Clinton’s private e-mail was blocked by spam filters—so State IT turned them off

Part of an e-mail thread discussing workarounds to keep Hillary Clinton’s private e-mail server from being blocked by security filters at the State Department. 2 more images in gallery Documents recently obtained by the conservative advocacy group Judicial Watch show that in December 2010, then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and her staff were having difficulty communicating with State Department officials by e-mail because spam filters were blocking their messages. To fix the problem, State Department IT turned the filters off—potentially exposing State’s employees to phishing attacks and other malicious e-mails. The mail problems prompted Clinton Chief of Staff Huma Abedin to suggest to Clinton, “We should talk about putting you on State e-mail or releasing your e-mail address to the department so you are not going to spam.” Clinton replied, “Let’s get [a] separate address or device but I don’t want any risk of the personal [e-mail] being accessible.” The mail filter system—Trend Micro’s ScanMail for Exchange 8—was apparently causing some messages from Clinton’s private server (Clintonemail.com) to not be delivered. Some were “bounced;” others were accepted by the server but were quarantined and never delivered to the recipient. According to the e-mail thread published yesterday by Judicial Watch, State’s IT team turned off both spam and antivirus filters on two “bridgehead” mail relay servers while waiting for a fix from Trend Micro. Oklahoma State Troopers Use New Device To Seize Bank Accounts During Traffic Stops

mi writes from a report via news9.com KWTV: KWTV writes, “You may have heard of civil asset forfeiture. That’s where police can seize your property and cash without first proving you committed a crime; without a warrant and without arresting you, as long as they suspect that your property is somehow tied to a crime. Now, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a device that also allows them to seize money in your bank account or on prepaid cards. If a trooper suspects you may have money tied to some type of crime, the highway patrol can scan any cards you have and seize the money.” But do not worry: “If you can prove that you have a legitimate reason to have that money it will be given back to you. And we’ve done that in the past, ” said Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. John Vincent. Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Hacker Guccifer Claims He Easily and Repeatedly Broke Into Hillary Clinton’s Email Server

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Fox News: The infamous Romanian hacker known as “Guccifer, ” speaking exclusively with Fox News, claimed he easily — and repeatedly — breached former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s personal email server in early 2013. In the process of mining data from the Blumenthal account, Lazar said he came across evidence that others were on the Clinton server. “As far as I remember, yes, there were up to 10, like, IPs from other parts of the world, ” he said. From the report: “‘For me, it was easy … easy for me, for everybody, ‘ Marcel Lehel Lazar, who goes by the moniker ‘Guccifer, ‘ told Fox News from a Virginia jail where he is being held. Fox News could not independently confirm Lazar’s claims. The 44-year-old Lazar said he first compromised Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal’s AOL account, in March 2013, and used that as a stepping stone to the Clinton server. He said he accessed Clintonâ(TM)s server ‘like twice, ‘ though he described the contents as ‘not interest[ing]’ to him at the time.” Guccifer was sent to prison last month, which is when his potential role in the Clinton email investigation became apparent. Pro-Clinton Super PAC Caught Spending $1 Million On Social Media Trolls

An anonymous reader quotes a report from US Uncut: A Super PAC headed by a longtime Clinton operative is spending $1 million to hire online trolls to “correct” Bernie Sanders’ supporters on social media. Correct The Record (CTR), which is operated by Clinton attack dog and new owner of Blue Nation Review David Brock, launched a new initiative this week called “Barrier Breakers 2016” for the purpose of debating supporters of Senator Bernie Sanders — or “Bernie Bros, ” as they’re referred to in Correct the Record’s press official release — on Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, and other social media platforms. The “Barrier Breakers” will also publicly thank Hillary Clinton’s superdelegates and fans for supporting her campaign. The paid trolls are professional communicators, coming from public relations and media backgrounds. “The task force staff’s backgrounds are as diverse as the community they will be engaging with and include former reporters, bloggers, public affairs specialists, designers, Ready for Hillary alumni, and Hillary super fans who have led groups similar to those with which the task force will organize, ” CTR stated. US government says 22 Clinton emails contain top secret info

Just days before the 2016 election cycle really kicks into gear, the US government offered new details on the Clinton email fiasco . With the Iowa caucuses set to take place soon, the Obama administration confirmed for the first time that messages from Hillary Clinton’s private server did in fact contain sensitive information. In fact, 22 of the emails have been censored as they included top secret details and state secrets. The Associated Press reports that seven email chains are being withheld from the next release from the State Department due to their sensitive nature. What’s more, 37 pages include details on “special access programs” like confidential sources or government surveillance. “The documents are being upgraded at the request of the intelligence community because they contain a category of top secret information, ” said State Department spokesman John Kirby. Some of the messages won’t be published online at all, even with black boxes cover up the sensitive info. It’s not clear whether Clinton sent the emails herself or exactly what they contained. Back in December, reports of top secret emails being stored on the server first surfaced. The State Department will further investigate if the details were classified as the time they were discussed in these most recent emails. Timing couldn’t be worse for the Democratic front-runner for the 2016 presidential nomination. With the big showdown with opponent Bernie Sanders in Iowa looming, today’s news won’t help ease critics’ concerns. Clinton has maintained that she never sent or received info on her personal email account that was classified at the time. However, the State Department’s next release of emails, which is said to come today, will be the first that includes talk of top secret contents. In addition to the presidential race, there could be legal ramifications if the on-going probe uncovers any evidence that Clinton was in any way responsible for the transmission of sensitive material. Feds recover emails from Hillary Clinton’s private server

The FBI has recovered emails from the private server Hillary Clinton surrendered to the Justice Department back in August, according to Bloomberg . If you recall, Clinton admitted to deleting all her personal correspondences long ago but turned over copies of her work emails (around 30, 000 in number) to the government. You can even read thousands of them — mostly schedules, press clippings, speech notes and the like — on the State Department’s website. However, she decided to hand over her server anyway after the Intelligence Community Inspector General told Congress that some of the work emails she turned in could be classified as “top secret.” Now, the feds have managed to salvage those deleted digital missives, though it’s unclear if they were able to restore them all or just a few. Bloomberg says the FBI is now hard at work segregating the pile, separating truly personal ones ( e.g. Chelsea Clinton’s wedding details and yoga routines) from those that can still fall under the “work” category. The authorities’ investigation is expected to last a few more months, though, so it could take a while before we find out whether other top secret emails were among the deleted ones.
