ASUS Zenbook UX301 will have 2,560 x 1,440 touchscreen beneath Gorilla Glass 3 case (video)

The ASUS Zenbook Infinity first showed off its icy Gorilla Glass-clad curves at Computex back in June, and now it’s resurfaced in a video that’s making the rounds ahead of ASUS’ press conference here at IFA. Incidentally, the video hints at a new name — the Zenbook UX301 — and also clarifies most of the main specs. According to the video, the UX301 will have a Retina-esque 13.3-inch, 2, 560 x 1, 440 multitouch display, a Haswell Core i7 CPU, 802.11ac WiFi and ASUS SonicMaster audio tech. The flagship Ultrabook will no doubt draw fans of thin design as well, thanks to the 15.5mm (0.64-inch) profile. We’ll likely have a chance to play with it ourselves soon at ASUS’s upcoming event, so stay tuned. In the meantime, there’s a video after the break. Xbox One swings into full production for November release, gets a CPU boost

No amount of news about the Xbox One can compete with holding the console in your hands — thankfully, production is now in full swing for the planned November release. This was announced by Xbox Chief Marketing Officer Yusef Mehdi at the Citi Global Technology Conference, where he also revealed that the final product will have a slightly faster CPU than expected. Instead of the 1.6GHz processor we thought the console would have, it will be equipped with a 1.75GHz CPU. We can add that to the list of things we’ve found out about the console these past two months, including its GPU clock speed boost , lack of external storage support at launch and ability to recognize up to eight controllers at once. While Sony already has a specific target date for the PS4 launch , Microsoft has yet to conjure up one for its newest console, although that could change at the Tokyo Game Show . Apple confirms September 10th iPhone event, and we’ll be there live!

The next iPhone will be officially unveiled on September 10th, as confirmed via the Apple-delivered invite that you see above. When the curtains pull back, it’ll be nearly a year to the day since the iPhone 5 was ushered into reality , and it’ll no doubt be a monumentally important day for the company. Particularly compared to the barrage of products Apple introduced in 2012 — iPad mini , iPhone 5 , the MacBook Pro with Retina display , enhanced MacBook Air / iMac / Mac mini lines, a redesigned iPod nano , a revised iPad / iPod touch / Apple TV , ad OS X Mountain Lion — 2013 has been eerily quiet. Outside of a tweaked iPhone 5 for T-Mobile’s network, a Haswell-infused MacBook Air and a tease of the next-generation Mac Pro , we’ve been left with little more than hopes for newly-inspired versions of iOS and OS X. That changes on the 10th of September, as at the very least, a next-gen iPhone will hit the stage. We’ll also holding out hope for a lower-end iPhone for emerging markets — markets where Android and even Windows Phone are the platforms of choice for communities making the move into the smartphone era. We wouldn’t put it past Apple to also revise its iPad line while it’s at it, and naturally, iOS 7 should be just about primed for release to the masses. As you’d expect, we’ll be on hand in Cupertino in order to liveblog every second of the action, and we’d invite you to cast your best guesses on what’s to come in comments below. Google teases Android 4.4 as ‘KitKat,’ passes one billion Android activations

Google’s SVP Sundar Pichai has just confirmed — by way of the above photo — that the next version of Android is named KitKat (rather than the rumored ” Key Lime Pie “) aka version 4.4. The exec shared this geeky nugget on both Google+ and Twitter, while his company has updated the Android developer site with a page chronicling Android’s milestones so far. While details are light at the moment, Google teases its upcoming release with the following line: “It’s our goal with Android KitKat to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.” And just to recap, here are all the previous dessert-based names: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean. Yep, it’s “K” after “J” now. Pichai also announced that there are now over one billion Android device activations, surpassing the 900 million mark back in May this year. Amazon launches Kindle Matchbook: discounted ebooks for those who own the hard copy

When Amazon launched AutoRip , we looked at our bookshelves and wished that us readers would get something similar. Fortunately, the company had the same idea, and is now announcing Kindle Matchbook. In short, if you’ve bought one of 10, 000 selected titles from Amazon, you’ll be entitled to snag a digital copy for between $2.99 and nothing. The service launches in October and there’s no limit on when the purchases were made — meaning that you could be offered an awkward reminder of the literature you were gorging back in 1995. Sky becomes first UK TV network to broadcast live 4K video

Remember how we’d heard that a British broadcaster is trialing 4K TV ? We have a hunch as to which company that is: Sky now claims that it’s the first UK TV network to have conducted a live 4K broadcast. The firm captured a weekend Premier League match in ultra high resolution using the same infrastructure it normally requires for a live show, with satellites delivering a feed to the company’s Isleworth broadcast center. Commercial service remains distant, mind you — Sky requires both more research and wider adoption of 4K TVs to justify an upgrade. If everything falls into place, though, Sky could have an advantage over rival providers that have yet to venture beyond HD. Filed under: Home Entertainment , HD Comments Source: Sky

Japan’s Lo maglev train aces first test, zooms past countryside at 311 mph (video)

This maglev train’s length of development sure can’t a hold a candle to its speed — it took its creators almost six years to finally give it a test run. The five Lo Series cars zipped along the 26.6-mile track in nine minutes, hitting 311 mph within the first three miles. The reporters on board the futuristic vehicle couldn’t feel or hear any disturbance, except for the odd blown mind. Outside, however, watching members of the public felt a shockwave followed by a deafening roar as the duck-billed train zoomed past. Using results from this trial, the company will be assessing the platypus-like train’s potential environmental impact and looking for ways to reduce its maintenance costs in the future. You won’t be taking a ride on this levitating wonder during your next Japanese vacation, though — — CJCR’s got a few more tests to run before its 2027 launch date. Kyocera piezoelectric film speaker delivers 180-degree sound to thin TVs and tablets (update: live photos)

The thinner our devices become, the less room there is for speakers and other thicker components. Kyocera has a solution, however: it just modified its Smart Sonic Receiver conduction technology for use with conventional, over-the-air audio. The company’s new Smart Sonic Sound device still relies on a piezoelectric actuator, but vibrates against a film to generate as much volume as a regular speaker in a far thinner (under 1.5mm thick) design. The new speaker might even sound better than its traditional counterparts. It delivers full volume and quality in a 180-degree listening arc, and it’s responsive enough to recreate very subtle noises. Smart Sonic Sound is already shipping in LG’s 55-inch curved OLED TV , and Kyocera expects it to reach laptops, tablets and other devices where interior space is valuable. Update: Our colleagues at Engadget Japanese have posted their first-hand look at Kyocera’s speaker technology, complete with a gallery of live photos; we’ve posted two of them here.
