Emulators have long been popular among gamers looking to relive the classic titles they enjoyed in their youth. Instead of playing Super Mario Bros. on a Nintendo console, one can go through the legally questionable yet widespread route of downloading a copy of the game and loading it with PC software that emulates the Nintendo Entertainment System. Emulation is typically limited to older games, as developing an emulator is hard work and must usually be run on hardware that’s more powerful than the original console. Consoles from the NES and Super NES era have working emulators, as do newer systems such as Nintendo 64, GameCube and Wii, and the first two PlayStations. While emulator development hit a dead end with the Xbox 360 and PS3, that may change with the Xbox One and PS4, which developers are already exploring as fertile ground for emulation. The Xbox 360 and PS4 feature x86 chips, for starters, and hardware-assisted virtualization can help solve some acceleration issues. But several significant obstacles stand in the way of developers already taking a crack at it, including console builders’ absolute refusal to see emulation as even remotely legal.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Scientists Uncover 3,700-Year-Old Wine Cellar

Taco Cowboy writes in with a link about the remnants of some well-aged wine recently uncovered in Israel. “Scientists have uncovered a 3, 700-year-old wine cellar in the ruins of a Canaanite palace in Israel, chemical analysis from the samples from the ceramic jars suggest they held a luxurious beverage that was evidently reserved for banquets. The good stuff contains a blend of ingredients that may have included honey, mint, cedar, tree resins and cinnamon bark. The discovery confirms how sophisticated wines were at that time, something suggested only by ancient texts. The wine cellar was found this summer in palace ruins near the modern town of Nahariya in northern Israel. Researchers found 40 ceramic jars, each big enough to hold about 13 gallons, in a single room. There may be more wine stored elsewhere, but the amount found so far wouldn’t be enough to supply the local population, which is why the researchers believe it was reserved for palace use. The unmarked jars are all similar as if made by the same potter, chemical analysis indicates that the jars held red wine and possibly white wine. There was no liquid left, analysis were done on residues removed from the jars. An expert in ancient winemaking said the discovery ‘sheds important new light’ on the development of winemaking in ancient Canaan, from which it later spread to Egypt and across the Mediterranean.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Coin, The Electronic Credit Card, Reaches Its Pre-Order Goal In 40 Minutes

We are, I believe, in an interstitial zone when it comes to payments. Credit cards are still king – just ask Square – and NFC is just a dream in most countries. That’s why Coin is so interesting. It’s a credit card-sized device that holds other credit cards, allowing you to swap from card to card and even store gift cards inside its ultra thin innards. The company planned a pre-order campaign that would top out at $50,000. They blew past that goal in forty minutes today, a testament to the desire for folks to leave their plastic at home. The card itself is as thin as a regular credit card. I saw the near-final prototype and except for a raised button and a small (slightly unreadable) LCD. To use the card you select a payment type with the button and just swipe. The Coin card “mimics” your read credit or gift card. The technology is tightly packed inside the card’s plastic case. The card uses low-power Bluetooth to connect to your iOS device that is coupled with a standard credit card reader. You swipe your cards into the system and you’re done. The device holds up to eight cards. Engineer Kanishk Parashar is leading the Y-Combinator-backed company alongside investor and board member Manu Kumar . Parashar cut his teeth in payments with a startup called SmartMarket but this product seems to be his winner. The company isn’t new – a company called Flint is already in this space and I suspect a bigger player will probably beat Coin to the mass market. However, it’s a cool idea in a cool package and, clearly, the idea has caught fire. You can take a look at the product here and it ships this Summer.

jeditobe writes with a link to a talk (video recorded, with transcript) about a project we’ve been posting about for years: ambitious Windows-replacement ReactOS: “In this talk, Alex Ionescu, lead kernel developer for the ReactOS project since 2004 (and recently returning after a long hiatus) will talk about the project’s current state, having just passed revision 60000 in the SVN repository. Alex will also cover some of the project’s goals, the development and testing methodology being such a massive undertaking (an open source project to reimplement all of Windows from scratch!), partnership with other open source projects (MinGW, Wine, Haiku, etc…). Alex will talk both about the infrastructure side about running such a massive OS project (but without Linux’s corporate resources), as well as the day-to-day development challenges of a highly distributed team and the lack of Win32 internals knowledge that makes it hard to recruit. astroengine writes “The first 1, 000 exoplanets to be confirmed have been added to the Europe-based Extrasolar Planets Encyclopaedia. For the last few weeks, astronomers (and the science media) have been waiting with bated breath as the confirmed exoplanet count tallied closer and closer to the 1, 000 mark. Then, with the help of the Super Wide Angle Search for Planets (SuperWASP) collaboration, the number jumped from 999 to 1, 010 overnight.
