With the Successful Funding of the iBox Nano, 3D Printers Just Got a Lot Smaller and Cheaper

Surely some of you remember the toy called Shrinky Dinks, the polystyrene toy that allows users to turn pieces of plastic into smaller pieces of plastic. (According to Wikipedia, 90’s alt-rockers Sugar Ray were originally known as ‘Shrinky Dinx’ until Milton Bradley threatened a lawsuit—more nostalgia than you asked for on a Tuesday morning, I know.) If it’s a somewhat dated reference, I must say that I envy the children of the future, who may well grow up with the parentally supervised fun of the 3D printing thanks to iBox Printers . The Melbourne, FL-based company’s flagship Nano model is available for pre-order for under $300 on Kickstarter . We’ve previously seen a similarly diminutive CNC machine , but the iBox is rather more impressive, considering that 3D printing adds a veritable dimension of complexity. Moreover, the portable device is quiet, lightweight and can run on batteries, all thanks to the use of ultra-efficient LCD lamps to UV-cure the resin. Made from a series of stacked acrylic plates, the housing looks something like a tissue box, with an overhead-projector-style print head; on the UI end, the Nano is controlled primarily via mobile/web app over WiFi. AT&T and Verizon want your LTE calls to cross networks

As nice as it is that the big US carriers are starting to roll out high-quality calls over LTE , there’s a big catch: those calls don’t cross networks, so you’re frequently stuck with regular voice service. Happily, that’s going to change soon. AT&T and Verizon have revealed plans to make voice over LTE work between their systems in 2015. If all goes well, you’ll get pristine-sounding conversations when you reach a Verizon customer from your AT&T phone (and vice versa). As for playing nicely with other networks? Well, that depends. Sprint is still being cautious with its VoLTE launch. T-Mobile, meanwhile, has already been testing interoperability — as CEO John Legere is eager to point out , AT&T and Verizon may be late to the party. Whoever can claim bragging rights, the upgrades are good news if you’ve ever had trouble making out muddy calls. Acer has announced a new version of its V Nitro Black Edition portable with a 15.6-inch, 3, 840 x 2, 140 screen at its heart, giving you extra-sharp imagery when you’re gaming or editing photos. It promises to be a better deal than its arch-nemesis. Carnival’s cruise ships are getting much faster WiFi

If you’ve tried to use internet access aboard a cruise ship, you know it can be an exercise in frustration — the connection is rarely speedy or reliable enough to make you feel at home. You might not have that problem on your next pleasure trip, however. Carnival is now rolling out WiFi@Sea , a “smart hybrid” network that automatically switches between satellite data and land-based antennas depending on whichever is quickest. In theory, this leads to service that’s not just 10 times faster, but more reliable; you should have an easier time uploading vacation photos, even if you’re between ports. You’ll need to time your next voyage carefully if you want to try this speedier service for yourself. WiFi@Sea be available before the end of the year, but only in North America for Carnival ships headed to the Caribbean; it’ll reach Alaskan cruises next summer, and you’ll see it in other corners of the globe between 2015 and 2016. That’s potentially a long wait, but it beats having to grapple with sub-par wireless while you’re traveling the seas. Yes, the 5K Retina iMac’s screen runs at 60Hz at 5K resolution

The Retina iMac on my desk, driving my pair of 27-inch Thunderbolt monitors. Lee Hutchinson I’m at the end of my time with the Retina iMac now that our Senior Applemeister Andrew Cunningham is back from his nuptials. He’ll be finishing up our coverage of the device, but I wanted to touch on a couple of final points with the big Mac before I send it on its way to the East Coast. We’ve received several variations of the same question submitted to our feedback form: does the Retina iMac operate at 60Hz in its native 5120×2880 resolution? And if so, how is that even possible, given that DisplayPort 1.2 doesn’t have the bandwidth to support that resolution and refresh rate? To answer the first question: yes, the iMac’s display runs at 60Hz, even when driving all 14.7 million pixels of its native 5k resolution. Apple directly verified this when I asked; the company also told Daring Fireball’s John Gruber the same. Further, it can be confirmed with apps that measure your refresh rate, like SwitchResX : The output from SwitchResX on the Retina iMac, showing the 60Hz refresh rate. For additional verification, a quick visit to a Web-based app that demonstrates 60Hz movement shows that the screen is operating at that refresh rate: Read 8 remaining paragraphs | Comments

North Korea’s Brand New Ballistic Sub Discontinued by Soviets in 1990

Looks like North Korea’s engineers have been hard at work brushing up on their obsolete Soviet-era technology. Because after acquiring 10 discontinued Soviet subs, everyone’s favorite little warmongering-dictatorship-that-could has finally rendered the outdated ballistic vessels seaworthy—and it only took them 21 years.
