Intel’s NUC mini-PC internals exposed, available for around $300 in early December

Intel’s Next Unit of Computing (NUC) is just about ready for store shelves, and Anandtech managed to get their hands on the DC3217BY model to provide us an early inside look at the mini-PC. Clearly aimed at enthusiasts, the motherboard and 4 x 4-inch chassis are all you get out of the box; you’ll have to get the memory, the mini PCIe cards and even the power cord separately. Luckily installation looks quite easy — only four screws hold the chassis and motherboard together. The bottom mini PCIe slot accommodates half height cards (for WiFi, presumably) and you can go ahead and put an mSATA drive or full height card at the top. As we saw in our IDF hands-on , the NUC holds a Core i3 CPU, HD 4000 graphics, two SoDIMM sockets, mSATA and mini-PCIe interfaces, one to two HDMI and three USB 2.0 connectors. The DC3217BY eschews Gigabit Ethernet (which is available on the DC3217IYE) in favor of a Thunderbolt port. While we initially thought the NUC would go for somewhere around $400 , it turns out it’ll cost $300 to $320 and will be available from Amazon and Eggdrop in early December. Urine-powered generator produces six hours of electricity per bathroom break

We’ve all heard the expression “haste makes waste,” but how about waste making energy? At the fourth annual Maker Faire Africa in Lagos, Nigeria, a quartet of teenage girls ages 14 through 15 have created a urine-powered generator. This eco-friendly energy source cranks out six hours of electricity for every liter of human bodily fluid by separating the excretion’s hydrogen with an electrolytic cell. While this method of human waste disposal seems promising, the device has the potential to be a pee-powered biobomb and will need more than its limited safety measures before you’re able to pick one up at your local hardware store. However, if this can help us save a few bucks on our energy bill, then we need to introduce these girls to these guys posthaste. Cray has just fired a nuclear salvo in the supercomputer wars with the launch of its XC30, a 100 petaflop-capable brute that can scale up to one million cores. Developed in conjunction with DARPA , the Cascade -codenamed system uses a new type of architecture called Aries interconnect and Intel Xeon E5-2600 processors to easily leapfrog its recent Titan sibling, the previous speed champ. That puts Cray well ahead of rivals like China’s Tianhe-2 , and the company will aim to keep that edge by supercharging future versions with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors and NVIDIA Tesla GPUs . High-end research centers have placed $100 million worth of orders so far (though oddly, DARPA isn’t one of them yet), and units are already shipping in limited numbers — likely by the eighteen-wheeler-full, from the looks of it. Potentially inhabitable super-Earth discovered in 6 planet solar system

When we do eventually reduce the Earth to an uninhabitable wasteland through our careless consumption of natural resources and inevitable nuclear wars, we’ll need someplace else to go. We haven’t picked a successor yet, but a new candidate has been identified a mere 44 light years away, orbiting dwarf star HD 40307. The super-Earth orbits its host star right at the edge of the so-called habitable zone , where a stable atmosphere and liquid water are possible. We don’t know for sure the planet is, in fact, capable of supporting life, but there’s at least a chance. And given that it’s roughly seven-times the mass of Earth, it shouldn’t have much trouble playing host to our exploding population. LG’s 29-inch EA93 is the world’s first 21:9 ultrawidescreen monitor, launches this month in Korea

While ” ultrawidescreen ” 21:9 aspect ratio HDTVs haven’t taken off despite several attempts, LG is bringing the formfactor to the desktop with its new EA93 UltraWide LCD monitor. Measuring at 29-inches with a resolution of 2,560 x 1,080, it uses the extra horizontal space to display not just cinema-style movies, but also side by side video from different sources or up to four different views at once thanks to its built-in software. For connections, it has DVI Dual Link, DisplayPort, or HDMI with MHL support. We got an eyeful of the monitor at IFA earlier this year and you can check out our hands-on video after the break, or take a quick Korean vacation to snag one for 690,000 won ($633) before they go on sale everywhere else later in the year — pricing elsewhere has not yet been announced. AT&T to spend $14 billion over the next three years on broadband, wireless infrastructure

AT&T has announced that it will be dropping a cool $14 billion over the next three years or so to beef up its wireless and wireline broadband networks. Project Velocity IP (VIP) will see the company boost its 4G LTE network to 300 million users by year-end 2014 and expand its wired IP broadband base to 75 percent of customer locations by the end of 2015. In addition, the operator intends to have fiber deployed to a million business locations and plans to expand U-verse by 8.5 million users to 33 million customer locations. It predicts that 99 percent of customers will get broadband services either through terrestrial IP or wireless 4G LTE when it’s all said and done. $8 billion will go toward wireless projects, while $6 billion will help goose up wired broadband — so, nobody can say the telecom giant is hoarding all those profits . NVIDIA gets a little help from Valve, tweaks GeForce drivers just as Steam for Linux beta launches

NVIDIA and Linux haven’t always been the most welcoming of bedfellows, but Valve seems to be defrosting that relationship somewhat. The Half Life maker has helped NVIDIA to tweak its 600 series GeForce drivers to reduce games’ loading times when used on Linus’ operating system . The R310 drivers are said to double performance when using Steam for Linux , which openes for beta today, meaning that you can try and survive twice as many zombie apocalypses in Left 4 Dead than you could a week ago. Japan Display shows low-power reflective LCD that does color, video

Seen any color video in your e-reader lately? Us neither, and Japan Display wants to change all that with a new reflective , paper type LCD capable of the feat that burns very little juice, to boot. To pull it off, the prototype uses a so-called light control layer, allowing it to collect rays and bounce them toward your eyes, exactly like plain old analog paper. The consortium developed a low color fidelity version with five percent NTSC coverage and a bright 40 percent reflection, along with a dimmer version carrying a third less reflectivity but a more faithful 36 percent hue gamut. The latter still needs some tweaking, according to Japan Display, but the more reflective version is now good to go for production, meaning it might start popping up in new readers imminently. LogMeIn’s Cubby cloud storage service enters ‘Open Beta’ phase, welcomes new signups

It’s been quite a few months since LogMeIn decided to explore the relatively crowded cloud-based storage space, but after months of existing as a private beta only, today the company’s Cubby is finally reaching a more open stage. Essentially, this novel “Open Beta” will allow new folks to see what the fresh service is all about — which includes 5GB of free storage space (up to 20GB more if you introduce people to the interestingly-named offering) and what Cubby’s calling its “signature” DirectSync feature, one that allows for unlimited file syncing across Mac and PCs. Needless to say, with services like Dropbox, Box and Google Drive having been around for some time now, LogMeIn’s Cubby certainly has its work cut out for it — that said, it never hurts to have one too many options. Tesla reports great Q3 results, expects to be cash flow positive by Q4

Tesla’s shares are up 3.9 percent to $30.04 on Monday due to Q3 results that point to better things ahead for the Californian EV maker. The company recently reported revenues of $50 million for the third quarter alone, and is well on track to hit its target of $400 to $440 million by year’s end. In a letter to shareholders, Tesla credits production increase for the success, stating that it “successfully transitioned to a mass production car company, growing from manufacturing 5 cars per week at the beginning of the quarter to 100 cars per week by the end.” Indeed, it apparently delivered almost 350 Model S cars in Q3, and expects about 2,500 to 3,000 more of the shiny electric sedans to be sold in Q4, putting the company squarely in the black. We’re not sure if its newly launched Supercharger network has anything to do with the recent uptick in sales, but hopefully this means it’ll be able to pay off that DOE loan soon.
