Diamond Rain In Saturn

Taco Cowboy writes “Back in 1999, it was postulated that diamonds may rain from the sky in the atmospheres of our solar system’s gas giants. Now, research has shown that diamond rains on Saturn are more than probable. ‘”We don’t want to give people the impression that we have a Titanic-sized diamondberg floating around, ” said researcher Mona Delitsky, of California Specialty Engineering, “We’re thinking they’re more like something you can hold in your hand.” Recent data compiled by planetary scientists … has been combined with newly published pressure temperature diagrams of Jupiter and Saturn. These diagrams, known as adiabats, allow researchers to decipher at what interior level that diamond would become stable. They also allow for calculations at lower levels – regions where both temperature and pressure are so concentrated that diamond becomes a liquid. Imagine diamond rain or rivulets of pure gemstone.’ ‘At even greater depths, the scientists say the diamond will eventually melt to form liquid diamond, which may then form a stable ocean layer.’ Read more of this story at Slashdot.

BBC releases rediscovered Doctor Who episodes as iTunes exclusives (video)

There are a few things that make Doctor Who fans wince in pain, none more so than mentioning the BBC’s policy of deleting its archives of early ’60s episodes . However, enterprising fans have scoured the globe looking for film canisters, and all but 106 had been found — until now. Nine new episodes, including parts 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6 of The Enemy Of The World as well as episodes 2, 4, 5 and 6 of The Web of Fear were discovered in Nigeria earlier this year. After being brought up to broadcast standard by the BBC’s peerless Restoration Team, both serials are now available exclusively on iTunes, until their DVD release, that is, for $9.99/£9.99 each. That should keep us amused until November 23rd , at least. Filed under: Home Entertainment , Portable Audio/Video , HD Comments Source: Doctor Who (iTunes)

Facebook to rip search opt-out from under those who were using it

Here’s the dialog you’ll see if you were opted out of search, when Facebook gets around to opting you back in. Facebook If you checked that box saying you don’t want to appear in Facebook search results, get ready: soon, that choice is going away. Facebook announced in a blog post Thursday that it’s removing the ability to opt out of appearing in search results, both for friends and globally, for those who’ve had it enabled. Facebook actually removed the search opt-out for everyone who didn’t have it enabled early this year, around the time it introduced Graph Search . Now, ten months later, Facebook is giving the boot to anyone who actually cared enough to opt out, referring to the checkbox as an “old search setting.” Facebook claims that less than one percent of users were taking advantage of the feature. In simpler times, Facebook was smaller and easier to navigate, and everyone had a privacy setting asking “Who can look up your timeline by name?” Now that there are so many profiles that users become confused when they know they have a friend or know someone in a group, but try to find them by search and they don’t appear, says Facebook. Researchers get slo-mo footage of the collapse of a quantum waveform

Research from UC Berkeley’s Kater Murch and team has allowed fine observation of a quantum waveform collapse. Observing single quantum trajectories of a superconducting quantum bit , published in Nature , describes the experiment, which used indirect observations of microwaves that had passed through a box containing a circuit where a particle was in a state of superposition, allowing the researchers to view the collapse in slow-motion.

Scientists Found the Remains of a Water-Covered Earth-Like Planet

A team of astrophysicists have made an exciting however complex discovery a mere 170 light years away. In their own words , it’s “the first evidence of a water-rich rocky planetary body” outside of our own solar system to have evidence of water. It’s the “rocky” bit that makes it Earth-like.
