I say “and shows” because this art form combined the spoken word with compelling visuals in uniquely Japanese storytelling performances and this book is rich with many wonderful reproductions of the hand-painted artwork. Picture this: In devastated post-WWII Tokyo, a man stops his bicycle on a street corner. On the back of his bike is mounted a large, sixty-pound wooden box. The man flips a few panels around to reveal a stage-like picture frame. He noisily clacks together two wooden sticks, hiyogoshi , to call the neighborhood children. As they gather to see and hear the free show, the man sells them home-made penny candies, including a not-too-sweet taffy that’s pulled and stretched using a chopstick (like today’s movie business, the real money is in the profitable concessions!). The paying customers get a front row seat to the performance. The man slides a sequence of large, colorful panels in the frame “screen” as he tells adventure stories, quizzes the audience, and weaves tales of suspense, all with character voices and sound effects. As the story ends on a dramatic, to-be-continued cliff-hanger, the man packs up his two-wheel theater and pedals away … until next time. They are all but vanished now, but these performances date back to the 1930s when 2,500 kamishibaiya in Tokyo alone entertained 1 million kids a day. Any fan of manga, anime, as well as comics in general will devour this book. The reproductions of the lurid images of action heroes, monsters, villains, and damsels in distress in the stories embody a potent mix of influences: Japanese ink brush work, movie posters, silent film and cinematic design, and plenty of Western references. The army of artists that painted these panels freely borrowed from many genres, from Betty Boop to folk tales. In turn, kamishibai set the stage for the manga and anime that took its place (many of the same artists moved along with them). As the advent of television made these live street performances obsolete (television was first called denki kamishibai , or “electric paper theater”), the artists lifted from popular TV shows for their dying art form. Holy copy-cat, Batman! You’ll enjoy the witty captions, wide–ranging historical references and the clever writing style. This book also shows and tells how kamishibai was used to disseminate news, spread propaganda, illustrate war survival techniques, and fight prejudices. In a parallel to the congressional hearings and criticism by Wertham of the U.S. comic makers, kamishibai also was investigated and regulated. You’ll read (and see) other interesting facts, like the technological and historical reason why comics have always been an important media form in Japan. (Hint: what if your language doesn’t suit itself to using Gutenberg’s movable type?). Manga Kamishibai is a real treat for any fan of Japanese pop culture (candy not included).

iOS 9.3.2 is here, fixes iPhone SE Bluetooth problems and other bugs

The most significant fix is related to the iPhone SE, which ” could experience audio quality issues ” when paired to Bluetooth headsets. The full release notes are below: Fixes an issue where some Bluetooth accessories could experience audio quality issues when paired to the iPhone SE Fixes an issue where looking up dictionary definitions could fail Addresses an issue that prevented typing email addresses when using the Japanese Kana keyboard in Mail and Messages Fixes an issue for VoiceOver users using the Alex voice, where the device switches to a different voice to announce punctuation or spaces Fixes an issue that prevented MDM servers from installing Custom B2B apps All of these fixes are for minor edge cases that affect only small fractions of the iOS userbase—major development on iOS 9 stopped with iOS 9.3 , at which point Apple presumably shifted its focus to the new version of iOS that we’ll see at WWDC next month. The update is available for all devices that support iOS 9, including the iPhone 4S and newer; iPad 2 and newer; all iPad Minis and iPad Pros; and the fifth- and sixth-generation iPod Touches. Apple also released minor updates for its other iOS-derived platforms, the Apple Watch and the fourth-generation Apple TV. The release notes for watchOS 2.2.1 and tvOS 9.2.1 don’t name any specific fixes, but if you want the latest “bug fixes and security updates” you can download both of them now. OS X 10.11.5 and iTunes 12.4 updates bring security and usability fixes

The company also released iTunes 12.4, a minor update that tweaks the user interface in an effort to simplify it. The El Capitan update doesn’t change much. There are quite a few security fixes  and a few tweaks related to enterprise usage , but little in the way of user-visible changes. iTunes 12.4 is more noticeable change. It doesn’t fix the core problem with iTunes—that having one program to handle local music, streamed music from Apple Music, TV and movie purchases, podcasts, and iOS device backups and administration makes for lots of clutter and confusion—but it does present a marginally more streamlined version of the app everyone loves to hate. The top navigation bar has had several buttons removed, and the app uses a persistent sidebar instead of multiple drop-down menus to let you view your media. iTunes versions of yore also made heavier use of sidebars for navigation—sometimes the old ways really are best. Scientists made see-through wood that’s stronger than glass

