Xbox exec reveals Scorpio has 9GB of RAM available for games

We’re still a couple of days away from Microsoft officially revealing its Project Scorpio Xbox, but details continue to dribble out. Xbox & Windows gaming platform VP Mike Ybarra tweeted that the team “Unlocked extra GB of RAM for (game developers), now 9GB of GDDR5.” The console’s specs include 12GB of GDDR5 RAM built-in (the devkits that we’ve seen feature 24GB of RAM), but as with other game systems, some of its resources are reserved to handle system features, multitasking apps and other non-game elements. We’ll keep tuning Scorpio to empower creators to share the best versions of their games. Early demos of the Project Scorpio hardware have shown its ability to handle 4K, 60fps gaming, but every bit of extra RAM doesn’t hurt, as Ybarra explained that even when games don’t use the extra RAM directly (read: unoptimized existing Xbox One games), it will be available for caching to speed things up. The only thing that hasn’t expanded, however, is the space on your DVR, which you may need since Xbox boss Phil Spencer says the company’s Sunday afternoon press conference is likely to stretch beyond the scheduled 90 minutes. Microsoft’s ‘Project Scorpio’ games will run in native 4K

You’d be forgiven for doubting that Microsoft’s Project Scorpio could really deliver on the promise of 4K gaming. Most PlayStation 4 Pro games won’t run in true 4K , and the current wave of 4K-capable PC video cards cost more than whole consoles . However, Microsoft vows that there won’t be any trickery involved with its own titles. In an interview with USA Today , the company’s Shannon Loftis says that all first-party games arriving “in the Scorpio time frame” will run in native 4K — you’ll have at least a few games to show what your new TV can do. Loftis doesn’t say which games those are, although that isn’t surprising when Scorpio is roughly a year away. All the same, the 4K commitment could be crucial to giving the new Xbox hardware a strong start. Even if many third-party games resort to upscaling instead of real 4K, you’ll have some incentive to buy the new system. It won’t necessarily make you forget about the PS4 Pro (game selection, as always, is a crucial factor), but it might just tempt you to upgrade from an original Xbox One instead of holding out a little while longer. Microsoft announces a new super-powered Xbox console: Project Scorpio

Microsoft and Oculus announced a close partnership at last year’s E3, but we haven’t seen much out of it just yet. That’s changing today, as Microsoft just announced a new version of the Xbox console — one that’s optimized to work with 4K visuals and high-quality VR out of the box. Project Scorpio will launch at the Holiday season in 2017, but most notable is the fact that all games and all accessories will work across the Xbox One, the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio. Microsoft showed off a video in which a number of developers touted the console’s massive power — it’ll feature “true” 4K resolution, 6 teraflops of GPU power and will run at 60Hz. It’ll of course be VR-ready, and Bethesda noted it’ll run Fallout 4 in VR, as announced last night. While Microsoft didn’t mention Oculus by name, the two companies have a partnership that was announced at last year’s E3 . So it seems highly likely that the Rift will be the headset of choice for Project Scorpio. Phil Spencer alluded to such a development earlier this year , saying that he envisioned a future in which your game library stayed with you and in which consoles were upgraded faster in a more PC-like fashion. Naturally, there’s no word on price yet, and we’re guessing Project Scorpio won’t be the console’s launch name. But Microsoft’s biggest fans clearly have a lot to look forward to in the coming year or so — the big question for those who don’t own an Xbox will be whether to buy a Xbox One S, or wait until next year for Project Scorpio. But at least if you buy the One S, all your games will work if you upgrade to Scorpio. Follow all the news from E3 2016 here !
