Belkin Router Owners Suffering Massive Outages

An anonymous reader writes: ISPs around the country are being kept busy today answering calls from frustrated customers with Belkin routers. Overnight, a firmware issue left many of the Belkin devices with no access to the customer’s broadband connection. Initial speculation was that a faulty firmware upgrade caused the devices to lose connectivity, but even users with automatic updates disabled are running into trouble. The problem seems to be that the routers “occasionally ping heartbeat.belkin.com to detect network connectivity, ” but are suddenly unable to get a response. Belkin has acknowledged the issue and posted a workaround while they work on a fix. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Man Walks Past Security Screening Staring At iPad Causing Airport Evacuation

First time accepted submitter chentiangemalc writes While Australia is on “high alert” for terror threats a man walked past a Sydney Airport security screening while engrossed in his iPad and delayed flights for an hour. From the article: “This event was captured on CCTV and unnerved officials so much that they evacuated passengers. As the Sydney Morning Herald reported, the man found himself (or, perhaps, didn’t) going into the terminal through an exit passage that clearly was convenient for him, but less convenient for the hordes of passengers who not only had to be removed from Terminal 3, but also re-screened. A spokeswoman for Qantas told the Morning Herald: ‘The man disembarked a flight and left. It appears he wasn’t paying attention, was looking at his iPad, forgot something and walked back past (the security area).'” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Blizzard Has Canceled Titan, Its Next-gen MMO

Ptolemarch writes: Blizzard never officially announced it, but now it’s gone: Titan, the next-generation MMO that had been in development for seven years, has been canceled. Mike Morhaime said, “[W]e set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn’t come together. We didn’t find the fun. We didn’t find the passion. We talked about how we put it through a reevaluation period, and actually, what we reevaluated is whether that’s the game we really wanted to be making. The answer is no.” Polygon adds an article detailing everything publicly known about Titan (which wasn’t much). MMO-Champion’s report mentions rumors of a new project at Blizzard called Prometheus. Home Depot Says Breach Affected 56 Million Cards

wiredmikey writes: Home Depot said on Thursday that a data breach affecting its stores across the United States and Canada is estimated to have exposed 56 million customer payment cards between April and September 2014. While previous reports speculated that Home Depot had been hit by a variant of the BlackPOS malware that was used against Target Corp., the malware used in the attack against Home Depot had not been seen previously in other attacks. “Criminals used unique, custom-built malware to evade detection, ” the company said in a statement. The home improvement retail giant also that it has completed a “major payment security project” that provides enhanced encryption of payment card data at point of sale in its U.S. stores. According to a recent report from Trend Micro (PDF), six new pieces of point-of-sale malware have been identified so far in 2014. Read more of this story at Slashdot.
