Sharp Developing LCD Screens In Almost Any Shape

jfruh writes: Traditional LCD panels are rectangular because the tiny chips that drive each pixel of the display are fitted along the edge of the glass panel on which the screen is made. But in a new breed of screens from Sharp, the chips are embedded between the pixels so that means a lot more freedom in screen shape: only one edge of the screen needs to be a straight line, which could give rise to a host of new applications. GitHub’s free student bundle gets you started on writing code

It’s harder to score student discounts on programming tools now that many of them are subscription services, but GitHub has just launched a bundle that could make it far less expensive to get cracking. Its new Student Developer Pack gives you free access to the kind of tools you’d typically need to get a serious coding project off the ground, including the Unreal game engine , cloud hosting and GitHub’s own code repository service. How much you get for free varies. Some partners simply offer credit, while others will give you a subscription — in a few cases, for as long as you’re still a student. The hope is that you’ll like the tools enough to pay for them later, of course, but it’s hard to knock an offer that leaves you with fewer school-related bills. What we know (and suspect) is coming in iOS 8.1

Apple Pay is one of the biggest features expected to launch with iOS 8.1 later this month. Apple Last week, numerous publications ( including Ars ) reported seeing references to iOS 8.1, 8.2, and 8.3 in their site analytics pages. iOS versions 5, 6, and 7 only saw one major point update apiece during their respective lifespans, so evidence of three different updates being tested simultaneously just weeks after the release of iOS 8.0  came as a surprise. It looks like we’ll be seeing the first of those updates sooner rather than later. Today Apple pushed out the second beta build of iOS 8.1 in as many weeks to its registered developers, and the final version of the software is rumored to be released at or near Apple’s event later this month . Obviously such a quick turnaround time will make iOS 8.1 a smaller update than iOS 7.1 , which gestated for around six months and fixed a host of problems when finally released. If Volvo has its way, truck accidents could be on the way out. The automaker is working on system for the haulers to help drivers avoid wrecks, aiming to combat low visibility as one of the primary causes of wrecks. In order to keep an eye on things, the company is developing tech that continuously monitors surroundings with a 360-degree scan. A smattering of sensors, radar and cameras are placed around the truck to boost safety — especially in urban areas full of pedestrians and cyclists . Once the data is collected, the system interprets the details to communicate warnings, and it can even take control of steering and braking if the driving doesn’t respond in time. Belkin Router Owners Suffering Massive Outages

An anonymous reader writes: ISPs around the country are being kept busy today answering calls from frustrated customers with Belkin routers. Overnight, a firmware issue left many of the Belkin devices with no access to the customer’s broadband connection. Initial speculation was that a faulty firmware upgrade caused the devices to lose connectivity, but even users with automatic updates disabled are running into trouble. The problem seems to be that the routers “occasionally ping heartbeat.belkin.com to detect network connectivity, ” but are suddenly unable to get a response. Belkin has acknowledged the issue and posted a workaround while they work on a fix. Read more of this story at Slashdot.
