Warner Bros Claims Agency Ran Its Own Pirate Movie Site

Warner Bros Entertainment has sued talent agency Innovative Artists, claiming that the agency ran its own pirate site when it ripped DVD screeners and streamed them to associates via Google servers. TorrentFreak adds: In a lawsuit filed in a California federal court, Warner accuses the agency of effectively setting up its own pirate site, stocked with rips of DVD screeners that should have been kept secure. “Beginning in late 2015, Innovative Artists set up and operated an illegal digital distribution platform that copied movies and then distributed copies and streamed public performances of those movies to numerous people inside and outside of the agency, ” the complaint reads. “Innovative Artists stocked its platform with copies of Plaintiff’s works, including copies that Innovative Artists made by ripping awards consideration ‘screener’ DVDs that Plaintiff sent to the agency to deliver to one of its clients.” Given its position in the industry, Innovative Artists should have known better than to upload content, Warner’s lawyers write. 3D printed ‘heart on a chip’ is an alternative to animal testing

3D printing’s potential to create custom objects, parts and tools has enormous potential for the medical field, where bespoke organs could be created on demand, saving lives that wouldn’t survive waiting for donors. This year has already had standout applications: back in February, scientists successfully implanted printed tissue and organs into animals while another group created a new jaw for a cancer survivor. But Harvard researchers got closer to human-ready organs when they built the first entirely 3D-printed organ-on-a-chip with integrated sensors that scientists can use to test the efficacy of their synthetic tissues, instead of inserting them in animals. The organs-on-chips, known in the scientific community as microphysiological systems (MPS), are synthetic replacements for human internals — not just hearts and livers but also bone, cartilage, microvasculature, and other tissues. But the Harvard researchers crucially integrated sensors into their MPS’s, which provide non-invasive, electronic readouts on structures within the body. The Harvard researchers developed six different “inks” into a cardiac microphysiological device — aka, a heart on a chip. The integrated sensors allowed them to bypass the typically work-intensive process of collecting data, which otherwise requires microscopy or high-speed photography. To prove the efficacy of the 3D-printed organ, they applied the MPS to study drug responses and the development of stem cell-derived cardiac tissue, as the Harvard team reported in their paper published in Nature . WiGig will bring superfast WiFi to devices next year

The WiFi Alliance has finally certified ” WiGig , ” a high-speed, 60 GHz standard otherwise known as 802.11ad. Using beamforming, it can yield speeds of up to 8 Gbps, or nearly 1GB per second from a distance of up to 10 meters. As many as 180 million devices using the standard, like routers, laptops and smartphones will arrive by the end of next year, the group said. It also unveiled the first five certified WiGig products from Intel, Dell and Qualcomm, among others. The WiFi Alliance notes that the new standard operates in the “less congested” 60 GHz spectrum, which should aid speeds. It says that manufacturers can implement “handoff” technology so that your phone and router will automatically switch to 2.4 or 5 GHz WiFi if you leave the room, for instance. Samsung, among others, has already released uncertified WiGig devices. 8 Gbps is around three times faster than the best 802.11ac routers can do right now. However, in the real world, most current devices can only hit 600 Mbps or so, less than a fifth of the theoretical maximum in some cases. In theory, 802.11ad should be faster, thanks to the beamforming and distance limitation, but you’ve essentially got to be in the same room as the router to benefit from such speeds. Of course, your smartphone or laptop would have to support the standard too, not just the router. Qualcomm’s WiGig video from CES 2016 Nevertheless, if the new standard can do even 20 percent of the promised speeds, it’ll be useful in a lot of cases. If you usually work from the same room and transfer files around your network, for instance, you’ll no longer need a wired gigabit connection. And folks with Google Fiber or other high-speed internet services should get faster wireless speeds — my router and smartphone combination limits me to 200 Mbps, for instance, while my laptop gets 1 Gbps via wired ethernet. The first mobile device to carry the standard is the Dell Latitude E7450/70, and both Intel and Qualcomm have certified router solutions. Expect a flood of devices to carry the standard soon, including smartphones, tablets, and notebooks. By next year, many will probably factor the standard into their “buy” decisions. Google adds a food delivery shortcut to Maps for iOS

Not content with a simple navigation app, Google has updated Maps for iOS with a handy food delivery shortcut. So when you tap on a nearby restaurant, perhaps to see its opening times, you’ll soon see a button titled “Place an Order.” Tapping this will give you a few different options (these will vary depending on your country and the business in question) such as Grubhub, Seamless and Eat 24 in the US. Select your preferred service and you’ll be thrown across to the relevant iPhone app. It’s a small addition, sure, but one that could make ordering dinner just a little faster at night. Netflix Pledges to Eat $3 Billion in Debt for Original Programming

Netflix announced in a press release on Monday that the company would be taking on another $800 million in debt in order to create more original content. Netflix is already in $2.37 billion of debt to further Netflix’s vision of being 50 percent original content. Chief content officer Ted Sarandos announced in January that the company planned to invest $6 billion total in creating its own movies and TV shows. So it’s half way there. Read more…
