Microsoft brings Android, iOS apps to Windows 10

SAN FRANCISCO—Microsoft announced a four-pronged effort to bring developers and their apps to Windows at its build conference today. One of these prongs—a way for Web developers to present their sites as apps—was already announced at Mobile World Congress earlier in the year. The second prong is logical but not altogether surprising. In Windows 10, developers will be able to specially prepare existing Windows apps, whether Win32, .NET WinForms, .NET WPF, or any other Windows development technology, and sell them through the Windows Store. Unlike the “traditional” Windows application installation experience, these apps will be guaranteed to install, update, and uninstall cleanly—one of the important things that Store apps do to ensure that users feel confident trying apps out and removing them if they don’t like them. Behind the scenes, virtualization technology will be used to provide this isolation and robustness. Islandwood and Astoria The next two prongs are the more surprising: Microsoft is going after Android and iOS developers. With Project Islandwood, iOS developers will be able to take their iOS apps and build them for Windows. Microsoft has developed an Objective C toolchain and middleware layer that provide the operating system APIs that iOS apps expect. A select group of third parties have been using the Islandwood tools already, with King’s Candy Crush Saga for Windows Phone being one of the first apps built this way. King’s developers had to change only a “few percent” of the code in order to fully port it to Windows Phone. Read 6 remaining paragraphs | Comments

iPad ‘test model’ swiped in Cupertino kidnapping

Despite Apple’s notorious love for secrecy, it famously lost a prototype device in the past (maybe even two ), when one of its employees left it in a bar. Now, the company might have lost another: a 20-year-old man reported that a couple robbed his Cupertino home and took an iPad “test model” with them, along with $7, 500, prescription drugs and more electronics. It’s unclear at this point what exactly “test model” means, and if it’s a prototype for an upcoming version or one for an earlier iteration. Either way, it hasn’t been returned yet, even though the couple is already in custody. According to Mercury News , the victim was kidnapped by the duo after answering the woman’s advertisement (its nature wasn’t revealed) and meeting them two blocks away. They all drove to the victim’s house, where his guests pepper-sprayed him at knifepoint. While authorities refused to divulge more details about the tablet, we’ll likely hear more about it in case it’s an upcoming version. After all, Apple has already proven that it’ll go to great lengths to retrieve and protect its unreleased devices. Filed under: Tablets , Mobile , Apple Comments Via: 9to5mac Source: Mercury News

How One Tweet Wiped $8bn Off Twitter’s Value

An anonymous reader writes: Someone mistakenly published earnings information on a Nasdaq-run investor relations page for Twitter before the company officially released the news and it sent the stock into a tailspin. Initially the earnings statement went unnoticed, but soon a Tweet with the results got a lot of attention. The stock lost more than $8 billion at one point as news spread. “We asked the New York Stock Exchange to halt trading once we discovered our Q1 numbers were out, and we published our results as soon as possible thereafter, ” said Twitter’s senior director for investor relations, Krista Bessinger. “Selerity, who provided the initial tweets with our results, informed us that earnings release was available on our Investor Relations site before the close of market. Nasdaq hosts and manages our IR website, and we explicitly instructed them not to release our results until after the market close and only upon our specific instructions, which is consistent with prior quarters. We are continuing to investigate with them exactly what occurred.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Russian Cargo Spacehip Declared Lost

schwit1 writes: The Russians have declared lost the Progress freighter that had been launched to the ISS yesterday. They never could regain control of the craft, plus it was in an incorrect orbit. Moreover, the U.S. Air Force has detected debris nearby, suggesting a significant failure of some kind. The Russians are now considering delaying the next manned launch, scheduled for May 26, while they investigate this failure. Both Soyuz and Progress use some of the same systems, including the radar system that failed on Progress, and they want to make sure the problem won’t pop up on the manned mission. At the same time, they are also considering advancing the launch date of the next Progress to ISS from August 6. Based on these reports, I think they might swap the launch dates for the two flights. A Dragon is scheduled to go to ISS in between these missions, though that schedule could be changed as well to accommodate the Russian plans. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

3 atom-thick transistor promises ultra-thin electronics

Researchers from Cornell University announced a breakthrough in transistor technology in the latest issue of the journal, Nature . The team has reportedly developed a novel and highly efficient method of producing an experimental material known as transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD). TMD is an exceedingly thin (but highly conductive) film, which makes it useful in many high-tech applications — everything from solar cells to flexible, wearable gadgets — but also makes it a huge pain to produce in appreciable quantities. That is, until now. “Our work pushes TMDs to the technologically relevant scale, showing the promise of making devices on that scale, ” Saien Xie, one of the paper’s lead authors. TMD, like the similarly touted wonder-material graphene , could help extend Moore’s Law by providing a stable and compact substrate onto which engineers can pack an ever-increasing number of circuits. However, since it’s only three atoms thick, TMD production typically suffers from a high rate of breakage and failure. The new method from Cornell, which mixes diethylsulfide and a metal hexacarbonyl compound atop a silicon wafer and then bakes them for 26 hours in hydrogen gas, has proven far more successful. Out of a batch of 200 such wafers created for the study, only two failed — that’s a 99 percent success rate. With these results in hand, the research team hopes to streamline the manufacturing process as well as improve the consistency of the resulting film. The technology is still at least a few years away from being commercially viable but when it is, we could see it usher in a new era of paper-thin, super-powerful electronics.
