ASUS launches dual-band router with combined 1900Mbit/s speeds

Some of ASUS’s big Computex 2013 launches today involved the latest 802.11ac WiFi flavor, and since you’ll need to feed them with a router packing the same tech, ASUS has also announced one of those: the RT-AC68U. The company claims it’s the first dual-band 802.11ac router with AC1900 data rates up to 1900 Mbit/s, thanks to AiRadar beamforming, which helps bring a stronger connection and 150 percent better range, too (if accurate). You’ll also be able to share files between ASUS routers with USB-attached drives thanks to a router-to-router sync mode, negating the need for a switched-on PC or other device. There’s no word on pricing or availability, but the previous RT-AC66U flagship ran about $200 or so — so we’d be surprised if it came in under that figure. Boeing tapped to build ViaSat-2 satellite, launch set for mid-2016

ViaSat-1 recently earned a Guinness World Record as the highest-capacity satellite in (or out of) the world, but it may need to hand off that title come 2016. ViaSat-2, the company’s next-gen bird, will double the capacity of its predecessor while also extending coverage to a larger portion of North America, Central America and the Caribbean, along with the aviation and shipping routes between the East Coast and Europe. Boeing will manufacture the new equipment, which will be based on the 702HP satellite platform. Once in orbit, ViaSat-2 will serve residential customers , air travelers and government agencies alike, with a massive seven-fold increase in coverage. River Thames to bathe in upgraded long-distance WiFi

Not that a view over the Thames ever gets old, but commuters should soon find it a bit easier to check their inboxes while they’re on or next to the water. Californian WiFi specialist Ruckus says that its wireless steering technology — which increases network range by up to 4x by directing signals around obstacles and interference — has just been picked for an upgrade to BT’s Thames WiFi service. The new “carrier-grade” equipment should be activated within the next couple of months and will stretch out along the full 27 meandering miles of river that are already covered by traditional antennas . With better hotspot access spreading across the Tube network , black cabs and now the water, EE ‘s central London LTE service will have even more to prove in terms of raw speed .
