Backblaze Releases Billion-Hour Hard Drive Reliability Report

jones_supa writes: The storage services provider Backblaze has released its reliability report for Q1/2016 covering cumulative failure rates of mechanical hard disk drives by specific model numbers and by manufacturer. The company noted that as of this quarter, its 60, 000 drives have cumulatively spun for over one billion hours (100, 000 years). Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (HGST) is the clear leader here, with an annual failure rate of just 1% for three years running. The second position is also taken by a Japanese company: Toshiba. Third place goes to Western Digital (WD), with the company’s ratings having improved in the past year. Seagate comes out the worst, though it is suspected that much of that rating was warped by the company’s crash-happy 3 TB drive (ST3000DM001). Backblaze notes that 4 TB drives continue to be the sweet spot for building out its storage pods, but that it might move to 6, 8, or 10 TB drives as the price on the hardware comes down. The test took about four seconds, USA Today reported . The test of Hyperloop One’s propulsion system is just one step of many on the path to achieve a dream put forth by Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, who first drew up a plan to transport people at 760mph in low-pressure tubes in 2013. Musk decided not to pursue this business venture, which he called Hyperloop, but his whitepaper spawned two rival Hyperloop companies and an international student engineer competition . Hyperloop One, formerly known Hyperloop Technologies, announced its name change on Tuesday, hoping to differentiate itself from Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HTT), which has also made considerable headway in research and development of such a transportation system. HTT announced on Monday that it had exclusively licensed passive magnetic levitation technology that would serve to keep Hyperloop pods off the track, minimizing friction as they speed through a tube. The ‘Impossible’ EM Drive Being Tested By NASA May Finally Be Explained

MarkWhittington writes: The EmDrive, the so-called “impossible” space drive that uses no propellant, has roiled the aerospace world for the past several years ever since it was proposed by British aerospace engineer Robert Shawyer. In essence, the claim advanced by Shawyer and others is that if you bounced microwaves in a truncated cone, thrust would be produced out the open end. Most scientists have snorted at the idea, noting correctly that such a thing would violate physical laws. However, organizations as prestigious as NASA have replicated the same results, that prototypes of the EmDrive produces thrust. World’s largest coal mining firm declares bankruptcy

It won’t shock you to hear that the coal industry is facing tough times lately. Job cuts, mine closures and other signs of financial trouble are par for the course. However, that downturn just reached an important milestone: Peabody Energy, the world’s largest private coal mining company, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy across most of its US divisions. The firm says it didn’t have much choice between steep drops in the price of coal, a weak Chinese market, overproduction of shale gas and “regulatory challenges” (read: better environmental policies ). In plainer terms, people just aren’t as interested in coal energy as they were in years past. This isn’t the end for Peabody, let alone the industry. It’ll be business as usual while the company reorganizes, and this doesn’t include Peabody’s Australian (steelmaking-focused) business. As Bloomberg notes , developing regions like India and Southeast Asia still lean heavily on coal. Even in the US, where many are shifting toward renewable energy, about 28 percent of power comes from coal. Nonetheless, the bankruptcy shows just how far the coal business has fallen. While the industry has tried to remain relevant with “sustainable” practices (such as restoring land), it’s just not as desirable as it once was — especially not in a world where carbon emissions are becoming enemy number one . These SteamVR games will make or break virtual reality

