AMD’s R9 Nano crams a full Fury X into a tiny 6-inch form factor

12 more images in gallery Earlier this year, AMD unveiled three new graphics cards: the R9 Fury X, R9 Fury, and R9 Nano. While the top-of-the-line water-cooled R9 Fury X and air-cooled R9 Fury have both since been released to positive reviews, the mini-ITX sized R9 Nano has remained something of a mystery. Fortunately, the Nano appears to have been worth the wait. While the Nano costs the same as a Fury X—$649, or about £530 (UK pricing is unconfirmed)—the diminutive card also sports same full-fat Fiji chip, which is crammed into its teeny 6-inch form factor. With the R9 Nano you get a full 4096 stream processors, 256 texture units, 64 ROPs, and 4GB of 4096-bit memory high-bandwidth memory operating at 1000MHz. AMD claims performance is around 8.2 TFLOPS, which is only five percent below that of the Fury X. Even better, the Nano needs just a single 8-pin PCIe power connector, with a typical power consumption of 175W, which is miles below the 275W of the Fury X. Of course, such dramatic power savings have to come from somewhere, and for the Nano that means a reduction in clock speed. The Nano’s GPU is rated for “up to 1000MHz,” with AMD saying that under typical usage in most games it runs between 850MHz and 900MHz. That’s around a 14 percent decrease over the 1050MHz of the Fury X, but it’s still impressive given the Nano’s size. Office 2016 for Windows coming on September 22

A leaked image from a Microsoft intranet site has disclosed that Office 2016 for Windows will be released on September 22. Office 2016 for Mac is already available to Office 365 subscribers . When that was launched in July, Microsoft said that regular retail copies would be released in September. While we’re not certain, it seems likely that September 22 will be the release date for that, too. Office 2016 is an incremental update . It makes styling between Windows, OS X, and the mobile apps a little more consistent—by default each app gets a boldly colored title bar that reflects the icon color, just like the mobile apps—and includes improved collaborative editing, rights management, and data analysis capabilities. Sham telecoms created to scam AT&T must pay back ill-gotten gains

AT&T has won a $252,000 judgment from the remnants of sham telecoms that were created in order to bill legitimate phone companies for services they didn’t provide. The companies billed AT&T $13 million, but AT&T figured out the scam after paying only a fraction of that. The defendants, All American Telephone Co., e-Pinnacle Communications, Inc., and ChaseCom, operated out of Utah and Nevada and had all shut down by 2010. The Federal Communications Commission granted AT&T’s complaint against the companies in March 2013 and last week ordered the defendants to pay back the $252,496.37 they got from AT&T. VMware’s desktop virtualization software for Macs, Windows PCs, and Linux are being upgraded today to support Windows 10 and new features to boost performance. VMware Fusion for Macs is up to version 8, while Workstation for Windows and Linux is up to version 12. Both products have an improved graphics engine to support DirectX 10 and OpenGL 3.3. If you think mini-ITX is too big but don’t like the soldered down processor of the Intel NUC , the chip giant has come up with a new form factor that splits the difference: 5×5. Measuring, er, 5.5 inches by 5.8 inches (compared to the 4.5″×4.4″ of the NUC, and the 6.7″×6.7″ of mini-ITX), the new offering in many ways slides directly in between the form factors that bookend it. Like mini-ITX, it has an LGA socket compatible with Intel’s Core-branded processors. But like the NUC, it uses SODIMM memory, M.2 drives , and an external power supply. It also sacrifices mini-ITX’s PCIe slot. 2.5″ SATA drives are also an option, though they will increase the system height a little. So while the 5×5 leans much closer to the NUC spec list than the mini-ITX one, that processor and socket make a world of difference. The NUC processors top out at 28W for the Broadwell Core i7-5557U. Even that’s something of an outlier; every other current generation NUC uses a 15W or 6W chip. The 5×5, however, will have two thermal targets: 35W and 65W. Though 65W systems will be a little taller to accommodate a larger heatsink, support for any Intel Core processor with a TDP up to 65W makes the system a lot more versatile. For example, the Broadwell Core i7-5775C is a 65W part. This powerhouse chip includes 128MB of eDRAM, and as a result it’s surprisingly credible at gaming. This is a chip that can play Bioshock Infinite at 1920×1080 in high quality at 30 fps, Tomb Raider in low quality at 64 fps, and Dirt Showdown in medium quality at 46 fps. The worst thing about having a phone or laptop stolen isn’t necessarily the loss of the physical object itself, though there’s no question that that part sucks. It’s the amount of damage control you have to do afterward. Calling your phone company to get SIMs deactivated, changing all of your account passwords, and maybe even canceling credit cards are all good ideas, and they’re just the tip of the iceberg. Using strong PINs or passwords and various Find My Phone features is a good place to start if you’d like to limit the amount of cleanup you need to do, but in this day and age it’s a good idea to encrypt your device’s local storage if at all possible. Full-disk or full-device encryption (that is, encrypting everything on your drive, rather than a specific folder or user profile) isn’t yet a default feature across the board, but most of the major desktop and mobile OSes support it in some fashion. In case you’ve never considered it before, here’s what you need to know. Why encrypt? Even if you normally protect your user account with a decent password, that doesn’t truly protect your data if someone decides to swipe your device. For many computers, the drive can simply be removed and plugged into another system, or the computer can be booted from an external drive and the data can be copied to that drive. Android phones and tablets can be booted into recovery mode and many of the files on the user partition can be accessed with freely available debug tools. Windows 10 won’t run games with SecuROM DRM, says Microsoft

