Tattoo artist with missing arm wears tattoo machine prosthesis

Lyon, France-based tattoo artist JC Sheitan Tenet has no right arm. In place of his right hand, he wears custom tattoo machine prostheses he developed with biomechanical sculptor Jean-Louis Gonzal. Silkworms eat nanotubes, spin super-silk

Nanoengineer engineers at Tsinghua University fed silkworms carbon nanotubes or graphene, both of which are approximately 100 times stronger than steel. The silkworms then spun reinforced silk that, according to Chemical & Engineering News , “twice as tough (as regular silk) and can withstand at least 50% higher stress before breaking.” The modified silks conduct electricity, unlike regular silk. Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy imaging showed that the carbon-enhanced silk fibers had a more ordered crystal structure due to the incorporated nano materials. Some questions remain. One is exactly how the silkworms incorporate the nanomaterials in their silk. Another is what percentage of the nanomaterials eaten by the worms make it into the silk instead of being excreted or otherwise metabolized. ” Feeding Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes or Graphene to Silkworms for Reinforced Silk Fibers ” (Nano Letters)

Beautiful video inside a zebrafish embryo brain

Researchers borrowed optical techniques from astronomy and ophthalmology to dramatically improve imaging of biological samples. This video, created by scientists at the HHMI Janelia Farm Research Campus, shows neurons in the brain of a living zebrafish embryo. You can see the difference in quality when their new technique of “adaptive optics” is switched on and off. According to physicist/engineer Eric Betzig who led the research, “The results are pretty eye-popping.” Yes. Yes they are. ( HHMI News , via National Geographic )

Google Maps image of boy’s dead body to be removed

Google Maps is replacing a satellite image that shows the body of Kevin Barrera, a 14-year-old who was murdered in 2009 in Richmond, California. The boy’s father, Jose Barrera, apparently found out about the picture just a few days ago, commenting “When I see this image, that’s still like that happened yesterday.” Google says it will take eight days to swap it out. “Google has never accelerated the replacement of updated satellite imagery from our maps before, but given the circumstances we wanted to make an exception in this case,” Google Maps VP Brian McClendon told the San Francisco Chronicle. I don’t care to reproduce the sad image here, but the San Francisco Chronicle did. ” Google to fix map image showing slain boy ” (SF Chronicle)
