The plant with 1000 faces

There is a vine that is capable of contorting the size, shape, color, orientation, and vein patterns of its leaves to match nearby foliage. It’s able to match not just one or two other species, but a whole host of them. Nobody has any clue how it knows what neighboring plants look like .

TSA agents demand bag-search to look for "Bitcoins"

Davi Barker was flying from Manchester, NH when, he says, he was stopped by two men who identified themselves as “managers” for the TSA, who claimed they had seen Bitcoins in his baggage and wanted to be sure he wasn’t transporting more than $10,000 worth. When he asked them what they thought a Bitcoin looked like, they allegedly said that it looked like a coin or a medallion. ( via Hacker News )

Meth offered ‘as casually as a cup of tea’ in North Korea, reports LA Times

There’s not much stigma attached to meth use in harsh North Korea, writes Los Angeles Times reporter Barbara Demick. Some take it to treat colds or boost their energy; students take it to work late. The drug also helps curb appetites in a country where food is scarce. It is offered up as casually as a cup of tea, North Koreans say. “If you go to somebody’s house it is a polite way to greet somebody by offering them a sniff,” said Lee Saera, 43, of Hoeryong, also interviewed in China. “It is like drinking coffee when you’re sleepy, but ice is so much better.” More: LA Times .

From the Northern to the Southern Cross (astronomy photo by Nicholas Buer)

Image: Nicholas Buer , via APOD . A particularly psychedelic Astronomy Picture of the Day : There is a road that connects the Northern to the Southern Cross but you have to be at the right place and time to see it. The road, as pictured above, is actually the central band of our Milky Way Galaxy; the right place, in this case, is dark Laguna Cejar in Salar de Atacama of Northern Chile ; and the right time was in early October, just after sunset. You can follow APOD on Twitter , too.

Hanging Gardens of Bablyon "found" … at Nineveh

Oxford University academic Dr Stephanie Dalley believes she has identified the precise location of the fabled Hanging Gardens of Bablyon : near Nineveh, hundreds of miles north. Dalley’s hypothesis has the gardens built not by Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, but by Assyrians under Sennacherib about 2,700 years ago. Nineveh’s ruins now lie on the city limits of modern-day Mosul.

Google Maps image of boy’s dead body to be removed

Google Maps is replacing a satellite image that shows the body of Kevin Barrera, a 14-year-old who was murdered in 2009 in Richmond, California. The boy’s father, Jose Barrera, apparently found out about the picture just a few days ago, commenting “When I see this image, that’s still like that happened yesterday.” Google says it will take eight days to swap it out. “Google has never accelerated the replacement of updated satellite imagery from our maps before, but given the circumstances we wanted to make an exception in this case,” Google Maps VP Brian McClendon told the San Francisco Chronicle. I don’t care to reproduce the sad image here, but the San Francisco Chronicle did. ” Google to fix map image showing slain boy ” (SF Chronicle)
