Microsoft Office Web Apps get real-time co-editing, similar to Google Drive

Microsoft promised earlier this year that it would soon be updating its Office Web Apps so that multiple people could edit documents at the same time (yes, just like in Google Drive). Now, five months later, the company’s finally ready to show us the finished product. Starting today, you can work on a Microsoft Word document, PowerPoint presentation or Excel spreadsheet, even if someone else is already in there editing. And if you happen to be offline, you can make your changes in the regular desktop suite and they’ll sync up with the web version once you re-establish an internet connection. As with Google Docs, an unlimited number of people can edit at once — at least in Word and Excel (PowerPoint has a hard limit of 20 simultaneous editors). Also like Google, Microsoft gives you not one, but two indicators as to where someone is inside the document. These include a list in the upper-right corner, with helpful specifics like “Dana Wollman editing slide 12.” Then, once you scroll through the document, you’ll also see pinpoints indicating what people are working on. And in case none of that was intuitive enough, each person will also be marked with a distinct color (yep, also like Google Docs). As you’d expect, all of this will roll out for both SkyDrive and Office 365, though Microsoft warns it could take until the end of week before these co-editing features are available to everybody.%Gallery-slideshow103657% Filed under: Software , Microsoft Comments

Microsoft shows how to redeem an Xbox One download code in six seconds (video)

How quickly can you redeem an Xbox One download code ? Quickly enough to fit the experience into a six-second Vine video , apparently. Microsoft’s Major Nelson has just posted one of the looping clips (after the break) to prove that you can scan codes with the console’s Kinect sensor in mere moments. It’s doubtful that anyone will need to grab content quite that quickly, but the demo is a friendly reminder of the time we’ll save by ditching old-fashioned keyboard input after November 22nd . Blockbuster to shutter remaining US retail stores, accept the inevitable

It wasn’t hard to see the writing on the wall for Blockbuster’s rapidly declining disc-based movie services, and it’s now clear that the end is at hand. The Dish-owned company says it will close its remaining 300 directly controlled American stores (down from 9, 000 in its heyday) by early January, along with their matching distribution centers. Blockbuster By Mail rentals will also disappear by mid-December. While franchised stores will survive, Blockbuster is effectively becoming an internet-only brand in the US; you’ll likely have to use Blockbuster @Home or Blockbuster On Demand to see that blue-and-yellow logo. We’re not lamenting the death of the retail business when online services are much more convenient, but we won’t blame you if you feel slightly nostalgic — it’s the end of an era. Zero Motorcycles unveils 2014 e-bike lineup, including the high-powered Zero SR (video)

Fall is well underway, which means it’s time for Zero Motorcycles to give its e-motorbike range a tune-up. The highlight for many will be the Zero SR : the red-hued, $16, 995 flagship produces both 24 percent more power and 56 percent more torque than the Zero S, which takes it to 60MPH in a brisk 3.3 seconds. There’s a little something for everyone, however. All 2014 bikes can use a $2, 495 Z-Force Power Tank that extends the range up to 171 miles in city travel, and the company has refined the brakes, handling and suspension on the Zero S, Zero DS and Zero FX. Eco-friendly riders can request price quotes for the new bikes today, or at least whet their appetites through a promo video after the break. Doxie Flip is a battery-powered, flatbed-style portable scanner that costs $149

When it comes to portable scanners , Doxie already has a little something for most everyone . But there’s nothing wrong with adding yet another one to its lineup, right? Today, the company is announcing the Doxie Flip, a wireless scanning device that bears a flatbed appearance and remains as easily transportable as the other members of the family. Unlike Doxie’s Go and One , however, the Flip isn’t designed to capture documents — instead, the idea is to be able to scan artifacts of many different shapes and sizes, such as notebooks, photo albums, coins and other stuff your creative mind might think of. On the software side, Doxie is making folks who are invested in its ecosystem feel right at home, since the newly released Flip relies on the same software as previous models. The Doxie Flip is now available for $149, and you can get a better glimpse of it by checking out the gallery below.%Gallery-slideshow103457% Filed under: Misc , Peripherals Comments Source: Doxie

Samsung CEO promises to deliver devices with ‘folding displays’ in 2015

At Samsung’s Analyst Day, alongside talking serious financial numbers, forward looking statements and such, the company has announced that it will bring fully-foldable screens to willing customers some time in 2015. The screen tech (which we’ve seen an incremental nudge towards with the Galaxy Round) could find its way into both typical smart devices like tablets and smartphones as well as wearables, which is something that Samsung has shown more than a passing interest in. In fact, Samsung Electronics CEO Kwon Oh Hyun, in the same statement, reiterated that there was still plenty of “room for improvement” on the Galaxy Gear. The company already posited some extra-malleable screens in its big CES press show back in January, where we snapped the above still from the concept-laden (Google Glass-baiting) video promo. We’ve embedded it in full, right after the break. Filed under: Cellphones , Displays , Tablets , HD , Mobile Comments Source: Business Wire (Korean)

Los Angeles moves forward with proposal for free citywide WiFi

Los Angeles has been knocking about the idea of free citywide WiFi for several months, but now those thoughts have coalesced into something more concrete. Today, the Los Angeles City Council has unanimously decided to draft a RFP (or request for proposals) for businesses interested in developing that network. Building such a project “would require fiber to be run to every residence, every business, and every government entity within the city limits of Los Angeles, ” LA’s Information Technology Agency GM Steve Reneker told Ars Technica . It’s expected that the fiber will also supply residents with free internet access at speeds between 2Mbps – 5Mbps, with paid plans scaling up to a gigabit. The entire scheme is expected to cost $3 billion to $5 billion, but that’s cash the outfit that builds the network will be responsible for. However, don’t start packing your bags for the City of Angels just yet, as choosing and a company to build-out the whole shebang and associated negotiations could take up to a year. BitTorrent Sync launches API for building decentralized apps, comes to iPad

BitTorrent Sync , the cross-platform tool for sharing files without cloud interference, hasn’t managed to shake its beta tag yet, but that isn’t slowing anything down. In addition to announcing the service now has more than a million active users monthly, and it’s passed over 30 petabytes of data between devices, today sees an update for users and something for developers, too. The general release of version 1.2 is said to improve transfer speeds to up to around 90MB per second. A new native iPad app is out today, and the current iOS version has seen design tweaks and compatibility improvements for iOS 7. Sending and syncing data in other apps using BitTorrent Sync is now possible, and pics and video from your synced folders can be added to a device’s camera roll. BitTorrent Sync is also discharging its API to any and all developers today. Just like the service itself, the API doesn’t favor any platform, and will allow devs to tinker on all the main computer operating systems , as well as Android and iOS. While it means file-sharing support can be easily shoehorned into other things, the Sync team also imagines entirely new services build off the back of the underlying platform, making use of encrypted data transmission that doesn’t rely on any centralized server. BlackBerry abandons $4.7 billion rescue deal and replaces CEO Thorsten Heins

If you were looking for positive news about BlackBerry’s future, we’d suggest you look away. Canada’s favorite smartphone maker has announced that its $4.7 billion rescue deal with Fairfax has collapsed. Instead, the company has switched to Plan B — raising $1 billion in cash with a debt issue and waving goodbye to current CEO Thorsten Heins . The board is currently looking for a replacement, but in the meantime, John S Chen, former CEO of Sybase, which is now a part of SAP, will take the reins as interim CEO. The only thing we’ve yet to learn is what this means for BlackBerry’s Global Creative Director , but she’s probably preoccupied in the recording studio.
