400 Million Chinese Cannot Speak Mandarin

dryriver writes with this excerpt from a thought-provoking report at the BBC: “China’s Education Ministry says that about 400 million people — or 30% of the population — cannot speak the country’s national language. Of the 70% of the population who can speak Mandarin, many do not do it well enough, a ministry spokeswoman told Xinhua news agency on Thursday. The admission from officials came as the government launched another push for linguistic unity in China. China is home to thousands of dialects and several minority languages. These include Cantonese and Hokkien, which enjoy strong regional support. Mandarin — formally called Putonghua in China, meaning ‘common tongue’ — is one of the most widely-spoken languages in the world. Austrian Professor Creates Kindle E-Book Copier With Lego Mindstorms

An anonymous reader writes “Using a Lego Mindstorms set, a Mac, and optical character recognition, Austrian professor Peter Purgathofer created a makeshift ebook copier. From the article: ‘It’s sort of a combination of high tech meets low. The scanning is done by way of the Mac’s iSight camera. The Mindstorms set does two things: Hits the page-advance button on the Kindle (it appears to be an older model, like the one in the picture above), then mashes the space bar on the Mac, causing it to take a picture.’ Purgathofer calls the creation a ‘reflection on the loss of long established rights.’ Check out the Vimeo video for a demonstration.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

US Intercepts Iranian Order For Attack On US Embassy In Iraq

The Wall Street Journal reports, ‘The U.S. has intercepted an order from Iran to militants in Iraq to attack the U.S. Embassy and other American interests in Baghdad in the event of a strike on Syria … U.S. officials said they are on alert for Iran’s fleet of small, fast boats in the Persian Gulf … U.S. officials also fear Hezbollah could attack the U.S. Embassy in Beirut. While the U.S. has moved military resources in the region for a possible strike, it has other assets in the area that would be ready to respond to any reprisals by Syria, Iran or its allies. … Israel has so far been the focus of concerns about retaliation from Iran and its Lebanese militant ally Hezbollah. The commander-in-chief of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard Corps said last week that an attack on Syria would lead to the “destruction of Israel.” … The Iranian message, intercepted in recent days, came from Qasem Soleimani, the head of Revolutionary Guards’ Qods Force, and went to Iranian-supported Shiite militia groups in Iraq, according to U.S. officials.’ What’s interesting is this Washington Post story from 2011: Iran’s Quds Force was blamed for attacks on U.S. troops in Iraq.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Beeftopia writes “Researchers discovered that inserting gut bacteria from obese people into mice without gut bacteria led to the mice becoming obese. Gut bacteria from slim people inserted into the same mice did not lead to mouse obesity. Parallels Update Installs Unrelated Daemon Without Permission

Calibax writes “Parallels recently released version 9 of Parallels Desktop, their popular hypervisor application for Mac. They also released a new product named Parallels Access that offers access to Windows applications from an iPad for $80 per year. Access has received less than stellar reviews. When a user upgrades Parallels Desktop, he is asked if he wants a free six-month subscription to Parallels Access. Even if he says no, the product is installed on his system and the application is started each time the system is rebooted. It is installed with ancillary files scattered around several directories in the system and Parallels has not supplied an uninstaller or listed the steps to fully uninstall the application, despite a number of requests. In other words, Parallels has decided it’s a good idea to silently install a difficult to remove daemon application on the system, even if the user has explicitly stated they do not want it. They have not provided an uninstaller or a list of files installed or instructions on how to remove the application files. Users and moderators are posting messages asking Yahoo to go back to the old format. Yahoo is responding with a vanilla ‘thank you for your feedback we are working to make it better’ comment. Sleep Found To Replenish a Type of Brain Cell

A new study (abstract) explains one very good reason why at least seven hours of sleep a night is necessary. Quoting the BBC: ‘Sleep ramps up the production of cells that go on to make an insulating material known as myelin which protects our brain’s circuitry. … The increase was most marked during the type of sleep that is associated with dreaming – REM or rapid eye movement sleep — and was driven by genes. Intel Launches Core I7-4960X Flagship CPU

MojoKid writes “Low-power parts for hand-held devices may be all the rage right now, but today Intel is taking the wraps off a new high-end desktop processor with the official unveiling of its Ivy Bridge-E microarchitecture. The Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition processor is the flagship product in Intel’s initial line-up of Ivy Bridge-E based CPUs. The chip is manufactured using Intel’s 22nm process node and features roughly 1.86 billion transistors, with a die size of approximately 257mm square. That’s about 410 million fewer transistors and a 41 percent smaller die than Intel’s previous gen Sandy Bridge-E CPU. The Ivy Bridge-E microarchitecture features up to 6 active execution cores that can each process two threads simultaneously, for support of a total of 12 threads, and they’re designed for Intel’s LGA 2011 socket. Intel’s Core i7-4960X Extreme Edition processor has a base clock frequency of 3.6GHz with a maximum Turbo frequency of 4GHz. It is easily the fastest desktop processor Intel has released to date when tasked with highly-threaded workloads or when its massive amount of cache comes into play in applications like 3D rendering, ray tracing, and gaming. Apple Now Relaying All FaceTime Calls Due To Lost Patent Dispute

Em Adespoton writes “Before the VirnetX case, nearly all FaceTime calls were done through a system of direct communication. Essentially, Apple would verify that both parties had valid FaceTime accounts and then allow their two devices to speak directly to each other over the Internet, without any intermediary or ‘relay’ servers. However, a small number of calls—5 to 10 percent, according to an Apple engineer who testified at trial—were routed through ‘relay servers.’ At the August 15 hearing, a VirnetX lawyer stated that Apple had logged ‘over half a million calls’ complaining about the quality of FaceTime [since disabling direct connections].” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

They presented their paper, ‘Looking inside the (Drop) box’ (PDF) at USENIX 2013, explaining step-by-step how they were able to succeed where others failed in reverse-engineering a heavily obfuscated application written in Python.