In one month, the HTC Vive will be available for pre-order , giving consumers a chance to buy the first room-scale virtual reality system with full head and hand motion tracking. It sounds great, but what are you going to play with it? Valve knew you were going to ask that — which is why it hosted the SteamVR Developer Showcase in Seattle this week. In all, the company showcased twelve games that stood out as some of the best VR experiences Vive owners can have in 2016. Better still? There’s not a bad egg in the bunch — I’ve played all of them, and I already want to play all of them again. Believe or not, the fact that I can say that about Valve’s showcase is huge. Oculus’ Palmer Luckey once told me that the only thing that could kill virtual reality is bad virtual reality — and he’s right. The sense of presence one feels in consumer VR is so hard to articulate that the challenge of explaining it to new users has become something of an inside joke to the industry. Every developer I asked at the event told me the same thing: If you want a newbie to understand why VR matters you have to make them try it . If they do, and the experience is bad, they’ll write it off as a gimmick. That’s why events like the SteamVR developer showcase are so important: These are the first, best experiences consumers will have. These are the games that will make or break the virtual reality industry. Thank goodness they don’t suck. Part of what makes most of these SteamVR launch titles work is that there’s no learning curve . Thanks to Valve’s lighthouse laser tracking tech and the HTC Vive’s motion controller, interacting in VR is pretty much like living your normal life. If you want to go somewhere, you walk there. If you want to pick something up, you reach out and grab it — albeit by pulling a trigger on a controller rather than physically closing your hand. This makes everything feel easy and natural. When attack drones assault you with lasers in Space Pirate Trainer, you can avoid them by dodging and ducking. When Zombies charge you in Arizona Sunshine, defending yourself is just a matter of raising your arm (and the virtual gun it holds) and shooting. For the first time ever, you don’t need to learn how to manage swing-power meters to play a golf video game — in Cloudlands VR Minigolf you simply swing a club. If you’re a human alive today, you know how to play games in virtual reality. That said, there are still rules to learn. Yes, you can walk around in a real world space, which translates to in-game movement, but that space is limited by reality. How do you walk down a virtual hallway if your real-world couch is in the way? Games like Budget Cuts and The Gallery answer that with teleportation mechanics — moving the player’s physical walking space to a new point in the virtual world. For Budget Cuts , this manifests as an in-game portal gun, where The Gallery uses a simpler (and less narratively explained) fade-cut to the new location. There were abstract experiences too, like the omnipresent canvas of Tilt Brush . This painting program that lets you draw directly on the virtual air around you — but it’s still built upon the rules of a reality the player already understands. It’s not just the visual illusion of the HTC Vive’s headset that made these experiences feel real, it was the act moving, interacting and existing in a virtual world as you do a physical one. For now, that’s an HTC Vive exclusive experience. The Oculus Rift is launching with a focus on a seated experience, although most of the developers at SteamVR’s Developer Showcase did say they planned to port their games to the Rift after Oculus Touch launches later this year. We don’t even know how much the HTC Vive is going to cost , and it’s too early to say which consumer VR headset will reign supreme at the end of the year — but if you do go all in with SteamVR, at least you’ll know that there are a dozen top-tier experiences you can have. California lawmaker wants to ban phone encryption in 2017

California lawmaker, State Rep. Jim Cooper (D-Elk Grove), has introduced a bill that would effectively ban the sale of mobile devices that have encryption on by default beginning in 2017. The bill, AB 1681 , demands that any phone sold after January 1, 2017 be “capable of being decrypted and unlocked by its manufacturer or its operating system provider.” Should this bill become law, manufacturers found in violation would be subject to fines of $2, 500 per phone. Cooper’s reasoning puts a novel spin on the same, tired “The police can’t do their jobs unless tech companies do it for them” argument. This time, he used human trafficking as the boogeyman that needs defeating and which can only be accomplished if the government has unfettered, disk-level access to its citizens’ cell phones. “If you’re a bad guy [we] can get a search record for your bank, for your house, you can get a search warrant for just about anything, ” Cooper told ArsTechnica . “For the industry to say it’s privacy, it really doesn’t hold any water. We’re going after human traffickers and people who are doing bad and evil things. But not just any car show—the focus is on how technology is transforming the car, and nowhere is that more evident than in autonomous driving. The goal is to get to “level four”—the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s highest level of self-driving vehicle, capable of getting from point A to point B without any human driver intervention. We’re not there yet—no one in the industry Ars has spoken to recently thinks the tech challenges are quite solved yet—but research vehicles from companies like Google , Delphi , Audi , and Ford are testing out the hardware and software necessary to get us to that point. 950 Pro review: Samsung’s first PCIe M.2 NVMe SSD is an absolute monster

(credit: Orestis Bastounis) The 950 Pro isn’t Samsung’s first consumer M.2 SSD, or even the company’s first PCIe M.2 drive. It is, however, Samsung’s first consumer M.2 and NVMe drive that uses the full performance of four PCIe 3.0 lanes. It is also an upgrade from its predecessor the SM951, in that it uses 3D V-NAND rather than planar NAND. Somewhat disappointingly, the 950 Pro comes in only two capacities for now: 256GB or 512GB, with a 1TB model promised for next year. Samsung is resolute in only producing single-sided M.2 devices to keep the drive’s thickness to a minimum, so the 1TB drive will have to wait until 48-layer 3rd-generation V-NAND is available. Thankfully, no 128GB model will be sold, indicating that 128GB SSDs may be on their way out. UK pricing is pegged at £150 for the 256GB model and £270 for 512GB; in the US, it’s $200 and $350, respectively. As always, expect some variation between retailers with these prices, and in these early days, prices may be slightly higher than what Samsung is quoting.
