Google Street View Moves Indoors

Hugh Pickens writes “Google is taking its Street View mapping service indoors with plans moving ahead for 360-degree Business Photos, a program that would send Google photographers to various businesses to snap professional photos for their Places Page. ‘This experience, using Street View technology, includes 360-degree imagery of the business interior and storefront,’ says Google. ‘With this immersive imagery, potential customers can easily imagine themselves at the business and decide if they want to visit in person.’ Photographs are taken by ‘trusted’ photographers, though businesses can also upload their own images via Google Places. It’s starting with businesses ‘that we know are searched for most regularly,’ like restaurants, hotels, retail shops, gyms, salons, and repair shops. Taking internal photos and posting them online brings up some security questions, but Google says its photographs will ‘capture nothing different to what a customer would see by visiting the business in real life.'”

derGoldstein writes “Ars has an article up about the two latest ‘papers demonstrating that, if you change the way the graphene stacks, you obtain a voltage-controlled bandgap … Between these two papers, a fairly complete understanding of the bandgap behavior in three-layer graphene has been obtained, leaving only the challenge of making the stuff.'”

Kinect For PCs Early Next Year, Microsoft Eyeing Business Apps

An anonymous reader writes “Microsoft has announced that its Kinect motion-control system will be available for PCs in early 2012, and that they’re planning to take it into the business world as well. ‘Microsoft plans to launch a commercial program for the peripheral early next year, giving businesses the tools to develop customized applications for their companies and industries. The pilot program already includes such familiar names as Toyota, book publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and design firm Razorfish. All totaled, over 200 “marquis brand” companies in 25 countries have signed up for the program… And while the majority of those companies have opted to keep their names hidden for now for competitive reasons, Microsoft is working with them to get the applications up and running, so they can debut as soon as possible. Just don’t expect the Redmond-based company to do any first party apps for this program.'”

Lean Startups for the Ruby Hacker – Brazil Edition

I gave a talk on lean startups for hackers at the wonderful Ruby Conf Brazil about Lean Startups, explaining the concept, to ruby hackers. The startup world has focused on lean startups, but many developers don’t get the concepts yet.
