Netflix launches in 130 new countries, but not in China, Syria, or North Korea

Big streaming content news out of CES this morning: Netflix is now live in 130 additional countries , which makes its service available to billions of new users. The most notable exception: China. CEO Reed Hastings made the announcement at the annual Consumer Electronics Forum in Las Vegas today. “You are witnessing the birth of a global TV network,” he said. Netflix “won’t be available in Crimea, North Korea and Syria due to U.S. government restrictions on American companies,” the company said. Countries where Netflix will now be available include Azerbaijan, India, Vietnam, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Saudia Arabia, South Korea, Singapore, Turkey and Indonesia can now use Netflix–but presumably with certain restrictions, in certain nations. ” Netflix Is Now Available Around the World ” [netflix press release] [ CNN via @ brianstelter ]

Here’s a fun way to browse the 187,000 digital items in the NY library’s public domain collection

I could get lost on this page for weeks. The stereoscopic views are great, if you know how to see them with your eyes. On January 6th, 2016, The New York Public Library made over 187K digital items in the public domain available for high resolution download. This is one of many experiments by the NYPL Labs to help patrons understand and explore what was contained in that release.

Radiohead’s rejected theme song for the James Bond movie Spectre

Radiohead says, “Last year we were asked to write a theme tune for the Bond movie Spectre. Yes we were. It didn’t work out, but became something of our own, which we love very much. As the year closes we thought you might like to hear it. Merry Christmas. May the force be with you.” (Image: Michell Zappa/Wikimedia )

Public domain illustrations from old books

Old Book Illustrations is a search engine and browseable library of—you’ve guessed it!—the engraved illustrations and litho prints found in old books. Choose the type of illustrations you want to see: animals or people, landscapes, buildings, etc. Choose your favorite illustrators from a list: Gustave Doré, John Leech, Charles H. Bennett…[and] Find illustrations by the title of the book or periodical in which they were published: Æsop’s fables, Punch, L’Illustration… The scans are high-resolution (though it appears the scanned items are sometimes worse-for-wear) and most come with lots of details about their original creation and printing.

Marriott removing desks from its hotel rooms "because Millennials"

Yahoo sport columnist Dan Wetzel checked into a Marriott, something he does a lot, and was bewildered to discover that his room didn’t have a desk. When he called down to the reception, he discovered that the whole chain was gradually removing its desks, because some consultants told them that Millennials like to chill on couches with their phones, not sit at desks like square-ass Old People. Watch all the exoplanets orbit their stars simultaneously

The Kepler telescope has found 685 systems with 1705 exoplanets, and you can watch them whirr around together in this mesmerizing animation by astrocubs . The data is from the NASA Exoplanet Archive . I made the visualization in Python: source code available here . The fact that the worlds and systems we’ve observed are so different from our own is a limitation of our observations, not of the universe. The orbits are shown to scale, but the planets are much larger than the orbits would suggest. Otherwise you wouldn’t be able to see them. The planets are not to scale with one another, either. Also, the orbits wouldn’t be perfectly circular, though I guess the animator might have made the simulation adhere to the laws of planetary motion an all the observed worlds have roughly-circular orbits. Of course the solar systems aren’t this close tog—look, sshhhh, just watch it, it’s pretty.
