Samsung wants to get into the self-driving car business

It’s too soon to crack wise that Apple will design a self-driving car and Samsung will build it , but we’re another step closer to that being a reality. The Korean conglomerate is launching a new division of its business that’ll manufacture car components for other companies, beginning with in-car infotainment gear. According to the release, the eventual aim is to branch out into the components necessary to build autonomous vehicles for other companies. The move follows that of its local rival LG, which formed a vehicle components division in 2013 and is now gearing up to produce components for car companies. According to the Wall Street Journal , Samsung’s move into the automotive components business comes at a time when its smartphone arm is suffering. The company recently moved mobile chief JK Shin out of his office in favor of a younger, hipper replacement in the hope of reviving its flagging profits. Of course, that may turn out to be a fools errand, given that the mobile industry’s boom years seem to be at an end. On the upside, self-driving cars share more than a few components with smartphones, so it makes sense that Samsung’s know-how would transfer across. Expertise in battery technology, GPS, mobile computing, wireless chips, touch screens and similar tech are all found in autonomous vehicles, so it should be fairly simple. In addition, by producing the components for other companies, there’s a smaller element of risk than if it attempted to go it alone straight out of the gate. Those with longer memories will also recall that Samsung used to actually make cars in the ’90s, although the project was ill-fated. The company launched Samsung Motors in 1994, but by the time it had begun to produce vehicles, the 1997 Asian financial crisis forced it into a sale. The division was picked up by Renault, although Samsung maintains a 19.9 percent stake in the firm, as well as control over use of the name Samsung. Copyright case over “Happy Birthday” is done, trial canceled

With less than a week to go before a trial, a class-action lawsuit over the copyright status of “Happy Birthday” has been resolved. Details of the settlement, including what kind of uses will be allowed going forward, are not clear. A short order (PDF) filed yesterday by US Chief District Court Judge George King says that all parties have agreed to a settlement, and it vacates a trial which was scheduled to start on December 15. The key turning point came in September , when King ruled that Warner/Chappell’s copyright transfer was invalid because there was no proof it was ever properly transferred from the Hill sisters, who claimed to have written the song. The trial would have addressed damages issues. Also looming was a late copyright claim by Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI), a children’s’ charity affiliated with the Hill sisters. ACEI came forward in November to say that if Warner/Chappell didn’t own the song, it did. The settlement revealed yesterday resolves all claims by the plaintiffs, Warner/Chappell, and ACEI. Add / Remove After recently seeing the development of literal ‘power plants’ , with circuits that use plants as organic generators, researchers at the University of Technology and Engineering in Peru present another example of organic energy production, which uses soil bacteria to power lamps. The researchers developed an energy capture system that can power a lightbulb for two hours. The ‘plant lamp’ boxes contain electrodes buried within the soil, out of which a plant takes root. As the plant grows, it releases nutrients that bacteria in the soil metabolize, producing free electrons that are captured by the electrodes to power the lamps. In partnership with FCB , an advertising agency, ten prototype models have been produced for families living in the rainforest village of Nuevo Saposoa. Getting a Linux box corralled into a DDoS botnet is easier than many think

As two unrelated blog posts published in the past week demonstrate, running a vulnerable piece of software is often all that’s required. Witness, for example, a critical vulnerability disclosed earlier this year in Elasticsearch , an open source server application for searching large amounts of data. In February, the company that maintains it warned it contained a vulnerability that allowed hackers to execute commands on the server running it. Within a month, a hacking forum catering to Chinese speakers provided all the source code and tutorials needed for people with only moderate technical skills to fully identify and exploit susceptible servers. A post published Tuesday by security firm Recorded Future deconstructs that hacker forum from last March. It showed how to scan search services such as Shodan and ZoomEye to find vulnerable machines. It includes an attack script written in Python that was used to exploit one of them and a separate Perl script used to make the newly compromised machine part of a botnet of other zombie servers. It also included screenshots showing the script being used against the server. The tutorial underscores the growing ease of hacking production servers and the risk of being complacent about patching. Google Finds D-Wave Machine To Be 10^8 Times Faster Than Simulated Annealing

An anonymous reader sends this report form the Google Research blog on the effectiveness of D-Wave’s 2X quantum computer: We found that for problem instances involving nearly 1000 binary variables, quantum annealing significantly outperforms its classical counterpart, simulated annealing. It is more than 10^8 times faster than simulated annealing running on a single core. We also compared the quantum hardware to another algorithm called Quantum Monte Carlo. This is a method designed to emulate the behavior of quantum systems, but it runs on conventional processors. While the scaling with size between these two methods is comparable, they are again separated by a large factor sometimes as high as 10^8. A more detailed paper is available at the arXiv.
