The State of ReactOS’s Crazy Open Source Windows Replacement

jeditobe writes with a link to a talk (video recorded, with transcript) about a project we’ve been posting about for years: ambitious Windows-replacement ReactOS: “In this talk, Alex Ionescu, lead kernel developer for the ReactOS project since 2004 (and recently returning after a long hiatus) will talk about the project’s current state, having just passed revision 60000 in the SVN repository. Alex will also cover some of the project’s goals, the development and testing methodology being such a massive undertaking (an open source project to reimplement all of Windows from scratch!), partnership with other open source projects (MinGW, Wine, Haiku, etc…). Alex will talk both about the infrastructure side about running such a massive OS project (but without Linux’s corporate resources), as well as the day-to-day development challenges of a highly distributed team and the lack of Win32 internals knowledge that makes it hard to recruit. Unifying Undersea Wireless Communication Using TCP/IP

Nerval’s Lobster writes “Wireless and cellular networks cover beaches and extend over the ocean to ships at sea but not, so far, under the ocean. A team of researchers at the University of Buffalo believe they’ve solved at least the technical problem of how to push wireless networking signals for long distances through the deep ocean to connect offshore oil and gas platforms, floating and underwater tsunami sensors and other remote facilities without having to bounce signals off a satellite first. Radio waves tend to be smothered or distorted by travel through water; most ocean-based sensors use acoustic waves instead, which link sensors into underwater acoustic sensor networks (UWASN). The team designed a low-power IPv4/IPv6-compatible networking protocol that uses very low power, compresses headers, is tolerant of fragmented data and connection delays, allows bi-directional communication with (and reconfiguration of) existing underwater sensors and is compatible with standard TCP/IP networks and IP router proxies. The approach is more than a simple translation from one networking medium to another. It leaves the higher-level TCP/IP networking protocols intact, but adds an adaptation layer between the data-link layer and network layer that compresses headers, changes packet size, transmission time-out settings and other requirements to be compatible with slower underwater transmissions. The team tested the implementation using a Linux-based driver, both PC and ARM-based computers and a Teledyne Benthos SM-75 Modem. They sealed two network nodes in 40-pound waterproof cases, dumped them into Lake Erie near Buffalo and transmitted instant-messaging signals from the application IPTUX from one to the other. Cisco Slashes 4,000 Jobs

Dawn Kawamoto writes “Cisco’s CEO John Chambers dealt employees a blow Wednesday, saying the networking giant would cut 4, 000 workers from the payroll. Not quite a death blow, but this 5 percent cut could leave some employees gasping. Verizon Accused of Intentionally Slowing Netflix Video Streaming

colinneagle writes “A recent GigaOm report discusses Verizon’s ‘peering’ practices, which involves the exchange of traffic between two bandwidth providers. When peering with bandwidth provider Cogent starts to reach capacity, Verizon reportedly isn’t adding any ports to meet the demand, Cogent CEO Dave Schaffer told GigaOm. ‘They are allowing the peer connections to degrade,’ Schaffer said. ‘Today some of the ports are at 100 percent capacity.’ Why would Verizon intentionally disrupt Netflix video streaming for its customers? One possible reason is that Verizon owns a 50% stake in Redbox, the video rental service that contributed to the demise of Blockbuster (and more recently, a direct competitor to Netflix in online streaming). If anything threatens the future of Redbox, whose business model requires customers to visit its vending machines to rent and return DVDs, it’s Netflix’s instant streaming service, which delivers the same content directly to their screens.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Windows 8 scrubs North Korean launch

Kim Jong-un is wishing that he was still running Windows 95 like he was last year when they were able to successfully run launch tests. The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) stated that a launch test had to be put on hold due to “problems with Windows 8.” KCNA goes on to say that they are “working with Windows 8 support to resolve the issue.” There is no word what the exact nature of the problems Jong-un was experiencing, but perhaps ctrl/alt/delete might work. So what do you think was on that support ticket? I would love to know who the support staffer was so we could get a copy, but I am guessing that in the ‘description of issue’ section it went something like: “Failure to launch”

Microsoft Makes Millions Renting Campus Space to Vendors

theodp writes “In a move that would do Bill Lumbergh (YouTube homage) proud, Microsoft has been pulling in about $25 million a year through its unusual practice of charging its vendors for occupying office space on its campus while working on Microsoft projects, according to the real estate firm that manages the program. And that’s before a planned July 1st rate increase that Microsoft informed vendors of earlier this week, which will boost the ‘chargeback’ rate for its ‘shadow workforce’ from $450 per month ($5,400 per year) for every workstation to $510 per month (or $6,120 per year). ZigBee IP spec goes public, offers open IPv6 mesh networking

While ZigBee hasn’t become as ubiquitous in wireless as the likes of Bluetooth or WiFi, it has carved out niches in home automation and low-power gear. The format is about to expand its world a little further now that a more network-savvy spec, ZigBee IP, is officially available for everyone. The upgrade adds IPv6 and tougher security to the open mesh networking formula, letting it more easily join an internet of things where there’s potentially billions of connected devices. The ZigBee Alliance isn’t naming customers at this stage, although it’s quick to note that ZigBee IP was built for smart grid use: don’t be surprised if you first see it behind the scenes, keeping energy use in check. New submitter NuclearCat writes “Polish security researchers have found a backdoor in TP-Link routers, allowing an attacker to not only gain root access to the local network, but also to knock down the router via a CSRF attack remotely. (Further information — Google translation of Russian original). According to the researchers, TP-Link hasn’t yet responded to give an answer about issue.
