The Curiosity Rover is driving in reverse to protect its dented wheels

Curiosity’s aluminum wheels have taken a beating since starting its Martian mission back in August 2012. Now, in an effort to preserve them, NASA instructed the rover to drive nearly 330 feet (100 meters) in reverse — it’s longest advance in three months. Read more…

Looter caught trying to sell a hoard of Roman gold and silver

An amateur archaeologist — or more accurately, an opportunistic ass-wipe with a metal detector — recently uncovered a treasure trove of gold and silver artifacts in Germany. But he was promptly caught after trying to sell the rare items on the black market. Read more…

A Simple Trick for Getting 3D-Looking Results from Moving 2D Images

Watching movies in 3D is fun, if you can stand the splitting headache those headsets give you. For now they’re the moviemakers’ way of tricking your eyes into feeding your brain a false sense of depth perception, but a bunch of GIF-happy blogosphere denizens have discovered a more low-tech way to do that: By adding two vertical white stripes to your moving image. Presumably they needn’t be two perfectly vertical stripes, nor is it important that they be precisely white so much as in sharp contrast to the predominant tone of the image. But by adding a visually static element that interrupts, and becomes interrupted by, a moving object, our brains are fooled into perceiving depth. (more…)

Ice-Climbing Structures Are Mind-Blowing Experimental Architecture

The design and fabrication of artificial ice-climbing structures is an incredibly creative yet widely overlooked form of experimental architecture. The resulting constructions are often astonishing: ice-covered loops, ledges, branches, and towers reminiscent of the playful 1960s experiments of Archigram , yet serving as some of the most spatially interesting athletic venues in all of today’s professional sports. Scientists just created some of the most powerful muscles in existence

In a surprising breakthrough for the world of materials science, researchers have created some of the world’s most powerful artificial muscles we’ve ever seen. And they did it with simple fishing line. These freakishly strong and cheap muscles could revolutionize robotics, and perhaps one day our own bodies. Read more…

5TB hard drives are here, shipping now in LaCie’s five-bay NAS

25 terabytes of storage in a single standalone cube? That’s now possible, thanks to Seagate’s new 5TB hard drive. You can pair the LaCie 5big Network 2 five-bay NAS with up to five individual 5-terabyte drives for a maximum of 25TB of storage for less than two grand. Based on the $300 price difference between the 15TB kit ($1, 299) and the 10TB version ($999), we imagine you’ll be able to max out the RAID device about $1, 900, once these gigantic drives become available for purchase individually. For now, you’ll need to settle for one of the two above configurations, available directly from LaCie beginning today. Filed under: Storage Comments Source: LaCie

Microsoft rebrands Office Web Apps as Office Online because it’s an online version of Office

Use Office Web Apps much? Us neither, which is probably why Microsoft’s answer to Google Docs felt it needed a makeover. Following SkyDrive’s recent rebrand to OneDrive , Office Web Apps has received similar treatment, and now asks you to call it Office Online. Microsoft hopes this new title more accurately reflects what Web Apps was/is: an online version of Word, Powerpoint, Excel and others, free to SkyDrive OneDrive users. Furthermore, Office Online is now located at the convenient URL of Office.com , which should prompt a few more people to stumble across it and add it to their bookmarks. Otherwise, it’s the same Office-in-a-browser experience with real-time co-editing features, just with a heap of new document templates and a dropdown toolbar for selecting different apps on the fly. Now, go get your spreadsheet on — we need those TPS reports by lunch. Filed under: Internet , Software , Microsoft Comments Source: Microsoft (Office Blog) , Office.com
