks created the video below to demonstrate a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Ubunbu, but doing it on top of Android such that the tablet’s native OS is running Linux in the background and then using a VM client to launch the UI. In other words: it’s running both operating systems at once, and despite that we think the results are quite usable, even loading up this very website with aplomb. OCZ’s RevoDrive 3 X2 review roundup: SSD melts faces with 1.5GBps read and 1.2GBps write speeds

Did our footage of OCZ’s new RevoDrive 3 X2 whet your appetite for more info on the super speedy SSD? Well, your wish is the web’s command, and we’ve got a full roundup of reviews that’ll tell you all you need to know. After putting OCZ’s latest through its paces, the consensus is that the SSD is seriously quick in remembering and retrieving data. According to Tom’s Hardware, the RevoDrive 3 X2 — with its max 1.5GBps read and 1.2GBps write speeds — “smokes everything” they’ve had pass through their lab. However, AnandTech noted that such capacious bandwidth is “simply overkill” for most users, as the drive only really flexes its muscles once the queue depth increases from enterprise-level workloads. Several sites noted that the lack of TRIM support on Windows machines was also a concern, and that more cost effective (albeit slower) storage solutions can be had with a DIY RAID array of SATA SSDs. CyanogenMod 7 on the Nook Color hands-on (video)

It's hard not to love Barnes & Noble's Nook Color, especially if you’re amongst those who’d rather look at text on a quality backlit screen than an e-paper display. Not only did we enjoy the e-book reader when we first reviewed it, but it keeps getting better thanks to updates to its hidden Android core plus the recent addition of its own app store complete with Pandora and Angry Birds. And while there’s also a decent bundled web browser and music player, it’s not the software that we like the most — it’s the hardware, and particularly the value proposition.

See, $250 ($200 on sale) buys you a gorgeous 7-inch 1024×600 pixel capacitive IPS panel with excellent contrast and viewing angles, an 800MHz TI OMAP 3621 CPU, a PowerVR SGX 530 GPU, 512MB RAM, WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth, 8GB of built-in storage, an accelerometer, and a microSD card slot — all wrapped in an attractive 12mm thin package. Sure, there’s no 3G radio, no camera, no microphone, no ambient light sensor, and no haptic feedback, but despite its lower-end specs, the Nook Color just begs to be turned into a full blown Android tablet.

WiGig hits version 1.1, adds wireless HDMI to its arsenal to celebrate

WiGiG and HDMITo this point, not much has come of this whole WiGig thing, but the coalition is marching forward and expanding the standard’s capabilities with the introduction of version 1.1. The latest specification makes several tweaks to the 60GHz wireless protocol, but the big news is that the Wireless Gigabit Alliance has signed up with HDMI Licensing, LLC — adding the ubiquitous video jack to its arsenal, which already includes cable-free DisplayPort. WiGig display adapters are still expected to hit the market by the end of the year but, for now, our dream of input agnostic wireless HD video streaming is just that — a dream. So don’t start tying up your old newspapers with those HDMI cables just yet.

Visualized: a zettabyte

Remember the good old days when a gigabyte was considered a lot of space? Improvements in hard disk technology have allowed the humble magnetic drive to reach the dizzying heights of multiple terabytes of storage, but Cisco foresees a future that’s a few orders of magnitude more impressive. Pinpointing 2015 as the commencement of what it calls the zettabyte era, the company has put together a handy infographic to show us just how much data can be fit into one: you can alternatively think of it as the equivalent of 250 billion DVDs, 36 million years of HD video, or the volume of the Great Wall of China if you allow an 11oz cup of coffee to represent a gigabyte of data. So “zetta” must be Greek for one hell of a lot, but what Cisco expects is that we’ll be pushing that much information around the web each year by 2015. Any bets on how many exabytes of it will be to stream videos of cats diving into cardboard boxes?

Alcatel-Lucent’s FP3 network processor routes at 400Gbps, handles 70,000 simultaneous HD streams

Looks like the world wide web is seeing a few upgrades this week. Shortly after NC State announced a new methodology for routing fiber optic connections more quickly, in flies Alcatel-Lucent with a shiny new network processor to make things even faster. The FP3 that was announced this week promises a “fourfold increase in performance over the fastest IP network available,” supporting 400Gbps transmission speeds while cutting power consumption by up to 50 percent. The chip’s been demonstrated to the powers that be this week, and it’s reportedly designed to “address tomorrow’s demand for ultra-high performance public and private IP networks.” How so, you ask? A sole FP3 could handle 70,000 simultaneous HD video streams or 8.4 million simultaneous retail cloud sessions, and quite frankly, could make the 100 Gigabit Ethernet standards that were used to look like old hat. But hey — who’s kvetching about that?

Why writers should have their own domains

Great, sage advice from John Scalzi about why a writer might want to pay to register a domain in the era of Facebook:

So, let’s go back to 1998. You’re a new writer and you want to establish a permanent residency online. Which would be wiser: Having your own site at your own domain, or putting up a site at GeoCities?

It’s 2001, same drill: Which is wiser: Having your own domain, or creating a site on AOL servers?

2003: Your own domain, or a Friendster page?

2007: Your own domain, or a MySpace page?

(Hindsight is a useful thing.)

And now it’s 2011 and the choice is one’s own domain or a page on Facebook. Guess which I think you should do.

I agree with everything he says right up to the point where he recommends getting a Facebook page too. Not because it might not be good for your career, but because I think it’s an ugly, stupid service designed to teach you to systematically undervalue your privacy.

Neutrino transformation could help explain mystery of matter



Two research teams have found new evidence of transformations in elusive elementary particles called neutrinos. The findings may finally help explain why the universe didn’t vanish shortly after its birth.

“These results are just the beginning of the story for neutrinos,” said physicist Robert Plunkett of Fermilab in Chicago. “They could lead to clues … and tell us why there’s now far more matter than antimatter.”

Most neutrinos are emitted by the sun, and are so small and ghostly that billions pass through our bodies every second. Most go right through Earth without hitting anything. But some human-built devices—slabs of iron and plastic, big chambers of oil or water lined with photon detectors, or detector arrays plunged into seawater or Antarctic ice—can record the blip of light when a neutrino occasionally slams into an atom.

Using these detection events, physicists have identified three types of neutrino, called muon, tau and electron neutrinos. Further discoveries suggested that each type can transform into another, with muon-to-tau and tau-to-electron neutrino transformations being dominant, at least in particle-accelerator-powered experiments. Researchers proposed a third and weaker change, that of muon-to-electron neutrinos, but until now lacked evidence for its existence.

On June 14, the Japanese Tokai-to-Kamioka experiment reported the significant detection of muon-to-electron neutrino changes. On June 24, the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment at Fermilab reported the same. While the ranges of their data varied, the basic claims were the same.

“[The values] differ because we used different techniques and distances, but they overlap at one part. They’re complementary,” said Plunkett, a co-spokesperson of MINOS.

With a more complete understanding of neutrino transformation in hand, Plunkett said physicists can now design experiments to investigate larger questions about the universe. The largest among them: why there’s far more matter than antimatter.

Matter and antimatter particles annihilate when they meet. Each type is thought to have appeared in equal proportions shortly after the Big Bang, yet the matter-rich universe as we know it still exists. As a result, physicists are seeking evidence of “asymmetries,” in which matter-antimatter encounters end up emitting more matter particles.

Some matter-favoring asymmetry shows up in the annihilation of quarks, though the effect is relatively meager. But physicists say a muon-to-electron neutrino transformation supports the possibility of more significant asymmetries.

“We now have a good enough handle on neutrinos to design experiments and try to address such a big mystery,” Plunkett said.
