Microsoft built an AI-powered iOS app to help you learn Chinese

Language-learning apps are nothing new, with offerings from MIT and Duolingo ready to teach you a new way to communicate right on your phone. Now Microsoft is looking to teach you Chinese with a free new AI-powered iOS app. The idea here is to provide users with a way to practice the Chinese language in the absence of real-life communicative partners. “You think you know Chinese, but if you meet a Chinese person and you want to speak Chinese, there is no way you can do it if you have not practiced, ” said Microsoft’s Yan Xia in a blog post . “Our application addresses this issue by leveraging our speech and natural language processing technology.” There’s no word on plans to expand to other languages, but it’s not hard to see such an app helping you learn to converse in different tongues, too. The app uses various AI tools like deep neural networks that are able to figure out what you’re trying to say and then evaluate your pronunciation. The AI has been trained on data from native Chinese speakers as well as Microsoft’s text-to-speech technology. As you use the app, you’ll get scored on your speaking ability and highlighted words that you need to work on, plus sample audio to hear how the words are actually pronounced. So far, the app has separate systems for beginners and intermediate learners to better help you move forward from your level of expertise. “The app will work with you as a language learning partner, ” Xia said in the post. “It will chat with you and give you feedback based on what you are saying.” Source: Microsoft

Android Go is streamlined for cheap phones

It’s no secret that Google has been working on improving its apps and operating system for those using less-powerful devices or unreliable connections. It’s optimized its apps to use less data and memory, but now it’s expanding its focus OS-wide. At its developer conference today , Google previewed a version of something the company has been calling Android Go, and it’s supposed to work well even on devices with less than 1GB of onboard memory. Google says Go will ship “as an experience” in 2018, which means manufacturers will potentially start making handsets with the lighter OS after that. According to Google, “Android Go is designed with features relevant for people who have limited data connectivity and speak multiple languages.” It’s basically optimized to run smoothly on entry-level devices that are running at least Android O . This works in part by designing apps like Chrome, Gboard and YouTube Go so that they use “less memory, storage space and mobile data.” Gboard, in particular, will make it easier to type in several different languages via transliteration. You can type the phonetic spelling of words in other languages, and the software will show you characters in the native language. This targets regional markets where low-cost phones thrive, such as India and South America. Android Go will also include a version of the Play Store that will show the entire app catalog, but it will highlight apps that have developers have finetuned for Go. Considering most budget smartphones today boast at least 2GB of RAM, the new software will likely bring Android to even cheaper devices than before. YouTube now has over one billion auto-captioned videos

Over a billion videos on YouTube are accessible to viewers who are hard of hearing or completely deaf, thanks to the video platform’s automated captions . YouTube product manager Liat Kaver has announced the milestone number in a blog post, where he also talked about how hard it was growing up as a kid who’s hard of hearing and having very little access to closed captions. After his team launched automated captions in 2009, they started concentrating on making it more available and improving its accuracy. Kaver said they made automated captions more available to YouTubers by combining Google’s automatic speech recognition technology with the YouTube caption system. They then achieved a 50 percent leap in accuracy — for English captions, at least — by improving the service’s machine learning algorithms and expanding its training data. We all know how funny caption fails can be, but people who have no other way of knowing what was actually said would end up missing bits of information. In the image above, you’ll see an example comparing the service’s old (left) and current (right) models. Going forward, the company aims to improve the accuracy of the 10 other languages its caption tech supports. Kaver is encouraging YouTube creators to chip in and review the accuracy of machine-generated captions for their videos, as well.
