The Fastest Camera Ever Made Captures 100 Billion Frames Per Second

Jason Koebler writes A new imaging technique is able to capture images at 100 billion frames per second—fast enough to watch light interact with objects, which could eventually lead to new cloaking technologies. The camera was developed by a team at Washington University in St. Louis—for the team’s first tests, it was able to visualize laser pulse reflections, photons racing through air and through resin, and “faster-than-light propagation of non-information.” It can also be used in conjunction with telescopes and to image optical and quantum communications, according to lead researcher Liang Gao. DreamWorks Reveals Glimpse of "Super Cinema" Format For VR Films

An anonymous reader writes Warren Mayoss, Head of Technology Product Development at DreamWorks Animation, spoke at the 2014 Samsung Developer Conference last week about the company’s forays into the young medium of virtual reality. In addition to real-time experiences, DreamWorks is exploring ways to enabled their bread and butter in VR: high-fidelity pre-rendered CGI. One method the company is exploring is a “Super Cinema” format: pre-rendered 360 degree 3D frames to be projected around the user in virtual reality. Windows 8 and 8.1 Pass 15% Market Share, Windows XP Drops Below 20% Mark

An anonymous reader writes Everyone is well-aware by now that Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 have not seen the impressive adoption rate of their predecessor. Yet the duo had a particularly good run last month, finally passing 15 percent market share together. Together, they owned 16.80 percent of the market at the end of October, up from 12.26 percent at the end of September. Windows XP meanwhile dropped a whopping 6.69 points to 17.18 percent. The biggest catalyst for these changes was most likely back to school sales in September, which are better reflected in the data after students use their new machines for a full month. Integrated Circuit Amplifier Breaches Terahertz Barrier

jenningsthecat writes: DARPA’s Terahertz Electronics program has created “the fastest solid-state amplifier integrated circuit ever measured.” The Terahertz Monolithic Integrated Circuit (TMIC), boasts a gain of 9dB — previously unheard of for a monolithic device in this frequency range. Plus, the status of “fastest” has been certified by Guinness — seriously! (‘Cause you might not trust DARPA, but you gotta trust Guinness — right?). CHP Officers Steal, Forward Nude Pictures From Arrestee Smartphones

sabri writes: Following the initial suspension of a California Highway Patrol officer earlier this week, news has come out that the CHP has an entire ring of officers who steal and subsequently share nude pictures. The nudes are stolen from women who are arrested or stopped. Officer Sean Harrington of Martinez reportedly confessed to stealing explicit photos from the suspect’s phone, and said he forwarded those images to at least two other CHP officers. Software Glitch Caused 911 Outage For 11 Million People

HughPickens.com writes: Brian Fung reports at the Washington Post that earlier this year emergency services went dark for over six hours for more than 11 million people across seven states. “The outage may have gone unnoticed by some, but for the more than 6, 000 people trying to reach help, April 9 may well have been the scariest time of their lives.” In a 40-page report (PDF), the FCC found that an entirely preventable software error was responsible for causing 911 service to drop. “It could have been prevented. But it was not, ” the FCC’s report reads. “The causes of this outage highlight vulnerabilities of networks as they transition from the long-familiar methods of reaching 911 to [Internet Protocol]-supported technologies.” On April 9, the software responsible for assigning the identifying code to each incoming 911 call maxed out at a pre-set limit; the counter literally stopped counting at 40 million calls. As a result, the routing system stopped accepting new calls, leading to a bottleneck and a series of cascading failures elsewhere in the 911 infrastructure. Adm. David Simpson, the FCC’s chief of public safety and homeland security, says having a single backup does not provide the kind of reliability that is ideal for 911. “Miami is kind of prone to hurricanes. Had a hurricane come at the same time [as the multi-state outage], we would not have had that failover, perhaps. So I think there needs to be more [distribution of 911 capabilities].” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Chemists Grow Soil Fungus On Cheerios, Discover New Antifungal Compounds

MTorrice writes: Many drugs that treat bacterial and fungal infections were found in microbes growing in the dirt. These organisms synthesize the compounds to fend off other bacteria and fungi around them. To find possible new drugs, chemists try to coax newly discovered microbial species to start making their arsenal of antimicrobial chemicals in the lab. But fungi can be stubborn, producing just a small set of already-known compounds. Now, one team of chemists has hit upon a curiously effective and consistent trick to prod the organisms to start synthesizing novel molecules: Cheerios inside bags. Scientists grew a soil fungus for four weeks in a bag full of Cheerios and discovered a new compound that can block biofilm formation by an infectious yeast. Tesla Is Starting a Certified Preowned Program

cartechboy writes Most luxury automakers have a Certified Previously Owned (CPO) program. Tesla isn’t like a normal luxury automakers, in fact, it’s not really like any automaker out there. It doesn’t have franchises and it sells its own vehicles through its network of galleries. Now, it plans to create its own CPO program. There are a great deal of Model S sedans out there currently under lease contracts. When those cars are ready to come back, Tesla has guaranteed that it will purchase them for a figure that falls somewhere between 43 and 50 percent of the original purchase price. This is exactly how Tesla’s going to create its CPO fleet. Tesla seems to do everything in an unconventional manner, so we’ll have to see if its CPO program behaves like every other automaker’s, or if it’s different somehow as well.
