Obama reportedly ordered implants to be deployed in key Russian networks

Enlarge (credit: Wikimedia Commons/Maria Joner) In his final days as the 44th president of the United States, Barack Obama authorized a covert hacking operation to implant attack code in sensitive Russian networks. The revelation came in an 8,000-word article The Washington Post published Friday that recounted a secret struggle to punish the Kremlin for tampering with the 2016 election. According to Friday’s article, the move came some four months after a top-secret Central Intelligence Agency report detailed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s direct involvement in a hacking campaign aimed at disrupting or discrediting the presidential race. Friday’s report also said that intelligence captured Putin’s specific objective that the operation defeat or at least damage Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton and help her Republican rival Donald Trump. The Washington Post  said its reports were based on accounts provided by more than three dozen current and former US officials in senior positions in government, most of whom spoke on the condition of anonymity. In the months that followed the August CIA report, 17 intelligence agencies confirmed with high confidence the Russian interference. After months of discussions with various advisors, Obama enacted a series of responses, including shutting down two Russian compounds, sanctioning nine Russian entities and individuals, and expelling 35 Russian diplomats from the US. All of those measures have been known for months. The  Post , citing unnamed US officials, said Obama also authorized a covert hacking program that involved the National Security Agency, the CIA, and the US Cyber Command. You’re An Adult, But Your Brain Might Not Be, Researchers Say

“The human brain reaches its adult volume by age 10, but the neurons that make it up continue to change for years after that, ” reports the New York Times, citing a new paper by neuroscience researchers that questions when “adulthood” really begins. An anonymous reader writes: One of the paper’s authors — an associate psychology professor at Harvard — tells CNN that “There is no agreed-on benchmark that, when reached, would allow a neuroscientist to say ‘Aha! This brain is fully developed’. However, it is safe to say that by almost any metric, the brain is continuing to develop actively well past the age of 18…” “Some children, researchers have found, have neural networks that look as if they belong to an adult…” adds the Times, noting that adolescents also “do about as well as adults on cognition tests, for instance. But if they’re feeling strong emotions, those scores can plummet. The problem seems to be that teenagers have not yet developed a strong brain system that keeps emotions under control.” And this cuts both ways, according to a psychologist at Temple University who wants the voting age lowered to 16. (“Sixteen-year-olds are just as good at logical reasoning as older people are, ” he tells the Times) But he also believes judges should consider the lack of emotional control when sentencing defendants — even if they’re in their early 20s. “Most crime situations that young people are involved in are emotionally arousing situations — they’re scared, or they’re angry, intoxicated or whatever.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Watch 2013 Obama debate 2006 Biden on NSA surveillance

Watch then-Senator Joe Biden from 2006 directly refute each point made by his now-boss, President Barack Obama, about the NSA surveillance program at a news conference last week. Dave Maass and Trevor Timm at the Electronic Frontier Foundation write : After a leaked FISA court document revealed that the National Security Agency (NSA) is vacuuming up private data on millions of innocent Americans by collecting all the phone records of Verizon customers, President Obama responded by saying “let’s have a debate” about the scope of US surveillance powers. At EFF, we couldn’t agree more. It turns out, President Obama’s most formative debate partner over the invasiveness of NSA domestic surveillance could his Vice President Joe Biden. Back in 2006, when the NSA surveillance program was first revealed by the New York Times , then-Senator Biden was one of the program’s most articulate critics . As the FISA court order shows, the scope of NSA surveillance program has not changed much since 2006, except for the occupant in the White House. Watch this video , as Senator Biden from 2006 directly refutes each point President Obama made about the NSA surveillance program at his news conference last week.