While Windows 10 is  largely good news for gamers , it turns out that those with a collection of older games laden with DRM copy protection software are going to have a hard time getting them up and running on the new OS. In an interview with Rocket Beans TV (as translated by Rock, Paper, Shotgun ) at this year’s Gamescom, Microsoft’s Boris Schneider-Johne explained that that Windows 10 won’t be able to run games that use SafeDisc and SecuROM technology. “Everything that ran in Windows 7 should also run in Windows 10,” said Johne, “There are just two silly exceptions: antivirus software, and stuff that’s deeply embedded into the system needs updating—but the developers are on it already—and then there are old games on CD-ROM that have DRM. This DRM stuff is also deeply embedded in your system, and that’s where Windows 10 says, ‘Sorry, we cannot allow that, because that would be a possible loophole for computer viruses.’ That’s why there are a couple of games from 2003-2008 with SecuROM, etc. that simply don’t run without a no-CD patch or some such.” This isn’t a bad thing for most people, though. While SafeDisc has hit the headlines before thanks to security issues in Windows— introducing access vulnerabilities into the OS , for example—it’s SecuROM that is the most famous, and the most hated of all DRM software. Developed by Sony DADC, SecuROM took a heavy-handed approach to DRM, limiting the number of installs and activations end-users had access to, as well as requiring users to check in online to keep the game running. Health Watchdog To Bring Legal Action Against Soylent Over Lead, Cadmium Levels

An anonymous reader writes: We’ve previously discussed Soylent, the self-proclaimed “meal replacement.” The product has not been without controversy, and now it’s likely to see some more: As You Sow, a non-profit foundation dedicated to corporate responsibility, plans to bring legal action against Soylent for failing to provide sufficient warning about the amount of lead and cadmium in it. They allege that a serving of Soylent contains 12 to 25 times the concentration of lead at which point consumers in the state of California must be warned. The concentration of cadmium, they say, is four times the current maximum. Soylent has acknowledged the results of heavy metal tests but says the levels present in Soylent are not toxic. As You Sow maintains that Soylent’s marketing focus on replacing food suggests chronic exposure, which is more of an issue than an occasional indulgence. Read more of this story at Slashdot.