Researchers at the University of Maryland were able pull away color and chemicals from a block of wood to leave it impressively see-through. The result is a material that is both stronger and more insulating than glass, with better biodegradability than plastic. “We were very surprised by how transparent it could go, ” said Liangbing Hu, who wrote about the project in Advanced Materials . Hu’s team isn’t the only group that’s developed a technique for transparent wood — Swedish researchers have also been able to clear out that pesky visible pulp, replacing it with a transparent polymer. The treatment techniques appear pretty similar: it’s a two-stage process. The researchers first boiled the wood in water, sodium hydroxide and other chemicals for roughly two hours. This flushes out lignin, the molecule responsible for giving wood its color. The team then poured epoxy over the block which makes the wood four to five times stronger, although it makes it all a little less environmentally-friendly in the process. One of the great properties of the treated wood is how it retains the structure and natural channels from when it was a tree. These micro-channels can then deliver light similarly to how it moved nutrients around as part of a plant. “In traditional material the light gets scattered, ” said Hu. “If you have this waveguide effect with wood, more light comes into your house.” So what’s stopping us living in see-through wood houses, aside from privacy issues? Size limitations. Five by five-inch wood blocks are as large as they’ve been able to make it work, ranging in thickness from paper thin to about a centimeter thick — far more substantial than what Swedish researchers have shown off so far. Dr. Hu and the University of Maryland scientists are is still working to scale it up further. If the team can accomplish that there’s no shortage of applications, ranging from windows, building materials and furniture to smaller, precise, optical equipment that’s normally made from glass or plastic. Hidden FBI Microphones Exposed In California

An anonymous reader writes: “Federal agents are planting microphones to secretly record conversations, ” reports CBS Local, noting that for 10 months starting in 2010, FBI agents hid microphones inside light fixtures, and also at a bus stop outside the Oakland Courthouse, to record conversations without a warrant. “They put microphones under rocks, they put microphones in trees, they plant microphones in equipment, ” a security analyst and former FBI special agent told CBS Local. “I mean, there’s microphones that are planted in places that people don’t think about, because thats the intent!” Federal authorities are currently investigating fraud and bid-rigging charges against a group of real estate investors, and the secret recordings came to light when they were submitted as evidence. “Private communication in a public place qualifies as a protected ‘oral communication’…” says one of the investor’s lawyers, “and therefore may not be intercepted without judicial authorization.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

890 College Students Sue Google Over Email Scanning

An anonymous reader quotes this report from Bay Area Newsgroup: Legal action against Google by four UC Berkeley students has ballooned into two lawsuits by 890 U.S. college students and alumni alleging the firm harvested their data for commercial gain without their consent…making the same claim: that Google’s Apps for Education, which provided them with official university email accounts to use for school and personal communication, allowed Google until April 2014 to scan their emails without their consent for advertising purposes…. The suit by 710 students alleged that until April 2015, Google denied it was scanning students’ emails for advertising purposes and misled schools into believing the emails were private. The students’ lawyers say each student is seeking a maximum of $10, 000, while the U.S. District Court Judge Lucy Koh told the lawyer that “Our clerk’s office is really unhappy you are circumventing our [$400 per case] filing fees by adding 710 cases under one case number.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Ethical Hackers Donate 1,000,000 Air Miles To Charity

An anonymous reader writes:Certified ethical hackers at Offensi.com identified a bug allowing remote code execution on one of United Airlines’ sites, and submitted their findings to the airline’s “bug bounty” program. After a fix was placed into production, their team was awarded 1, 000, 000 Mileage Plus air miles, which they say was accompanied by an email informing them that the IRS would consider their award as $20, 000 of taxable income. “If after evaluating the taxable amount you choose not to accept your award, you are also able to donate your award to charity, ” the e-mail explained. The hackers ultimately chose to distribute their air miles among three charities — the Ronald McDonald house, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and the Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos Organization.
