Microsoft Warns Customers Away From RC4 and SHA-1

Trailrunner7 writes “The RC4 and SHA-1 algorithms have taken a lot of hits in recent years, with new attacks popping up on a regular basis. Many security experts and cryptographers have been recommending that vendors begin phasing the two out, and Microsoft on Tuesday said it is now recommending to developers that they deprecate RC4 and stop using the SHA-1 hash algorithm. RC4 is among the older stream cipher suites in use today, and there have been a number of practical attacks against it, including plaintext-recovery attacks. The improvements in computing power have made many of these attacks more feasible for attackers, and so Microsoft is telling developers to drop RC4 from their applications. The company also said that as of January 2016 it will no longer will validate any code signing or root certificate that uses SHA-1.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Former Demonoid Members Receive Email Claiming Resurrection, Get Malware Instead

New submitter giveen1 writes “I recieved this email as a former Demonoid.me user. I tried to go to the website and link is dead. … ‘Dear Demonoid Community Member, We have all read the same news stories: The Demonoid servers shut down and seized in the Ukraine. The Demonoid admin team detained in Mexico. The demonoid.me domain snatched and put up for sale. The Demonoid trackers back online in Hong Kong, but then disappearing. … Now for some good news: The heart and soul of Demonoid lives on! Through an amazing sequence of unlikely events, the data on those Ukrainian servers has made its way into the safe hands of members of our community and has now been re-launched as d2.vu.'” But it turns out that the site was distributing malware, hosted on an American VPS, and quickly shut down after the provider discovered this. Oxford Temporarily Blocks Google Docs To Fight Phishing

netbuzz writes “Fed up with phishers using Google Forms to commandeer campus email accounts as spam engines, Oxford University recently blocked access to Google Docs for two-and-a-half hours in what it called an ‘extreme action’ designed to get the attention of both its users and Google. ‘Seeing multiple such incidents the other afternoon tipped things over the edge,’ Oxford explains in a blog post. ‘We considered these to be exceptional circumstances and felt that the impact on legitimate University business by temporarily suspending access to Google Docs was outweighed by the risks to University business by not taking such action.’ The move generated widespread complaints from those affected, as well as criticism from outside network professionals.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

This Is Why Vine Is Stupid

I don’t get Vine. I don’t give a looping turd about it. Every video I’ve seen so far is six seconds of jerky concentrated idiocy. I may be too old for this crap but I’m not alone—thanks, [ Willa via Laughing Squid via Petapixel ] More »

Microsoft Urges Businesses To Get Off XP

An anonymous reader writes “It’s approximately 11 years since Windows XP was unveiled, and this week Microsoft was still at it trying to convince users that it’s time to upgrade. A post on the Windows For Your Business Blog calls on businesses to start XP migrations now. Microsoft cites the main reason as being that support for XP ends in April 2014, and ‘most new hardware options will likely not support the Windows XP operating system.’ If you run Windows Vista, Microsoft argues that it’s time to ‘start planning’ the move to Windows 8. As this article points out, it’s not uncommon to hear about people still running XP at work.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.
