Quentin Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful Eight’ will premiere in 70mm film

It’s no secret that Quentin Tarantino prefers film over digital , and he’s underscoring that point with the planned debut of The Hateful Eight . The director kicked off a San Diego Comic-Con panel with a video revealing that his Western was not only shot on giant 65mm film, but will screen in 70mm film before any other format. This will be a roadshow-style release where 100 theaters will put on a special show that might even recall the golden era of film, with overtures and intermissions. It’ll expand to other formats after two weeks. As for why Tarantino didn’t go with smaller film stock? He argues that 70mm is good not just for dramatic outdoor vistas, but also for indoor scenes. It makes them “more intimate [and] more vital, ” which is important when The Hateful Eight is mostly set in one building in Wyoming. Tarantino adds that he also saw 70mm as a bargaining chip that would keep his movie on film. “I figured if I shoot in 70, they’ll have to release it in 70, ” he says. Not that he’s completely averse to joining the modern era. At the Comic-Con panel, he explained that he saw digital projection as ” HBO in public .” If he eventually has no choice but to shoot in a TV-like digital medium, he might as well cut the middleman and produce for TV. It’s just as well, he adds — this would give him an opportunity to shoot larger stories instead of cutting things down for the movie theater. There’s no indication that Tarantino is about to make a career switch (he notes that any talk of him calling it quits is premature), but you now know where he’d go if celluloid went away . Amnesty International Seeks Explanation For ‘Absolutely Shocking’ Surveillance

Mark Wilson writes: A court recently revealed via email that the UK government had been spying on Amnesty International. GCHQ had put Amnesty under surveillance — despite this having previously been denied — and now the human rights organization wants answers. In a letter to the UK Prime Minister David Cameron, Amnesty International asks for an explanation for the surveillance. The Investigatory Powers Tribunal’s (IPT) email made it clear that GCHQ had been intercepting, accessing and storing communications, something that Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Salil Shetty believes ‘makes it vividly clear that mass surveillance has gone too far’. New Letters Added To the Genetic Alphabet

An anonymous reader writes with this excerpt from Quanta Magazine: [A]fter decades of work, [organic chemist Steven] Benner’s team has synthesized artificially enhanced DNA that functions much like ordinary DNA, if not better. In two papers published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society last month, the researchers have shown that two synthetic nucleotides called P and Z fit seamlessly into DNA’s helical structure, maintaining the natural shape of DNA. Moreover, DNA sequences incorporating these letters can evolve just like traditional DNA, a first for an expanded genetic alphabet. In fact, the article continues, these new nucleotides can actually outperform their natural counterparts: “When challenged to evolve a segment that selectively binds to cancer cells, DNA sequences using P and Z did better than those without.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Breaking: Ellen Pao steps down as reddit CEO

Embattled reddit CEO Ellen Pao has stepped down from her position at the privately held company, effectively immediately. A spokesperson for reddit indicated that the separation was mutually agreed upon and that Pao will be replaced by original reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman. According to the New York Times,  Pao will continue to advise reddit’s board until the end of the year. In an interview with Re/code’s Kara Swisher, Pao is quoted as saying that her departure stems from a disagreement with reddit’s board of directors on the direction reddit should go. “They had a more aggressive view than I did,” said Pao. The move comes one week after a massive user-led protest left large swaths of the site inaccessible to the public. The protest was sparked by the firing of Victoria Taylor , a reddit employee who facilitated the site’s “Ask Me Anything” question-and-answer chats (called “AMAs”). Volunteer moderators of the /r/IAmA subreddit took the discussion area offline to try to figure out a way forward without Taylor’s help, characterizing Taylor’s dismissal as the latest in a long string of poorly communicated moves by reddit’s administrators. Other subreddit moderators quickly followed suit in a show of solidarity, and by last Thursday evening, one-third of the site’s “default” subreddits were inaccessible.
