Researchers Unveil Genome of ‘Immortal’ Cell Line Derived From Cancer Victim

vinces99 writes “Scientists have unveiled a comprehensive portrait of the genome of the world’s first immortal cell line, known as HeLa, derived in 1951 from an aggressive cervical cancer that killed Henrietta Lacks, a 31-year-old African-American woman. The cells, taken without her or her family’s knowledge, were pivotal in developing the polio vaccine, in vitro fertilization and cloning, and were the subject of a 2010 New York Times best-seller ‘The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.’ The Lacks family has never been compensated and, until this new University of Washington study, has never had a say in how the information is used. The study, published Aug. 8 in Nature, pieced together the complicated insertion of the human papillomavirus genome, which contains its own set of cancer genes, into Lacks’ genome near an ‘oncogene, ‘ a naturally occurring gene that can cause cancer when altered. Scientists had never succeeded in reproducing cells in a culture until the HeLa cells, which reproduced an entire generation every 24 hours and never stopped. The cells allowed scientists to perform experiments without using a living human. The researchers discovered that the genome of the HeLa cell line, which has been replicated millions, if not billions of times, has remained relatively stable.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Samsung Begins Mass Production of Industry’s First 3D NAND Flash

Lucas123 writes “Samsung has announced it is mass producing the industry’s first three-dimensional (3D) Vertical NAND (V-NAND) flash memory that breaks through current planar NAND scaling limits, offering gains in both density and non-volatile memory performance. The first iteration of the V-NAND is a 24-layer, 128Gbit chip that will eventually be used in embedded flash and solid-state drive applications, Samsung said. It provides 2 to 10 times higher reliability and twice the write performance of conventional 10nm-class floating gate NAND flash memory. Initial device capacities will range from 128GB to 1TB, ‘depending on customer demand.’ ‘In the future, they could go considerably higher than that, ‘ said Steve Weinger, director of NAND Marketing for Samsung Semiconductor. Samsung’s process uses cell structure based on 3D Charge Trap Flash (CTF) technology and vertical interconnect process technology to link the 3D cell array. Moscow Subway To Use Special Devices To Read Data On Passengers’ Phones

dryriver writes “‘The head of police for Moscow’s subway system has said stations will soon be equipped with devices that can read the data on the mobile telephones of passengers. In the July 29 edition of Izvestia, Moscow Metro police chief Andrei Mokhov said the device would be used to help locate stolen mobile phones. Mokhov said the devices have a range of about 5 meters and can read the SIM card. If the card is on the list of stolen phones, the system automatically sends information to the police. The time and place of the alert can be matched to closed-circuit TV in stations. Izvestia reported that ‘according to experts, the devices can be used more widely to follow all passengers without exception.’ Mokhov said it was illegal to track a person without permission from the authorities, but that there was no law against tracking the property of a company, such as a SIM card.’ What is this all about? Is it really about detecting stolen phones/SIM cards, or is that a convenient ‘cover story’ for eavesdropping on people’s private smartphone data while they wait to ride the subway? Massachusetts Enacts 6.25% Sales Tax On "Prewritten" Software Consulting

Door-To-Door Mail Delivery To End Under New Plan

First time accepted submitter Hugh Pickens DOT Com writes “Reuters reports that under a cost-saving plan by the US Postal Service, millions of Americans accustomed to getting their mail delivered to their doors will have to trek to the curb and residents of new homes will use neighborhood mailbox clusters. ‘Converting delivery away from door delivery to either curb line or centralized delivery would enable the Postal Service to provide service to more customers in less time, ‘ says Postal Service spokeswoman Sue Brennan. More than 30 million American homes get door-to-door delivery and another 50 million get their mail dropped at their curbside mailboxes. But the Post Service, which is buckling under massive financial losses, sees savings in centralized mail delivery. Door-to-door delivery costs the Postal Service about $353 per address each year while curbside delivery costs $224, and cluster boxes cost $160 per address. But unions say it’s a bad idea to end delivery to doorsteps and will be disruptive for the elderly and disabled. ‘It’s madness, ‘ says Jim Sauber, chief of staff for the National Association of Letter Carriers. ‘The idea that somebody is going to walk down to their mailbox in Buffalo, New York, in the winter snow to get their mail is just crazy.'” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Iodine deficiency remains the world’s leading cause of preventable mental retardation. According to a new study (abstract), its introduction in America in 1924 had an effect so profound that it raised the country’s IQ. A new NBER working paper from James Feyrer, Dimitra Politi, and David N. Weil finds that the population in iodine-deficient areas saw IQs rise by a full standard deviation, which is 15 points, after iodized salt was introduced…. Apache OpenOffice 4.0 Released With Major New Features

An anonymous reader writes “Still the most popular open source office suite, Apache OpenOffice 4 has been released, with many new enhancements and a new sidebar, based on IBM Symphony’s implementation but with many improvements. The code still has comments in German but as long as real new features keep coming and can be shared with other office suites no one is complaining.” The sidebar mentioned brings frequently used controls down and beside the actual area of a word-processing doc, say, which makes some sense given how wide many displays have become. This release comes with some major improvements to graphics handling, too; anti-aliasing makes for smoother bitmaps. In conjunction with this release, SourceForge (also under the Slashdot Media umbrella) has announced the launch of an extensions collection for OO.
