Amazon Japan has an unusual challenge with the Kindle: it not only has to cater to your typical bookworm, but to a local fondness for image-heavy (and thus storage-intensive) manga books . What it’s going to do? Release a special model just for those readers, apparently. The company has introduced a manga version of the Kindle Paperwhite with 32GB of storage, or eight times as much space as the run-of-the-mill 4GB model. You could cram every single volume of Asari-chan , Kochikame and Naruto into this e-reader, Amazon says. On top of that, a 33 percent faster page turning speed promises to keep you engrossed in your comics. The manga Kindle is available for pre-order now, with pricing commanding a slight premium over the usual Paperwhite. You’re spending ¥16, 280 (about $157), or ¥12, 280 ($118) if you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber. The first units ship October 21st, and the update to improve page turning performance should arrive by the end of the month. As you might gather, it’s not very likely that you’ll see this model elsewhere in the world — when the 4GB in regular Kindles is enough to hold thousands of regular books, Amazon doesn’t have much incentive to boost their capacity any time soon. Amazon’s new Prime Reading gives Prime members all they can read
If you’re thinking about buying a Kindle Voyage, you probably should hold off. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos just tweeted this morning that the company is ready to release an “all-new, top of the line” Kindle next week. Presumably, that’ll be a replacement for the aging but still powerful Kindle Voyage , which was released back in the fall of 2014. It’s still an excellent e-reader (albeit an expensive one at $200), but the mid-range Kindle Paperwhite has since adopted its high-resolution screen at a much lower price. Heads up readers – all-new, top of the line Kindle almost ready. 8th generation. Details next week. — Jeff Bezos (@JeffBezos) April 4, 2016 The Voyage is still slightly smaller and lighter than the Paperwhite; it also features a screen with adaptive lighting technology and has pressure-sensitive page turn buttons. But for most readers, the cheaper Paperwhite is the better buy. We’ll see what Amazon has to differentiate its new e-reader from the Voyage next week, but as for now Bezos isn’t dropping any other details. It’s also worth noting that this is a pretty strange way to drop some news — most new device launches are obviously shrouded in secrecy. Bezos’ transparency around this implies that it’s not that big of a deal, despite his “all-new” proclamation. And e-readers aren’t exactly hotly anticipated gadgets at this point; Amazon got the formula right with the Kindle and continues to dominate the market with it. Amazon is testing an ebook rental service called “Kindle Unlimited.” The e-commerce company put up test pages for the service, which will offer “unlimited access to 600, 000 titles.” Users would pay $9.99 a month for access to the extensive online lending library.
