A new ‘Star Wars’ trilogy is coming from ‘The Last Jedi’ director

The Last Jedi helmer Rian Johnson has signed on to write and direct a new trilogy within the Star Wars universe, Disney announced today . There aren’t any details to share about the new project yet, but the company explicitly noted that it’ll feature new characters and be completely separate from the Skywalker saga. If anything, the new spin-off trilogy is a sign that the company was pleased with his work on The Last Jedi , which hits theaters on December 5th. “We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi , ” Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in a statement. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.” Source: Disney

Navy leaks personal data for over 130,000 sailors

Another day, another data breach. While everyone is focused on pre-holiday activities, the Navy reveals that it was notified by Hewlett Packard Enterprise in October about a compromised laptop. Now, an investigation has determined that names and social security numbers of 134, 386 current and former sailors had been accessed by unknown individuals. Other than dumping the news out while few are paying attention, the Navy says it will notify those affected “in the coming weeks, ” by phone, letter and email. At this point, the Navy says it has not found evidence the information is being misused, but similar to the OPM data breach last year, this could have far-reaching consequences. The Navy Times cites an unnamed official saying the leaked info came from the Career Waypoints (C-WAY) database that handles re-enlistment and Navy Occupational Specialty requests. Source: US Navy

Long distance jammer knocks drones from the sky

The DroneDefender doesn’t make a cool sound when you pull the trigger, though, so I don’t like it. From Make : In a press release from Battelle, the gun is stated to use “radio control frequency disruption technologies to safely stop drones in the air, before they can pose a threat to military or civilian safety.” A video accompanying the post describes that it operates on standard GPS and ISM radio bands, allowing for it to interference with commercial UAV signals. Reportedly, the DroneDefender can hit objects up to 400 meters with an effective cone diameter of 30°. This is about as far as Battelle goes with the technical details, so the actual frequency ranges of the rifle still remain unknown.
