How a Failed Super-Blimp Project Led to an Indoor Tropical Island Paradise in the Middle of Germany

The sky was the limit for Cargolifter AG, the German company that designed a gigantic heavy lift airship in the 1990s called the CL 160 . The super-blimp was meant to carry 160 metric tons over a distance of up to 10, 000 kilometers, all without the need for airports; in a natural disaster, it could carry enough food to feed over 25, 000 people for two weeks, and could drop it off in an area inaccessible by conventional vehicles. To build something that big—the CL 160 would displace over half a million cubic meters—required a big-ass hangar. So in 2000, flush with dot-com cash from an IPO, Cargolifter built a gi-normous hangar nearly a quarter of a mile in length. It’s as tall as a football field is long. It’s so large that if the Eiffel Tower fell over, you could drag it completely inside the hangar and not bang into anything; there are no support pillars holding up the roof, as it’s a completely self-supporting dome. But within a couple of years, the technically-complicated CL 160 project went bust, having burned through all of the cash before it could produce the blimp. The company was out of money by 2002, and in 2003 they were forced to sell the hangar—which they’d spent €78 million to build—at an eye-watering 80% discount. A Malaysian company snapped it up, and started doing something pretty bizarre: They spent nine months building a magnificent artificial lagoon and white-sand beach inside. They trucked in palm trees and flew a small army of Balinese craftsmen in to build a Southeast Asian village. By 2004 Tropical Islands was open for business, giving visitors access to a climate half a world away. For the past ten years they’ve continued building inside the dome, which now houses the world’s largest indoor rainforest. There’s a huge sauna/spa complex, a network of water slides, restaurants, shopping, guest lodges and tents you can rent for overnight stays. You can even go freaking BASE jumping inside the thing.  Look at the scale of this place (and if you’re at work, turn your speakers up to annoy your co-workers with the catchy theme song): The blimp that was meant to be built inside the structure never came to be, but in a supreme bit of irony, there are a couple of airships inside: Visitors can ride a tethered hot-air balloon up to the ceiling, or cruise around inside the dome in a free-floating hot-air balloon. XBMC’s Kodi media player officially hits the Play Store

Kodi’s media player got a name change last year and now it has something even better — official Android status. The app formerly known as XBMC is now available on the Google Play store for all takers. It actually arrived to the store last month in beta form , but prior to that could only be sideloaded on Android. Version 15 (codenamed Isengard) now supports Android 5-specific features like 4K and variable refresh rates on certain Android TV devices, like NVIDIA’s Shield . Another new trick on all platforms is “adaptive seeking” that lets you search material faster by tapping a key several times. There’s also new audio and subtitle lists, an updated add-on manager, improved video queuing and better live TV closed-captioning. It has other minor tweaks and fixes (check the source), and the XBMC foundation said that the next release would support DirectX 11. You can grab the app now on Google Play, but just remember that Kodi is a deep app, so leave yourself some time (and possibly some help ) to get it working. Forever 21’s ‘Thread Screen’ displays Instagram pics using fabric

Most companies seek out the latest displays for high-tech billboards, but Forever 21 has decided to take a different route for this particular Instagram project. For the past year-and-a-half, the folks at connected hardware maker Breakfast New York have been building a “Thread Screen” for the company. It’s called that, because well, it’s literally a screen made of 6, 400 mechanical spools of multicolored threaded fabric. Those spools have five-and-a-half feet of fabric each, divided into 36 colors that transition every inch-and-a-half. They move like a conveyor belt, stopping at the right hue based on what picture they’re displaying — an infrared even scans the finished product to make sure each spool is displaying the correct color. According to Breakfast NY, which also created a smart street sign among other installations in the past, the machine weighs 2, 000 pounds and has over 200, 000 components. It’s a gargantuan display, and you’ll get the chance to control it from today, July 22nd, up until July 28th. When you post a photo on Instagram and use #F21ThreadScreen as a hashtag, the device’s accompanying software will take your image and optimize it for the screen’s 80×80 resolution. You’ll then get an edited video of your picture as the Thread Screen transformed to display it — check out this editor’s profile photo being ran through the system below to see an example of what you’re getting. F21 and Breakfast are live streaming the machine as it displays photo after photo for 24 hours from now until the project ends. British man receives world’s first bionic eye implant for macular degeneration

A British man has become the first person in the world to receive a bionic eye implant that corrects for age-related macular degeneration (AMD)—the most common cause of vision loss in adults. The implant was a success: previously, the patient had no central vision at all; now, he has low-resolution central vision. The operation was carried out at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital; the recipient of the implant was Ray Flynn, aged 80. The macula is at the back of the eye, in the central region of the retina. It is responsible for all of your high-resolution central vision—that is, when you gaze directly at something, it is the visual receptors in the macula that turn the light that reaches them into vision. With AMD, detritus (called drusen) slowly builds up between the vascular layer of the eye (the choroid) and the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)—the layer that rods and cones are attached to. If too much drusen builds up, blood blow to the RPE is reduced enough that the rods and cones wither. AMD happens quite slowly, but eventually it can result in a complete loss of central vision, which makes it hard to recognise faces, read books, interact with computers, and so on. AMD is common amongst older people, and as our average life expectancy continues to increase, so does the number of people with AMD: about 500,000 people have it in the UK, and between 2 and 3 million people have it in the US. Nanowires help produce hydrogen fuel using sunlight

You ideally want to produce clean hydrogen fuel using clean sources, and Dutch researchers have taken a big step toward making that a practical reality. They’ve built a solar cell that uses a grid of gallium phosphide nanowires to make hydrogen gas from water. The approach gets a useful yield of about 2.9 percent in lab tests. That may not sound like much, but it’s about 10 times more effective than previous techniques and uses 10, 000 times less exotic material. It’s still going to take more refinements before this kind of technology is practical. Even hooking up silicon cells to a battery nets a 15 percent yield, for example. If scientists improve their methods, though, you could be driving hydrogen cars whose fuel is eco-friendly at every step, not just when it’s in your vehicle.
