AMD earnings continue decline with $1.16 billion in Q4 revenue, $5.42 billion in 2012

We can’t say AMD’s declining momentum was unexpected , but these results don’t necessarily have us excited about the future, nonetheless. For Q4, the company posted revenue of $1.16 billion, which is a 32-percent drop from the same period in 2011 , netting a loss of 63 cents per share. For 2012 as a whole, the company’s revenue rang in at $5.42 billion — a 17-percent fall from the previous year, and a $1.60 loss per share. President Rory Read references evolution and diversification when discussing outlook, but it’s clear that the company needs to make some major adjustments before it can return to profitability. You’ve Got 25 Years Until UNIX Time Overflows

CowboyRobot writes “In 25 years, an odd thing will happen to some of the no doubt very large number of computing devices in our world: an old, well-known and well-understood bug will cause their calculation of time to fail. The problem springs from the use of a 32-bit signed integer to store a time value, as a number of seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on Thursday, 1 January 1970, a practice begun in early UNIX systems with the standard C library data structure time_t. On January 19, 2038, at 03:14:08 UTC that integer will overflow. It’s not difficult to come up with cases where the problem could be real today. Imagine a mortgage amortization program projecting payments out into the future for a 30-year mortgage. Or imagine those phony programs politicians use to project government expenditures, or demographic software, and so on. Quadruple DNA Helix

Sometimes the double helix likes to mix it up! Scientists at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, have found that DNA at the end of chromosomes actually have a very different structure: instead of double-stranded, they have four strands. Balasubramanian’s group has been pursuing a four-stranded version of the molecule that scientists have produced in the test tube now for a number of years. It is called the G-quadruplex. The “G” refers to guanine, one of the four chemical groups, or “bases”, that hold DNA together and which encode our genetic information (the others being adenine, cytosine, and thymine). Swiss Federal Lab Claims New World Record For Solar Cell Efficiency

Zothecula writes “Scientists based at Empa, the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology, have set a new efficiency record for thin-film copper indium gallium (di)selenid (or CIGS) based solar cells on flexible polymer foils, reaching an efficiency of 20.4 percent.
