Android 4.3 supports TRIM, improves performance on Nexus devices

It’s no secret that many Android phones and tablets show a decrease in performance over time. Nexus devices are not immune — it’s particularly noticeable with the original Nexus 7 . Our friend Brian Klug over at A nandTech discovered an interesting tidbit while testing the new and improved Nexus 7 : Android 4.3 supports TRIM . What this means is that Google’s mobile OS can now instruct the flash storage controller when to collect / recycle unused data pages / blocks. The net result is that devices running Android 4.3 will no longer become sluggish with time — in fact, existing Nexus handsets and tablets will see performance improve after the update. It also looks like Jelly Bean invokes TRIM maintenance once within a 24-hour window (after one hour of inactivity), and only if the battery is 80% full (30% when charging). Even Google Reader Replacements Are Shutting Down

When Google Reader finally closed its doors, it shoved thousands of teary-eyed RSS fans into cyberspace, adrift, where we flailed around desperately for a suitable replacement. Many services rose to the challenge , but the incoming wave was a lot to handle. Thailand bans using Bitcoin in any way, local startup reports

A Bitcoin startup based in Thailand now says that it has suspended all operations  because the Bank of Thailand has effectively banned bitcoins in the southeast Asian country. As Bitcoin Co. Ltd. reports: At the conclusion of the meeting, senior members of the Foreign Exchange Administration and Policy Department advised that due to lack of existing applicable laws, capital controls, and the fact that Bitcoin straddles multiple financial facets the following Bitcoin activities are illegal in Thailand: – Buying bitcoins – Selling bitcoins – Buying any goods or services in exchange for bitcoins – Selling any goods or services for bitcoins – Sending bitcoins to anyone located outside of Thailand – Receiving bitcoins from anyone located outside of Thailand This appears to be the first time that any country has outright banned the digital crypto currency . Further, it remains unclear exactly how Thailand would even enforce such a ban. Ars has been unable to confirm the ban with the Bank of Thailand , when this ban goes into effect, and how this decision came about.
