Human Rights Watch: Petition Against Robots On the Battle Field

First time accepted submitter KublaCant writes “‘At this very moment, researchers around the world – including in the United States – are working to develop fully autonomous war machines: killer robots. This is not science fiction. It is a real and powerful threat to humanity.’ These are the first words of a Human Rights Watch Petition to Presdient Obama to keep robots from the battlefield. The argument is that robots possess neither common sense, ‘real’ reason, any sense of mercy nor — most important — the option to not obey illegal commands. What with the fast-spreading use of drones et al. , we are allegedly a long way off from Asimov’s famous Three Laws of Robotics being implanted in autonomous fighting machines, or into any ( semi- ) autonomous robot. A ‘Stop the Killer Robots’ campaign will also be launched in April at the British House of Commons and includes many of the groups that successfully campaigned to have international action taken against cluster bombs and landmines. They hope to get a similar global treaty against autonomous weapons. The Guardian has more about this, including quotes from well-known robotics researcher Noel Sharkey from Sheffield University.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

FCC Proposal Would Cover the US With Public Wi-Fi

pigrabbitbear writes “Internet access is an essential need on par with education access, but at what point do regulators recognize that? When will government officials acknowledge that widespread, guaranteed access is essential to fostering growth in the country? Somewhat surprisingly, that time is now, as the FCC is now calling for nationwide free wi-fi networks to be opened up to the public. The FCC proposes buying back spectrum from TV stations that would allow for what the Washington Post is dubbing ‘super wi-fi,’ as the commission wants to cover the country with wide-ranging, highly-penetrative networks. Essentially, you can imagine the proposal as covering a majority of the country with open-access data networks, similar to cell networks now, that your car, tablet, or even phone could connect to. That means no one is ever disconnected, and some folks – especially light users and the poor – could likely ditch regular Internet and cell plans altogether.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

These natural formations look like alien ruins

These columns are found in Varna, Bulgaria. They’re hollowed out and filled with sand, almost perfectly round, and grouped together. And they’re 100 percent natural formations. Sometimes even prehistory is in on the conspiracy to make us believe that we’ve discovered evidence of alien visitors. More »

The New Backbone of International Trade Is the Single Biggest Movable Thing We’ve Ever Built

You won’t have any trouble finding this Marco Polo in the pool—even with your eyes closed. Five Airbus a380s lined up nose-to-tail still wouldn’t match the length, much less the overwhelming mass, of the world’s largest container ship. More »

Arnold Schwarzenegger: Great Darth Vader or the Greatest Darth Vader?

No offense to James Earl Jones, but I can’t imagine how anybody could watch the above video of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s little known tryout in the role of Darth Vader, and not see he makes the superior Sith Lord. I mean, it’s not even close. Come on, George. You know you have one more Special Edition left in you before you go. Tell you what — you include this vocal track, and I’ll forgive you for inserting Jar Jar into all the Dagobah scenes, or whatever other nonsense you had planned before we fanboys drove you screaming into retirement.
