Nanowires help produce hydrogen fuel using sunlight

You ideally want to produce clean hydrogen fuel using clean sources, and Dutch researchers have taken a big step toward making that a practical reality. They’ve built a solar cell that uses a grid of gallium phosphide nanowires to make hydrogen gas from water. The approach gets a useful yield of about 2.9 percent in lab tests. That may not sound like much, but it’s about 10 times more effective than previous techniques and uses 10, 000 times less exotic material. It’s still going to take more refinements before this kind of technology is practical. Even hooking up silicon cells to a battery nets a 15 percent yield, for example. If scientists improve their methods, though, you could be driving hydrogen cars whose fuel is eco-friendly at every step, not just when it’s in your vehicle. Spotify tells iOS users how to avoid iTunes charges and pay less

Spotify isn’t happy that its iOS customers have to pay an additional $3 for a premium subscription if they make the purchase through the App Store. That’s why it’s planning to send them instructions on how to apply for a subscription straight from the company’s website. The Verge got its hands on a copy of the letter, wherein Spotify made clear that “the normal Premium price is only $9.99, but Apple charges 30 percent on all payments made through iTunes.” That ups the total to $12.99, which is only $2 away from Apple Music’s six-person family plan. That email, if you haven’t gotten it yet, contains links that make it easy to cancel Spotify’s auto-renew on iTunes and redirect you to the service’s website. You’ll have to wait until your current month ends before you can subscribe again, but after you do, you won’t have to pay $12.99 again. As Bloomberg notes, Apple doesn’t allow links within apps that allow people to make purchases from external websites. That’s likely what prompted the streaming service to decide on sending an email blast instead of adding a PSA inside the app. The publication also points out that Apple only adds $$$ on top of goods or services if it doesn’t have a competing product. For instance, you apparently don’t have to pay extra if you buy a plane ticket through United Airlines’ iPhone app . Since Cupertino’s new Music streaming service has a lot of competitors in addition to Spotify, it’s facing antitrust investigations in a couple of states. Turkish government blocks Youtube to shut down spread of phone recording in which PM conspires to hide millions from investigators

The Turkish government has doubled down on its Internet censorship program, blocking all of Youtube in addition to its ban on Twitter . Despite theories about the political theatre of blocking Twitter , it seems like Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is also genuinely concerned with suppressing a recording of a conversation with his son in which he conspires to hide the money he is thought to have received through corrupt dealing. As with the Twitter block, this one was undertaken as an administrative order from the PM’s office, without judicial oversight. The Twitter ban has since been rescinded by the Turkish courts, but the block may not be lifted before the elections. There is still no official announcement by TİB, the government authority in charge of internet regulation and the organ who implements blocking decisions. However, YouTube’s URL and title appeared on BTK’s (higher organ that includes TİB) web page where the blocked URLs are listed. The site is still accessible through some ISPs, but the blocking is expected to be implemented fully in an hour’s time by all ISPs. The government banned Twitter last week on the grounds that the company fails to remove ‘illegal’ content according to Turkish authorities. Yesterday, an administrative court ruled for the suspension of the execution of Twitter blocking. Last week, Google Inc. has announced that it declined the requests coming from the Turkish government in recent weeks to remove YouTube videos revealing extensive corruption involving PM, his family, ministers, businessmen and several government officials, the Wall Street Journal reported. Archos GamePad 2 outed with quad-core CPU, higher-res display

Even in the age of the NVIDIA Shield , dedicated Android gaming handsets are still a bit of a rarity, which is all more of a reason to take a gander at the leaked GamePad 2 from Archos. The device first reared its head at the FCC , and thanks to an online retailer — which has since scrubbed all references to the product — we’re now treated to a press shot and a smattering of technical specs for the successor to the original GamePad . This time around, it’s purported to sport a slightly more dense 1, 280 x 800, 7-inch IPS display, along with a 1.6GHz quad-core CPU and 2GB of RAM. In addition to the previously available 8GB model, a new 16GB version is said to be in the works, and in both cases, the GamePad 2 will retain a microSD expansion slot. There’s no word yet on pricing or availability, but you can bet that we’ll hear more from Archos soon enough. Filed under: Gaming Comments Via: SlashGear , Liliputing Source: HKTDC (inactive)

