assertation (1255714) writes with this interesting tidbit from Reuters about the state of solar power in Germany: German solar power plants produced a world record 22 gigawatts of electricity per hour — equal to 20 nuclear power stations at full capacity — through the midday hours on Friday and Saturday, the head of a renewable energy think tank said. The German government decided to abandon nuclear power after the Fukushima nuclear disaster last year, closing eight plants immediately and shutting down the remaining nine by 2022. Will 7nm and 5nm CPU Process Tech Really Happen?

An anonymous reader writes “This article provides a technical look at the challenges in scaling chip production ever downward in the semiconductor industry. Chips based on a 22nm process are running in consumer devices around the world, and 14nm development is well underway. But as we approach 10nm, 7nm, and 5nm, the low-hanging fruit disappears, and several fundamental components need huge technological advancement to be built. Quoting: “In the near term, the leading-edge chip roadmap looks clear. Chips based on today’s finFETs and planar FDSOI technologies will scale to 10nm. Then, the gate starts losing control over the channel at 7nm, prompting the need for a new transistor architecture. … The industry faces some manufacturing challenges beyond 10nm. The biggest hurdle is lithography. To reduce patterning costs, Imec’s CMOS partners hope to insert extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography by 7nm. But EUV has missed several market windows and remains delayed, due to issues with the power source. … By 7nm, the industry may require both EUV and multiple patterning. ‘At 7nm, we need layers down to a pitch of about 21nm, ‘ said Adam Brand, senior director of the Transistor Technology Group at Applied Materials. ‘That’s already below the pitch of EUV by itself. To do a layer like the fin at 21nm, it’s going to take EUV plus double patterning to round out of the gate. Mt. Gox CEO Returns To Twitter, Enrages Burned Investors

An anonymous reader writes Mark Karpeles doesn’t seem to understand how much anger and trouble the $400 million Mt. Gox fiasco caused his customers. According to Wired: “After a long absence, the Mt Gox CEO has returned to Twitter with a bizarre string of tone-deaf tweets that were either written by a Turing test chat bot, or by a man completely oblivious to the economic chaos he has wrought. His first message after losing hundreds of millions of dollars worth of bitcoins? ‘What would we do without busybox?’—a reference to a slimmed-down Linux operating system used on devices such as routers. He’s also Tweeted about a noodle dish called yakisoba and Japanese transportation systems.” Andreas Antonopoulos, the CSO with Blockchain says, “He continues to be oblivious about his own failure and the pain he has caused others. gavron (1300111) writes “We all know about TW Cable being acquired by Comcast (subject to regulatory approval) but news from today is that their non-cable business is being purchased by Level3 for almost 6 billion dollars. What used to be the ‘largest media and distribution company ever’ (AOL Time Warner) is now nothing more than a garage of pieces being parceled off to the first available bidder. Kingston and PNY Caught Bait-and-Switching Cheaper Components After Good Reviews

An anonymous reader writes Over the past few months, we’ve seen a disturbing trend from first Kingston, and now PNY. Manufacturers are launching SSDs with one hardware specification, and then quietly changing the hardware configuration after reviews have gone out. The impacts have been somewhat different, but in both cases, unhappy customers are loudly complaining that they’ve been cheated, tricked into paying for a drive they otherwise wouldn’t have purchased. Artificial Pancreas Shows Promise In Diabetes Test

An anonymous reader writes A cure for Type 1 diabetes is still far from sight, but new research suggests an artificial “bionic pancreas” holds promise for making it much more easily manageable. From the article: “Currently about one-third of people with Type 1 diabetes rely on insulin pumps to regulate blood sugar. They eliminate the need for injections and can be programmed to mimic the natural release of insulin by dispensing small doses regularly. But these pumps do not automatically adjust to the patient’s variable insulin needs, and they do not dispense glucagon. The new device, described in a report in The New England Journal of Medicine, dispenses both hormones, and it does so with little intervention from the patient.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Google Fiber Is Officially Making Its Way To Portland

An anonymous reader writes This week the Portland City Council has approved a franchise agreement with Google to bring its fiber service to Portland. “As a result of the unanimous vote, Google will be subject to a five percent ‘franchise fee’ on its video revenues. It won’t have to pay a three percent ‘PEG’ fee that Portland otherwise charges rival Comcast, but it will offer free Internet service for Portland residents for a $300, one-time fee. It’ll also provide free Internet service to some to-be-determined nonprofits, in addition to providing a total of three free Wi-Fi networks in various parts of the city.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Civilians Try to Lure an Abandoned NASA Spacecraft Back to Earth

A New York Time piece (as carried by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) outlines a fascinating project operating in unlikely circumstances for a quixotic goal. They want to control, and return to earth, the International Sun-Earth Explorer-3, launched in 1978 but which “appears to be in good working order.” Engineer Dennis Wingo, along with like minded folks (of whom he says “We call ourselves techno-archaeologists”) has established a business called Skycorp that “has its offices in the McDonald’s that used to serve the Navy’s Moffett air station, 15 minutes northwest of San Jose, Calif. After the base closed, NASA converted it to a research campus for small technology companies, academia and nonprofits. … The race to revive the craft, ISEE-3, began in earnest in April. At the end of May, using the Arecibo Observatory radio telescope in Puerto Rico, the team succeeded in talking to the spacecraft, a moment Mr. Wingo described as “way cool.” This made Skycorp the first private organization to command a spacecraft outside Earth orbit, he said. The most disheartening part: “No one has the full operating manual anymore, and the fragments are sometimes contradictory.” The most exciting? “Despite the obstacles, progress has been steady, and Mr. Wingo said the team should be ready to fire the engines within weeks.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

AT&T Says Customer Data Accessed To Unlock Smartphones

itwbennett writes: Personal information, including Social Security numbers and call records, was accessed for an unknown number of AT&T Mobility customers by people outside of the company, AT&T has confirmed. The breach took place between April 9-21, but was only disclosed this week in a filing with California regulators. While AT&T wouldn’t say how many customers were affected, state law requires such disclosures if an incident affects at least 500 customers in California. Read more of this story at Slashdot.
