Toshiba Shows 55-Inch Naked-Eye 3D TV With 3,840×2,160 Resolution

55X3

If you thought Sharp’s 4K TV we’ve shown you last week is impressive, think again. Toshiba today unveiled a 55-inch LCD that boasts the same resolution (3,840×2,160 pixels, 4x full HD) but can also display pictures in 3D – no glasses required. The TV will be shown starting tomorrow during the CEATEC Japan 2011 exhibition near Tokyo.

Needless to say, the REGZA 55X3 [JP] is the first TV of its kind. Unfortunately, the resolution stands at “just” 1,280×720 in 3D mode.

The TV features 5,000:1 contrast ratio, LED backlight, a new processor called “REGZA Engine CEVO Duo”, a face-tracking function to enable high-quality 3D pictures for viewers, REGZA LINK, five digital tuners, 10W×2ch+10W speakers, four HDMI ports, and two USB ports.

Toshiba plans to start selling this beast in Japan in December (price: US$11,730).

The iPhone 5/4S: The Complete Rumor Rundown

apple-a5

Apple is less than 24 hours away from announcing the next iPhone. Unlike previous announcements, this show will be intimate and small, held at Apple’s HQ rather than a large venue like the Moscone Center. Most important, Steve Jobs isn’t headlining the show; although, if rumors are to be believed, he might make a cameo. Apple’s latest commander and chief, Tim Cook, is expected to lead the charge at what will likely amount to one of the biggest Internet traffic days of the year.

Apple is rather tardy releasing this latest iPhone, missing its traditional summer launch date by a good two months. However, if the rumor mills are to be believed, there, the new iPhone will be very similar to the old iPhone – except where it isn’t. We compiled all of the rumors here along with stating the viability for each. Some are wide-eyed, others are realistic, while some are pure fanboy fantasy.

The iPhone 4S Will Be A Less Expensive iPhone

Argument

  • Numerous leaked SKU line ups with iPhone prototypes that are made of just plastic rather than glass and aluminum found in Brazil.
  • Apple would completely disrupt Android and Windows Phone 7 by selling a new iPhone at $100 or less.
  • The iPhone 4 still packs enough computing power for most users.

Objections:

  • Unsubstantiated leaks cannot be trusted

Judgment: The stars just seem aligned for this one. The iPhone 4 is still a hot phone despite being over 15 months old. Apple just needs to repackage the current hardware into a less expensive body to completely demolish the competition.

Redesigned, thinner iPhone 5

Argument:

  • Countless thinner cases have leaked over the previous months all purportedly

The countdown to Oneiric Ocelot begins, Ubuntu 11.10 arrives October 13th

This is the countdown

A whole new world? A whole new computer? Those are some pretty epic promises coming from the folks at Canonical, especially since we’ve seen the most recent beta and Ubuntu 11.10 and, while its packed with welcome improvements over Natty, it’s not exactly revolutionary. Still, we’re excited that on October 13th the final release of Oneiric Ocelot will be hitting the web with an improved Dash that integrates search Lenses, new default apps, a spiffed-up app switcher and application syncing across multiple devices. There are plenty of other little tweaks and improvements that add polish to the popular Linux distribution — more than we could possibly cover without inspiring a string of TLDR comments. If you’re the adventurous type you can download the second beta now, but we suggest you wait till the timer at the source link reaches zero. If you want to spread the Gospel of Ubuntu you’ll also find a printable flyer at the source with a QR code and tear-off URL strips that lead to ThisIsTheCountdown.com.

BlueScreenView Shows You the Errors Behind the Blue Screen of Death [Windows Downloads]

Windows: With luck, blue screen of death is something that most Windows users don’t see anymore, but if you do, sometimes it can go by so quickly that you don’t get a chance to review the error displayed so you can look it up later. BlueScreenView is a free utility that will retrieve the error information for you later so you can research what caused it. More

When Giant House-Eating Snails Attack

Photo: Bobbi Zimmerman/AP

Forget zombie invasion! There’s something scarier attacking Miami, Florida,
slowly right now. Reeeeal slow. Behold the invasion of the Giant
African Land Snails:

They can grow to be 10 inches long. They leave a slimy trail of
excrement wherever they go. They harbor the microscopic rat-lung worm,
which can transmit meningitis to humans. And they will literally eat
your house.

“They'll attach to the side of the house and eat the stucco
off the side of the house,” Gaskalla says. The snails are also
attracted to garbage and pet food that's been left out.
