Despite Piracy Claims, North American Box Office Hits Record $11.4 Billion In 2016

Slashdot reader rudy_wayne writes: Despite constant claims of losing billions of dollars to “piracy”, the North American box office closed out 2016 with $11.4 billion in ticket sales. That marks a new record for the industry, bypassing the previous record of $11.1 billion that was established in 2015. Disney had four of the top five highest-grossing films, including “Finding Dory, ” the year’s top film with $486.3 million. “When holdovers are taken into account, Disney had six of the year’s ten highest-grossing releases, a group that includes Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which debuted in 2015, ” reports Variety. Other top films include Rogue One: A Star Wars Story ($408.2 million), Captain America: Civil War ($408.1 million), The Secret Life of Pets ($368.4 million), and The Jungle Book ($364 million). Disney “controlled more than a quarter of the domestic market share despite releasing fewer films than any of the major studios, ” according to the article, which notes that the record was achieved despite the absence of big releases in several major movie franchises partly through higher ticket prices (and possibly also inflation). Disney IT Workers, In Lawsuit, Claim Discrimination Against Americans

dcblogs quotes a report from Computerworld: After Disney IT workers were told in October 2014 of the plan to use offshore outsourcing firms, employees said the workplace changed. The number of South Asian workers in Disney technology buildings increased, and some workers had to train H-1B-visa-holding replacements. Approximately 250 IT workers were laid off in January 2015. Now 30 of these employees filed a lawsuit on Monday in U.S. District Court in Orlando, alleging discrimination on the basis of national origin and race. The Disney IT employees, said Sara Blackwell, a Florida labor attorney who is representing this group, “lost their jobs when their jobs were outsourced to contracting companies. And those companies brought in mostly, or virtually all, non-American national origin workers, ” she said. The lawsuit alleges that Disney terminated the employment of the plaintiffs “based solely on their national origin and race, replacing them with Indian nationals.” The people who were laid off were multiple races, but the people who came in were mostly one race, said Blackwell. The lawsuit alleges that Disney terminated the employment of the plaintiffs “based solely on their national origin and race, replacing them with Indian nationals.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Apple’s Best Laptop Is Four Years Old

In 2012 the Macbook Pro Retina wasn’t so much the next stage of laptops as it was a fun oddity by Apple. It was a workstation, designed to handle grueling video and photo editing tasks with aplomb, but it was missing some workstation musts, like a DVD drive or Ethernet port. Instead it was thinner and lighter than a traditional Macbook Pro, had a gorgeous 1800p display, and was outfitted with a solid state drive. Read more…

‘Wreck-It Ralph 2’ is officially set to wreck the internet in 2018

Everyone’s favorite game-related Disney movie (no, not Tron ) Wreck-It Ralph is set for a sequel that’s hitting the scene on March 9, 2018. This news probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone given the original’s massive success back in 2012, but it’s definitely a reason to get excited. Disney broke the news during a special livestream on Facebook today, announcing that it’s working on Wreck-It Ralph 2 , which will go beyond the confines of the arcade seen in the first movie and into the internet. There weren’t many additional details divulged to go on, but this could mean some interesting changes for both the film’s format and the type of game references we might see. It’s a bit of a wait for the sequel to hit theaters, but it’s just one in a long line of video game-focused films coming down the pipeline. For instance, the Minecraft film is arriving n 2019, and the Tetris film (now a trilogy) is planned to begin shooting next year. The future is rife with video game movies, but will they be any good?
