Microsoft Will Soon Start Bundling Drivers With Windows Store Games

Microsoft will start bundling drivers with Windows Store games to improve the performance of the game once downloaded. A report on Thurrott adds: This will work by the game download trigging Windows Update to acquire the minimum driver requirements to make sure that application works as intended. This may perturb some users who like having complete control over the driver updates for their hardware as this auto-download mechanism will overwrite the existing installation of the driver. Of course, you can still roll-back the update but hopefully Microsoft gives us a way to stop the auto-download of the driver via the Windows Store when this feature arrives. Cisco Systems To Lay Off About 14,000 Employees, Representing 20% of Global Workforce

schwit1 writes from a report via CRN: Cisco Systems is laying off about 14, 000 employees, representing nearly 20 percent of the network equipment maker’s global workforce. San Jose, California-based Cisco is expected to announce the cuts within the next few weeks, the report said, as the company transitions from its hardware roots into a software-centric organization. Cisco increasingly requires “different skill sets” for the “software-defined future” than it did in the past, as it pushes to capture a higher share of the addressable market and aims to boost its margins, the CRN report said citing a source familiar with the situation. “The company’s headcount as of April 20, 2016, was 73, 104, ” reports CRN. “Cutting 14, 000 employees would be the single largest layoff in Cisco’s 32-year history.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

‘GoldenEye: Source’ Updated: A Classic, Free Multiplayer Game

An anonymous reader quotes The Verge: GoldenEye: Source received its first update in more than three years this week. It’s free to download and it features 25 recreated maps, 10 different multiplayer modes, and redesigned versions of the original game’s 28 weapons. It was created using Valve’s Source engine, the same set of tools used to create Counter Strike and Half-Life games. So it’s a massive step up in both visuals and performance for one of the more drastically dated gaming masterpieces of the last 20 years… GoldenEye 007, the beloved N64 first-person shooter, has been recreated in high-definition glory by a team of dedicated fans over the course of 10 years…the attention to detail and the amount of effort that went into GoldenEye: Source make it one of the most polished HD remakes of a N64 classic. With 8 million copies sold, Wikipedia calls it the third best-selling Nintendo 64 game of all-time (although this version doesn’t recreate its single-player campaigns). Anyone have fond memories of playing Goldeneye 007? Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Nintendo NX Is a Portable Console With Detachable Controllers, Says Report

An anonymous reader writes from a report via Eurogamer.net: We now have a good idea as to what the Nintendo NX will consist of thanks to a new report from Eurogamer. According to a number of sources, Nintendo’s upcoming NX will be a portable, handheld console with detachable controllers. Eurogamer.net reports: “On the move, NX will function as a high-powered handheld console with its own display. So far so normal — but here’s the twist: we’ve heard the screen is bookended by two controller sections on either side, which can be attached or detached as required. Then, when you get home, the system can connect to your TV for gaming on the big screen. A base unit, or dock station, is used to connect the brain of the NX — within the controller — to display on your TV. NX will use game cartridges as its choice of physical media, multiple sources have also told [Eurogamer]. Another source said the system would run on a new operating system from Nintendo. It won’t, contrary to some earlier rumors, simply run on Android. The system will harness Nvidia’s powerful mobile processor Tegra. Graphical comparisons with current consoles are difficult due to the vastly different nature of the device — but once again we’ve heard Nintendo is not chasing graphical parity. Quite the opposite, it is sacrificing power to ensure it can squeeze all of this technology into a handheld, something which also tallies with earlier reports. Finally, we’ve heard from one source that NX planning has recently moved up a gear within Nintendo ahead of the console’s unveiling, which is currently slated for September. After the confused PR fiasco of the Wii U launch, the company is already settling on a simple marketing message for NX — of being able to take your games with you on the go.” Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Facebook’s Messenger Bot Store Could Be Most Important Launch Since App Store

An anonymous reader writes from an opinionated article on TechCrunch by Tom Hadfield: If Facebook announces the “Messenger Bot Store” at F8, as many predict, it would be arguably the most consequential event for the tech industry since Apple announced the App Store and iPhone SDK in March 2008. Today, Facebook Messenger has 800 million monthly active users — more than 100 times the number of iPhone owners when Apple launched the App Store. In January, TechCrunch first reported rumors of Facebook’s secret Chat SDK for building Messenger bots. If and when Facebook announces a Bot Store, it will mark the “end of the beginning” of a new era: messaging as a platform. Over the summer, The Information broke the news that AI-powered Facebook M would enable Messenger users to make purchases, restaurant reservations, and travel bookings within the messaging interface. A Messenger Bot Store would have far-reaching consequences not only for entrepreneurs and investors, but also developers and designers. Sam Lessin, the CEO of Fin, says the rise of chat-based user interfaces will mark “a fundamental shift that is going to change the types of applications that get developed and the style of service development.” For a time, bots were perceived to be plain-text exchanges and as such were often described as “invisible apps.” As Jonathan Libov at USV points out, “just because the container is a messenger doesn’t mean that all the apps inside are text-based.” Tomaz Stolfa says there is “unexplored potential in blending conversational interfaces with rich graphical UI elements.” If 800 million Facebook users start discovering bots in Messenger after F8, it will vindicate those who have been saying bots are the new apps. ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ is an Ultra HD Blu-ray launch title

Ultra HD Blu-ray is finally coming in 2016, and while we’ll hear more about its 4K movies this week at CES, Warner Bros. is kicking things off by announcing some of the first movies on the way . Right out of the gate, it’s offering Mad Max: Fury Road , San Andreas, The Lego Movie and Pan . They’re promised for the “initial launch” early this year, although there’s no exact date mentioned. More movies will arrive later this year and Warner says it plans to release over 35 in 2016, although only Man of Steel and Pacific Rim have been named. Standard features are of course 4K resolution and HDR support for more colors and better contrast, while select titles will also feature “immersive audio” Dolby Atmos sound. If you’re skipping discs for streaming or downloading, Warner says it will expand the number of movies available that way as well. Fox announced its Ultra HD Blu-ray plans during IFA last year , stay tuned this week for more news on what 4K content is coming to match all the new TVs. Now we can 3D print ceramics

Despite being able to build just about anything with 3D printing, until now items have been limited to polymer plastics, a handful of metals and glass . However, researchers at HRL Laboratories have announced a significant advancement in additive manufacturing: the ability to print ceramics . The trick, the HRL team figured out, was to not heat ceramic powder. Doing so generates too many microscopic flaws that can lead to cracks and fractures. Instead, the team developed a material they’re calling “preceramic polymers” that convert to ceramic when heated. Essentially, the HRL team prints out the 3D design using these preceramic polymers and then fires the resulting item (like in a kiln) to harden the material into ceramic. This material is compatible with stereolithography , a popular 3D printing method wherein a laser is used to solidify a liquid polymer. What’s more, the team figures it can print out a highly detailed and complex ceramic part 100 to 1000 times faster than conventional stereolithography by using an ultraviolet light and patterned masks. This advancement could prove a boon to the aerospace industry which already relies on ceramic components for everything from wing panels on planes to the internal mechanisms of orbital rockets. DARPA has awarded the team a development contract for an ablative ceramic aeroshell — essentially a heat shield for spacecraft as they enter an atmosphere — as HRL’s ceramics are reportedly 10 times stronger than the ceramic foam currently commercially available.
