Windows 10 Creators Update now available to all, November Update end-of-life’d

(credit: Ars Technica) Some four months after its initial release, Microsoft says it has opened the floodgates and is now pushing out Windows 10 version 1703, the Creators Update, to every compatible PC (a category that excludes systems using Intel’s Clover Trail Atoms ). Earlier this month, AdDuplex, which tracks the penetration of the different Windows 10 versions, reported that as of July 18, the Creators Update had just passed 50 percent of Windows 10 systems. Forty-six percent are on the previous version, 1607 (aka the Anniversary Update). Until now, the deployment of the Creators Update has been throttled to stage its rollout. That throttle is now removed, so most of that 46 percent should now start upgrading. Microsoft is also saying that with this full rollout, enterprise customers should have confidence deploying the update. With Microsoft getting rid of the “Current Branch” and “Current Branch for Business” nomenclature , this is the closest thing to a signal that the version is enterprise-ready. ‘Duke Nukem 3D’ re-release adds new levels from the original team

If Duke Nukem Forever convinced you that cheesy one-liners, bad puns and juvenile action-hero humor is best left in the 90s , you’re in luck. Gearbox Software just announced that it’s bringing back the original Duke Nukem 3D in a special 20th Anniversary Edition World Tour that packs in 8 new levels, a ton of freshly recorded voice lines and a modest graphics update. Even better, all this new content was designed by much of the 1996 classic’s original team. In addition to the original game, Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour (what a mouthful) features a new episode created by Allen Blum and Richard “Levelord” Gray (two level designers from the original game), new music from original composer Lee Jackson and a ton of fresh “duke talk” from voice actor Jon St. John . Not good enough? Okay there’s a little more. The game’s 20th anniversary release will also feature a 2.5D option that gives the graphics a modest update. The game’s 2D sprite look isn’t going anywhere, but the actual level environment will use real 3D rendered graphics instead of the pseudo-3D effect the original game used. Even that is only an option, though. Gearbox promises the original 1996 graphics experience will be available to purists. The whole experience will set Duke fans back $20 when it launches on October 11th. That a pretty steep price increase from when the game could be had on Steam for about $4 — but at least there’s a ton of new content. Microsoft has two big Windows 10 updates slated for 2017

While announcing the gradual rollout of its Anniversary update for Windows 10, Microsoft confirmed that there would be two feature updates coming in 2017. This means moving to a twice-a-year schedule the company had previously set up for its ” Threshold ” updates for Windows 8, which used the codename for that operating system. According to Windows Central , the first update for 10, called “Redstone 2” after this operating system’s nickname, will come in early 2017, followed by “Redstone 3” four to six months later in late summer or early fall. The latest internal builds are around the 14900 range, the site said, meaning testers should soon receive bits of Redstone 2 to try out and give feedback. Source: Windows Central

Windows 10’s Anniversary Update arrives

After a few months of hype , the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is here… well, mostly. Microsoft has started rolling out the upgrade to desktop users, who’ll automatically receive it stages with “newer machines” getting it first. You can update manually if you just can’t stand sitting behind the curve. However long you wait, your PC will get more pervasive Cortana voice commands (such as controlling some apps), deeper pen input (including a dedicated pen interface) and a spruced-up Edge browser with extensions . If you’re hoping to update your Windows 10 phone … well, you’ll have to be patient. The Redmond crew will only say that the Anniversary Update hits smartphones in the “coming weeks.” Not that there’s as much of a rush in the first place. While the Windows 10 Mobile release gets some desktop features (such as cross-platform Cortana syncing) as well as interface tweaks (like more active Live Tiles and swipe-based browser navigation), it’s not the star of the show this time around. Windows 10’s Anniversary Update arrives this summer

Just because Microsoft is less focused on monolithic Windows releases doesn’t mean it’s forgetting to deliver big upgrades. The company has used Build 2016 to announce an Anniversary Update for Windows 10 that brings some hefty improvements. For one, it brings Windows Hello’s biometric authentication to all kinds of apps, including the Edge browser — you can sign into a website with your fingerprint. Pen support also gets its due with a sticky note app, a sketchpad and virtual drawing tools like a ruler and a stencil. The upgrade brings more advanced gestures and pen input, too, such as erasing words by striking them out. The Anniversary Update arrives this summer, so it shouldn’t be too long before you can give its features a try.
