Tesla Aims For $30,000 Price, 2017 Launch For Model E

An anonymous reader writes The biggest complaint about Tesla Motors’ electric vehicles is that they’re far too expensive for the average motorist. The Roadster sold for $109, 000, and the Model S for $70, 000. Chris Porritt, the company’s VP of engineering, says their next model will aim for much broader availability. The compact Model E aims to be competitive with the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series, which both start in the low $30, 000 range. To reduce cost, the Model E won’t be built mostly with aluminum, like the Model S, and it will be roughly 20% smaller as well. The construction of the “Gigafactory” for battery production will also go a long way toward reducing the price. Their goal for launch is sometime around late 2016 or early 2017 Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Artificial Pancreas Shows Promise In Diabetes Test

An anonymous reader writes A cure for Type 1 diabetes is still far from sight, but new research suggests an artificial “bionic pancreas” holds promise for making it much more easily manageable. From the article: “Currently about one-third of people with Type 1 diabetes rely on insulin pumps to regulate blood sugar. They eliminate the need for injections and can be programmed to mimic the natural release of insulin by dispensing small doses regularly. But these pumps do not automatically adjust to the patient’s variable insulin needs, and they do not dispense glucagon. The new device, described in a report in The New England Journal of Medicine, dispenses both hormones, and it does so with little intervention from the patient.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

L.A. Building’s Lights Interfere With Cellular Network, FCC Says

alphadogg writes “When a certain Los Angeles office building lights up, it’s a dark day for nearby cellphone users, according to the Federal Communications Commission. Fluorescent lights at Ernst & Young Plaza, a 41-story tower near the heart of downtown, emit frequencies that interfere with the Verizon Wireless 700MHz network, the agency said in a citation issued against the building owner. The FCC’s message comes through loud and clear in the filing: the building owner could be fined up to $16, 000 a day if it keeps using the interfering lights, up to a total of $112, 500. The alleged violation could also lead to ‘criminal sanctions, including imprisonment, ‘ the citation says.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.
