A lost ‘Doctor Who’ episode featuring Tom Baker is finally here

Doctor Who fans have waited nearly four decades for today. Shada — an episode that began filming in 1979 with Tom Baker as the legendary Time Lord — is finally finished and available to download (a DVD will be released in the UK on December 4th, and in the US on January 9th). An animated segment and a new scene were produced to fill in the footage gaps, both of which feature Baker reprising his role as the Doctor. To add to the prestige, the episode was also written by Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy author Douglas Adams. As you can expect, Shada was an almost mythical entry in the series for fans. But it wasn’t the only “lost” episode. Last year, the BBC also released an animated version of The Power of the Daleks using audio from the original episode, after losing the source video. That recreation was produced by Charles Norton, who also spearheaded the animated segment in “Shada.” Via: Variety Source: iTunes

‘Batman: The Animated Series’ is coming to Blu-ray in 2018

Batman: The Animated Series is finally getting the remaster treatment it deserves. From this weekend’s New York Comic Con Warner Bros. announced that “later in the year” in 2018 it will release the influential animated show to high-def formats. As Polygon notes , the specifics are a bit fuzzy at this point. Will the 85-episode show come out all in one boxed set, or in volumes like the DVDs before? At this point that’s up in the air. However, any package will likely look and sound better than streaming the show on Amazon Prime . Plus, every episode will almost assuredly have the iconic opening credits sequence attached. This summer Warner released Batman: Mask of the Phantasm on Blu-ray, the PG-rated feature-length movie that takes place in the Animated Series universe. If you want a peek at how gussied up episodes of the old series might look on Blu-ray, that’s probably your best bet.

Netflix will stream Matt Groening’s fantasy cartoon ‘Disenchanted’

It’s been almost 30 years since Matt Groening launched his yellow nuclear Simpsons family on the Fox network. It’s been about 18 since he took to the stars with Futurama . Both series have been successful, with plenty of recent merchandise , VR celebrations and mobile games to keep fans invested in the respective animated universes. Groening is headed to Netflix with his next project, Disenchantment , another animated series for grown ups. This time, however, Groening will explore the epic fantasy genre via the misadventures of the “hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion Elfo, and her personal demon Luci.” “Ultimately, ” said Groening in a statement, ” Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and wizards and other jerks tell you.” Disenchantment has an all-star voice cast as well. The lead voice actors feature BoJack Horseman ‘s Abbi Jacobson as Bean, Nat Faxon from The Cleveland Show as Elfo and American Dad’ s Eric Andre as Luci. The cast will also have Futurama ‘s John Dimaggio and Ren and Stimpy ‘s Billy West along for the ride. The animation is being created by the same studio that does Futurama , Rough Draft Studios. The show itself will appear on Netflix in ten episode blocks starting in 2018. Source: Netflix

Not an April Fool: Rick and Morty third season premiere surprise-launched online [Updated]

Adult Swim A full day of Rick and Morty -related teases and jokes on Twitter ended with a nice April Fool’s surprise from Adult Swim on Saturday: The complete first episode of the animated series’ upcoming third season. As of press time, it’s playing over and over at Adult Swim’s default live-streaming site.  ( Update : Readers are noting that it’s also airing on the TV version of Adult Swim/Cartoon Network this evening, though channel guides have mis-advertised its listing.) Much like the second season’s premiere, this episode is built to resolve the prior season’s cliffhanger arc, and that may make it a confusing episode for anybody unfamiliar with the show. (If you’ve never watched the bonkers sci-fi cartoon series, head to Hulu to binge, post-haste.) Series fans, on the other hand, can look forward to a nice mix of deep-lore reveals and out-of-nowhere weirdness. Read 2 remaining paragraphs | Comments

Watch the first trailer for ‘The Angry Birds Movie’

Yes, folks, it’s all happening. The first trailer for The Angry Birds Movie has arrived. Directed by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly (both first timers), and written by Jon Vitty ( The Simpsons ), the animated film seems to focus on the origin story of why these famous birds are, well, angry. Red, perhaps the most popular character, is voiced by Jason Sudeikis, while Danny McBride does the honors for Bomb — you know, the black bird who likes to blow up. The rest of the cast is made up by other well-known stars , including Bill Hader, Josh Gad, Maya Rudolph and Peter Dinklage. Interestingly enough, The Angry Birds Movie is now slated to hit theaters in May 2016, a couple of months earlier than originally announced . Source: Angry Birds (YouTube)
