cartechboy writes Self-driving cars are coming, that’s nothing new. People are somewhat nervous about this technology, and that’s also not news. But it appears self-driving cars are already hear, and one idiot was dumb enough to climb out of the driver’s seat while his car cruised down the highway. The car in question is a new Infiniti Q50 which has Active Lane Control and adaptive cruise control. Both of which essentially turn the Q50 into an autonomous vehicle while at highway speeds. While impressive, taking yourself out of a position where you can quickly and safely regain control of the car if needed is simply dumb. After watching the video, it’s abundantly clear why people should be nervous about autonomous vehicles. It’s not the cars and tech we need to worry about, it’s idiots like this guy. Tesla Aims For $30,000 Price, 2017 Launch For Model E

An anonymous reader writes The biggest complaint about Tesla Motors’ electric vehicles is that they’re far too expensive for the average motorist. The Roadster sold for $109, 000, and the Model S for $70, 000. Chris Porritt, the company’s VP of engineering, says their next model will aim for much broader availability. The compact Model E aims to be competitive with the Audi A4 and BMW 3-series, which both start in the low $30, 000 range. To reduce cost, the Model E won’t be built mostly with aluminum, like the Model S, and it will be roughly 20% smaller as well. The construction of the “Gigafactory” for battery production will also go a long way toward reducing the price. Tesla Makes Improvements To Model S

An anonymous reader writes “In a lull between product launches Tesla intends to keep making improvements to the Model S according to Elon Musk. Tesla will automatically push software to the Model S fleet that will help the car learn the driver’s habits and the navigation system will offer directions to avoid traffic jams. ‘This year, Tesla is offering only the single model, the Model S that is EPA rated at up to 265 miles on a single charge, the most of any electric car. The company’s next model won’t come until next year, when the delayed Model X crossover goes on sale. Musk says the holdup has centered on making sure its signature design element, gullwing doors to make it easier to get in the rear, works properly and is leak-proof. “Getting the door right is extremely difficult, ” he says.'” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Will Cameras Replace Sideview Mirrors On Cars In 2018?

cartechboy (2660665) writes “Just the other day we read about how the Department of Transportation will require all manufacturers to include rearview cameras on all new cars produced after May 1, 2018. But there’s something else auto manufacturers are pushing for, the ability to replace sideview mirrors with cameras in 2018. Tesla in particular is pushing for this to happen as traditional mirrors are bulky, and not very aerodynamic. That lump of plastic can cause surprising amounts of drag on an otherwise smooth car body. Camera units are much smaller and can be made streamlined, or even mounted nearly flush with the body, thus reducing aerodynamic drag. The idea has been around since the 1990s, and many concept cars have used cameras instead of sideview mirrors for years. But how will NHTSA respond? But what if your car could tell you the ideal speed to maintain to hit the next green light? That’s exactly what’s going to happen in the near future thanks to car-to-car technology. Many automakers are already working on this new tech, and Honda’s the latest to trial such systems. This is all part of what’s known as Universal Traffic Management System which will eventually provide feedback on car-to-car and infrastructure systems before they go into practical use. The system will also be able to tell the driver if a red light is likely to show before reaching an intersection so the driver can slow down, or notify the driver when that red light will turn green. All of this may seem like something that’s supposed to benefit the driver’s temper, but in reality it’s to help save fuel and lower emissions without any physical changes to the car.
