Microsoft has just made its latest Kinect for Windows available for pre-order for only $199.99 with the promise of shipment by July 2014 if you do so while supplies last. The idea behind the early release is to give developers a head start on building applications for the latest v2 technology, though there’s nothing wrong with regular consumers getting in on the action as well. As a reminder, the new Kinect for Windows promises improved depth sensing, a wider field of view, 1080p resolution and more. Big Telecom: Terms Set For Sprint To Buy T-Mobile For $32B

First time accepted submitter Randy Davis (3683081) writes ‘A report from Forbes says that Sprint buying T-mobile for $32 billion is almost done. This will clearly rock the top two telecommunication companies in the U.S., Verizon and AT&T. The news report also said that T-mobile will give up 67% share in exchange of 15% share of the merged company. Officials of both Sprint and T-Mobile are confident that FCC will approve this deal since AT&T’s $48.5 billion acquisition of DirecTV got approved.’ One reason for that confidence: “The predominant feeling is that combined T-Mobile and Sprint will be able to offer greater competition to Verizon and AT&T , ranked first and second respectively in the U.S. market. It will also give Sprint greater might in the upcoming 600 megahertz spectrum auction, especially since part of it excludes both Verizon and AT&T from bidding.” InforWorld puts the potential price even higher, and points out that the deal could still fall apart. Microsoft: Software update unlocks more GPU bandwidth on Xbox One

The system update does not turn the system white… only the employee models do that. The June system update rolling out to Xbox One system worldwide this week includes surface-level features like external hard drive support, as we mentioned this morning . But Microsoft says the new firmware will also help developers extract more power from the system’s Graphical Processing Unit (GPU), even though the base hardware in the system is obviously staying the same. Microsoft didn’t trumpet this news in a press release or blog post, but threw it out there in a tweet from Microsoft’s new executive in charge of Xbox, Phil Spencer: “June #XboxOne software dev kit gives devs access to more GPU bandwidth. More performance, new tools and flexibility to make games better.” As far back as last October, Microsoft was publicly acknowledging how Kinect and system processing took “a conservative 10 percent time-sliced reservation… for the GPGPU processing for Kinect and for the rendering of concurrent system content such as snap mode.” Back then, the company promised it would be opening up that slice of processing time to game developers in the future in a way that didn’t impact the system’s background performance. Star Within a Star: Thorne-Zytkow Object Discovered

astroengine writes: “A weird type of ‘hybrid’ star has been discovered nearly 40 years since it was first theorized — but until now has been curiously difficult to find. In 1975, renowned astrophysicists Kip Thorne, of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in Pasadena, Calif., and Anna Zytkow, of the University of Cambridge, UK, assembled a theory on how a large dying star could swallow its neutron star binary partner, thus becoming a very rare type of stellar hybrid, nicknamed a Thorne-Zytkow object (or TZO). The neutron star — a dense husk of degenerate matter that was once a massive star long since gone supernova — would spiral into the red supergiant’s core, interrupting normal fusion processes. According to the Thorne-Zytkow theory, after the two objects have merged, an excess of the elements rubidium, lithium and molybdenum will be generated by the hybrid. So astronomers have been on the lookout for stars in our galaxy, which is thought to contain only a few dozen of these objects at any one time, with this specific chemical signature in their atmospheres.
