Server shutdown disables single-player saves in NBA2K14

Anyone that plays online games has to accept the fact that the servers for those games will probably eventually be shut down by the centralized publisher that operates them (games with player-controlled server support notwithstanding). What most players probably don’t expect is for their single-player game saves to become permanently unusable because an online server somewhere goes down. That’s what has been happening to players of NBA2K14 this past week, though. As Polygon reports , since a planned online server shutdown for the game on March 31, previously created save files in the MyCareer and MyGM modes can no longer pass a built-in server check on the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. That means those files are simply unusable, and all that single player progress has effectively been lost. “This means that if you had created a MyCareer or a MyGM online save file that was once connected to our servers it too sadly has retired and is no longer available for use and it would be necessary to re-create these files as offline saves,” 2K Support writes in a message to affected users, obtained by Polygon. “Sadly this may come as an inconvenience to some of you and if so we truly do understand and can feel for how upsetting this may seem as there always is a special bond that occurs between a player and their MyCareer save but all good things must come to an end and rest assured your MyCareer or MyGM went out while on top!” Read 7 remaining paragraphs | Comments

Amazon Instant Video Finally Comes To Android Tablets

Amazon Instant Video is a surprisingly solid Netflix-competitor — particularly if you’re already an Amazon Prime member, which makes much of the content free. Until today, though, the service had one glaring fault: if you wanted to watch it on an Android tablet that wasn’t Amazon’s Fire HD, you were pretty much out of luck. That fault is finally fixed. Futuristic ‘SuperTruck’ doubles the MPG of other semis

The EPA estimates that motor vehicles contribute about half of America’s smog-forming volatile organic compounds and nitrogen oxide emissions every year. And given that the average fuel efficiency of your average 18-wheeler only hits about 6 miles per gallon, these big rigs can be big polluters too. But this new prototype from Daimler Trucks North America, built as part of the US Department of Transportation’s SuperTruck Challenge, sips just half as much gas. When the DOT started the SuperTruck Challenge in 2009, organizers hoped to see a 50 percent efficiency increase over that year’s “average” semi. Daimler’s “Freightliner SuperTruck” more than doubled that goal, boasting a 115 percent increase over the baseline standard. Most of that improvement comes from simple aerodynamic tweaks like adding an adjustable ride height, rear wheel fairings and articulated side extenders to cover gaps between the cab and trailer. The SuperTruck is also 700 pounds lighter than the baseline, thanks to a reengineered tractor frame. What’s more, its hybrid diesel/electric 10.7-liter power plant supplements the diesel fuel source with recaptured waste heat from the exhaust and brake. Roof-mounted solar panels draw in enough energy to independently run the trailer’s air conditioning system on sunny days. The SuperTruck even leverages GPS tracking to automatically shift gears and modulate the vehicle’s speed to maximize efficiency given upcoming terrain changes. All this translates into one seriously efficient vehicle — at least as far 18-wheelers go. A recent test run through Texas saw the Freightliner hit 12.2 miles per gallon at 65 miles per hour. That’s not bad for a truck pulling more than 65, 000 pounds. Filed under: Misc Comments Via: Gizmag Source: Freightliner

Why You Should Care About VP9, Google’s Clever Video Codec

As the ongoing Meerkatification of humanity proves, the internet (in one form or another) is becoming more and more about video. At peak times, Netflix and YouTube alone account for half of all web traffic. That’s an understandably huge burden for ISPs to carry. But as well as making the pipes bigger, we can also shrink down what goes through them. Read more…