California lets kids erase ‘Bieber Fever’ phase from online past

Worried your tweenage web musings will tarnish your Harvard application? The Golden State is giving kids with less than perfect online judgment a clean slate . California Senate Bill 568 will require various online services offering access to minors the chance to remove all of the information they’ve posted. There’s a hard deadline of 2015 for the option to kick in, but this isn’t a catch-all: It only applies to content the user posts about themselves , not what a friend might tag them in. According to CNET , this only eliminates the public appearance of youthful folly, it doesn’t nuke it from a company’s servers; after all, the internet is written in pen. Regardless, this is an important step toward safeguarding kids (from themselves, mostly) of the post broadband boom-generation. Seriously, if you’re reading this and are under 18, think at least three times before you post something on the internet. Trust us . Filed under: Internet Comments Source: CNET

CyanogenMod 10.1.3 arrives with remote find and wipe capabilities

Good news is now at hand for CyanogenMod fans who like a bit of stability in their lives, because the general release builds of CyanogenMod 10.1.3 are now hitting server mirrors. As a nice bonus, support for CM Account is baked into this release (previously available only in the 10.2 nightlies), which allows users to locate and remotely wipe their missing devices — a feature that’s awfully similar to Android Device Manager . If all goes according to plans, CyanogenMod 10.1.3 will be the last of the Android 4.2-based builds, as the team is now investing the bulk of its work on CyanogenMod 10.2, which is based on Android 4.3. Once you have the latest version, perhaps you’ll consider pairing it with the impressive Focal camera app. Filed under: Software , Mobile Comments Source: CyanogenMod (Google+)

Microsoft’s new Surface Pro 2 gets official

The Surface RT’s full-fledged Pro counterpart just got an update. Today, Microsoft unveiled the follow-up to that x86 / Windows 8 -compatible tablet: the Surface Pro 2 and it still comes with a stylus. According to Microsoft’s claims, this new tablet boasts 50 percent more color accuracy, better graphics performance, an improved speaker setup and some speed gains — it’s purportedly 20 percent faster than the original. Battery life has gotten a significant 75 percent boost as well thanks to the Haswell processor inside and now runs much quieter. The Surface Pro 2 can also be paired with Microsoft’s new Power Cover to give the tablet 2.5x its standalone battery life or the Type Cover 2, which is now 1mm thinner and backlit. The kickstand has also been revised for the refresh, as it’s now a two-stage affair, addressing the issues many users had with the old Pro’s awkward angle. As for ports, Microsoft says the Surface Pro 2 is loaded up with support for three USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, mini DisplayPort, ethernet, audio in/out and, of course, charging. The Surface Pro 2, when docked, can also output up to a 3, 840 x 2, 160 resolution on an external display and is capable of editing 6K video. %Gallery-slideshow89981% Developing… Filed under: Tablets , Microsoft Comments

Microsoft announces the Surface 2, the follow-up to the original Surface RT

As promised, Microsoft has just revealed the Surface 2 here at its Surface-themed press event . Whereas the new Surface Pro 2 makes subtle changes to the original Pro, the Surface 2 is being billed as a totally revamped version of the original Surface RT. As rumored , it moves up to a higher-res 1080p ClearType display — the same one you’ll find on the new Surface Pro 2. Performance-wise, Microsoft says it’s doubled the BUS speed for the WiFi and the memory, and the CPU speed has increased “dramatically” as well. There’s also a USB 3.0 port on board, a step up from the USB 2.0 connection used on the original. All told, says Microsoft, the new model should run three to four times as fast as its predecessor, and the battery life should be 25 percent longer too. As for the design, this looks similar to the original, at least from a few feet away, but it’s thinner, lighter and is built from two pieces of magnesium, not three. And, of course, it sports the same two-stage kickstand as the new Surface Pro 2, which should make it easier to balance in your lap. Valve announces SteamOS, a new game platform for living room-based PCs

PC game service operator and game development studio Valve announced SteamOS this afternoon, finally formalizing a PC gaming hardware project known as ” Steambox ” we’ve heard dribs and drabs about over the past few years. The OS will function on “any living room machine, ” and it also streams games from your Mac and PC, as well as offering media playback functionality. “Just turn on your existing computer and run Steam as you always have – then your SteamOS machine can stream those games over your home network straight to your TV, ” the announcement page says. The OS is free and built on Linux; it will be available “soon.” Valve says it’s “achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing, and we’re now targeting audio performance and reductions in input latency at the operating system level, ” with regards to streaming capability. “Game developers are already taking advantage of these gains as they target SteamOS for their new releases.” No specific developers are named, but a job posting from Crytek points at one suspect. The project is intended to compete with traditional game consoles, and it seemingly evolves Steam’s ” Big Picture Mode ” to that end. Valve specifically lists four new features as the pillars of SteamOS: in-home streaming, family sharing, music / TV / movies, and family options.
