NVIDIA Releases JTX1 ARM Board That Competes With Intel’s Skylake i7-6700K

An anonymous reader writes: NVIDIA has unveiled the Jetson TX1 development board powered by their Tegra X1 SoC. The Jetson TX1 has a Maxwell GPU capable of 1 TFLOP/s, four 64-bit ARM A57 processors, 4GB of RAM, and 16GB of onboard storage. NVIDIA isn’t yet allowing media to publish benchmarks, but the company’s reported figures show the graphics and deep learning performance to be comparable to an Intel Core i7-6700K while scoring multiple times better on performance-per-Watt. Add / Remove Police forces are often overstretched and have to balance neighborhood patrols with emergency situations and ongoing investigations. Now, officers of Peterborough in the UK are trialling a Skype service that enables members of the public to speak to the police remotely through video chat, rather than arranging a home visit, which can be very time consuming. The service will be offered to those who dial 101 rather than the emergency number 999. It provides another communication option for victims of crimes and exists alongside other emergency response procedures. Police officers will still visit people’s homes if that is necessary, but it is hoped the Skype option will improve response times and enhance communication between law enforcement and the public. Telephone and Skype appointments will provide flexibility for victims, with appointments available seven days a week from 8am-10pm. The initiative echoes similar movements in the health service, which enable patients access to health professionals via Skype and telemedicine platforms. Fluorescent dressing glows to detect infections

Add / Remove There’s a huge demand for engineering materials that detect dangerous substances invisible to the naked eye, such as these gloves that change color in the presence of hazardous substances. Similarly, researchers at the University of Bath have been developing a material to detect potentially deadly bacteria on open wounds. Using a hydrogel containing fluorescent dye, the prototype wound-dressing glows in the presence of bacterial ‘biofilms’ — a state bacteria exist in that’s difficult for drugs to penetrate. Treating open wounds can be complicated by the presence of certain bacteria, which can lead to infections, prolonging treatment and making the situation potentially fatal. These infections can currently only be detected after they’ve taken hold, so standard medical practice requires removing and replacing the dressing, leading to patient distress. This new solution is capable of detecting a number of infectious bacterial species, and organisms normally present on human skin don’t trigger the color change. Whilst a long way from the clinical trial stage, the wound dressing shows that early detection of invisible infections is possible. Proof-of-Concept Ransomware Affects Macs

sarahnaomi writes: Ransomware, the devilish family of malware that locks down a victim’s files until he or she coughs up a hefty bounty, may soon be coming to Mac. Last week, a Brazilian security researcher produced a proof-of-concept for what appears to be the first ransomware to target Mac operating systems (Mac OS X). On Monday, cybersecurity company Symantec verified the researcher’s findings. “Mabouia is the first case of file-based crypto ransomware for OS X, albeit a proof-of-concept, ” Symantec wrote in a blog post. “It’s simple code, I did it in two days, ” [said] the creator of the malware. Every year about four million newborns in the U.S. get a heel prick at birth, to screen for congenital disorders, that if found early enough, can save their life.” However, when those tests are done, the leftover blood isn’t simply thrown away. Instead, they’re taken to an office building and the DNA data is stored in a database. “It’s a treasure trove of information about you, from the color of your eyes and hair to your pre-disposition to diseases like Alzheimer’s and cancer.” And that’s not the end of it: “The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is not the only agency using the blood spots. Chrome to end support for Windows XP, Vista, and OS X 10.8 on April 2016

If you’re on an older operating system, your Chrome could stop getting updates in just a few months. Google’s official Chrome Blog announced it will be ending support for Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Mac OS X 10.6, 10.7, and 10.8 in April 2016. Browsers on those operating systems will continue to work, but they will stop getting updates from Google. For Windows XP, this is yet another stay of execution from Google, mirroring Microsoft’s continually extended support for the OS that just won’t die. Chrome support for XP was originally stated to end along with Microsoft’s in April 2014. Google then extended that to ” at least April 2015 ,” then all of 2015 , and now it’s going to hang around for the next five months. On the Mac side of things, Apple usually supports its three newest operating systems. So official support for 10.8 ended when 10.11 El Capitan was released, and 10.6 and 10.7 have long been put to rest by Apple. Read 2 remaining paragraphs | Comments

MIT Media Lab’s Wearable, Interactive Snakebot Experiments

It’s often said that “Children are our future, ” but that phrase never mentions robot snakes. There are enough people working on robot snakes that “Robot snakes are our future” sounds more relevant. Carnegie Mellon snakebot OC Robotics snakebot Tesla snakebot The latest in Robot Snake News comes to us from MIT Media Lab’s Tangible Media Group , whom we naively gave a Core77 Design Award to in 2014, not realizing that they would turn their attention towards controlling us with robot snakes. It is too late for us to take the award back, so we may as well look at what they’re working on. First off, the research team behind the LineFORM project have sneakily changed the word “snake” to “line” to throw us off the trail. Here’s their description: We propose a novel Shape Changing Interface which has the form of a “Line”. Lines have several interesting characteristics from the perspective of interaction design: abstractness of data representation; a variety of inherent interactions / affordances; and constraints as boundaries or borderlines. By utilising such aspects of lines together with the added capability of shape-shifting, we present various applications in different scenarios such as shape changing cords, mobiles, body constraints, and data manipulation to investigate the design space of line-based shape changing interfaces. The word substitution is understandable, because the paragraph is more frightening when you read it with the word “snake” where it’s supposed to be. (Try it.) In any case, they’ve come up with some novel applications: LineFORM from Tangible Media Group on Vimeo. Notice that even the developer himself looks terrified when picking up the “phone.” You don’t have to be an expert in body language to understand that he’s wondering if it’s going to wrap itself around his neck, or grab his glasses off of his face and snap them in displeasure. My robophobia aside, I do think the lamp bit was neat, and I imagine that if tamed the monster could create a useful work lamp in a tough-to-reach spot. I also dug the “expressive cord” bit revealing data transfer, and I’d like to see more—for example, when your external hard drive is full, I’d like to see a mouse-sized lump travel down the cord, cause a choke, then have to travel back into your computer. The project’s full name, by the way, is ” LineFORM: Actuated Curve Interfaces for Display, Interaction, and Constraint ” [PDF]. Again, there’s nothing in there about snakes, robots, or children.

$635 poop pills cure deadly gastrointestinal infection

(credit: Ana C./ Flickr ) The country’s first stool bank , OpenBiome, is now selling capsules of fecal matter to treat life-threatening Clostridium difficile , or C. diff, infections. The $635 pill-based therapy, a type of fecal transplant, is highly effective against the difficult-to-treat gastrointestinal infection, according to results of a pilot study. A single dose, which includes a whopping 30 pills, cured 70 percent of patients. A second dose bumped the success rate up to 94 percent. The treatment, currently being sold only to doctors, may offer an easier alternative to other effective fecal transplant routes, namely  colonoscopies, nasal tubes, and enemas . Scientists have known for years that fecal transplants in general are highly effective against C. diff infections, which can be extremely difficult to cure. The infection can cause severe, recurring diarrhea. It can be resistant to antibiotic treatments, and sometimes it turns deadly.
