UCLA discovers how solar cells’ charges can last for weeks

Solar cells have always been inspired by photosynthesis, so it’s only natural for researchers to take cues from different aspects of the energy-making process. A team of UCLA chemists, for instance, have developed a way that will allow solar cells to keep their charge for weeks instead of just a few seconds like current products are capable of. According to Sarah Tolbert, UCLA chem professor and one of the study’s authors , they looked into plants’ nanoscale structures that can keep negatively charged molecules separated from positively charged ones. “That separation is the key to making the process so efficient, ” she said. The team has discovered that in order to mimic those nanoscale structures in plastic solar cells (which are potentially cheaper to make than silicon-based ones), they need to use two components: a polymer donor and a nano-scale fullerene acceptor. The team describes the process as follows: The UCLA technology arranges the elements more neatly — like small bundles of uncooked spaghetti with precisely placed meatballs (see image below). Some fullerene meatballs are designed to sit inside the spaghetti bundles, but others are forced to stay on the outside. The fullerenes inside the structure take electrons from the polymers and toss them to the outside fullerene, which can effectively keep the electrons away from the polymer for weeks. In short, those two can form the right “noodle and meatball” structure to keep different charges away from each other for days to weeks, greatly improving a cell’s capability to retain power. It’s also a plus that the components can auto-assemble, simply by putting them in water. The ability to store energy is a big deal for solar energy systems, since they need to be able to save enough power to use at night or during days when the sun isn’t shining as brightly. Facebook’s Absurd Pseudonym Purgatory

An anonymous reader sends a story from a writer whose Facebook account was locked because somebody reported it as using a pseudonym. It doesn’t, but Facebook demands a look at identification documents before releasing control over the account. Anyone whose name doesn’t sound “real” to Facebook is at risk for this, and the social network doesn’t even have a consistent stance on what an “authentic” name is. “Aside from the complexity of identity, the policy is haphazardly enforced at best. At worst, it’s dangerous and discriminatory, and has demonstrably and repeatedly been used to target people who often already are marginalized and vulnerable.” Matt Cagle, attorney for the ACLU, says, “By controlling the identity of the speaker with this policy, Facebook has the effect of both reducing speech and eliminating speakers from the platform altogether. 500Mbps broadband for $55 a month offered by wireless ISP

An Internet service provider called  Webpass  sells consumers 500Mbps upload and download speeds for just $55 a month—and instead of selling it over fiber or cable, the company says it delivers the service with point-to-point wireless technology. The service is targeted at multi-unit residential buildings and businesses; the company also plans to install fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP) in some locations, but hasn’t done so yet. Webpass was started in 2003 in San Francisco, raising the speeds over the years as wireless technology has improved, but founder Charles Barr says it’s pretty common for people to tell him that they’ve “never heard of Webpass.” That’s because the point-to-point service Webpass offers is only financially feasible in big cities, and even then not in single family homes. “We’re building-specific,” Barr, who was a network administrator before founding Webpass, told Ars. “It does me no good to put a billboard up in the city and say, ‘hey, call Webpass,’ and have half the city call and say, ‘I live in a single-family home, can you bring me service for $55?’ The answer is no. Former red light camera CEO pleads guilty to bribery, fraud in Ohio

A former CEO of Redflex, the embattled red light camera vendor, has pleaded guilty to bribery and wire fraud in Columbus and Cincinnati, Ohio. In December 2013, Ars reported on red light cameras nationwide, and in particular, Redflex’s four cameras in the central California town of Modesto. Karen Finley was indicted on related charges in August 2014 in Chicago. She pleaded not guilty, and had been set to go to trial in October 2015. NASA mission sends back fuzzy, color ‘movies’ of Pluto

Sure, Pluto doesn’t have full-fledged planetary status anymore, but we’re still excited to get some pictures from the edge of the Solar System . The New Horizons spacecraft is carrying a “Multicolor Visible Imaging Camera” that takes stills in blue, red, and near-infrared, then puts them together for a color picture. It took a series of pictures between May 29th and June 3rd that show the dwarf planet and its largest moon, Charon revolving around their shared center of gravity. The mission will make its closest approach to Pluto on July 14th when it gets about 7, 800 miles above the surface (shown above in an artist rendering). 5G Network Speed Defined As 20 Gbps By the International Telecommunication Union

An anonymous reader writes with a report at Mobipicker (linking to a Korea Times story) that a 12-member committee from the International Telecommunication Union has hashed out a formal definition of the speed requirements for 5G mobile networking; the result has been designated IMT-2020, and it specifies that 5G networks should provide data speeds of up to 20Gbps — 20 times faster than 4G. From the Korea Times story: The 5G network will also have a capacity to provide more than 100 megabits-per-second average data transmission to over one million Internet of Things devices within 1 square kilometer. Video content services, including ones that use holography technology, will also be available thanks to the expanded data transmit capacity, the ministry said. … The union also decided to target commercializing the 5G network worldwide by 2020. To do so, it will start receiving applications for technology which can be candidates to become the standard for the new network. "Let’s Encrypt" Project To Issue First Free Digital Certificates Next Month

An anonymous reader writes: Let’s Encrypt, the project that hopes to increase the use of encryption across websites by issuing free digital certificates, is planning to issue the first ones next month. Backed by the EFF, the Mozilla Foundation, the Linux Foundation, Akamai, IdenTrust, Automattic, and Cisco, Let’s Encrypt will provide free-of-charge SSL and TSL certificates to any webmaster interested in implementing HTTPS for their products. The Stack reports: “Let’s Encrypt’s root certificate will be cross-signed by IdenTrust, a public key CA owned by smartphone government ID card provider HID Global. Website operators are generally hesitant to use SSL/TLS certificates due to their cost. An extended validation (EV) SSL certificates can cost up to $1, 000. It is also a complication for operators to set up encryption for larger web services.
